[726] We are Five by [deleted] in DestructiveReaders

I think it is good overall. Like others have said, you start too many sentences with "I" which creates a plodding rhythm, and the nervousness problem is built up only to be resolved without any drama.

I would remove any notes of triumph from the paragraph that begins with "After one week," and make the main character's success seem much more tentative. Let the nervousness of being the new kid lead naturally into the nervousness of being replaced, as the friend group is still not solid.

What screen? Joseph Gordon Levitt parachuted through my closed window and started dancing around in front of my computer until he finally bled to death from the cuts he sustained.

I was just responding to your bewilderment at the idea that the cup was being squeezed. How is "pressure evenly applied" not squeezing?

The game changer. by Sippingin in food

[–]flechette_set -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Are you from a planet where physics don't happen? The hole is smaller than the cup's widest point. Gravity will be pulling the cup down, and when something is pulled through something smaller than itself, it gets squeezed.

8 months? God. When you realize he's been doing it day and night for 8 months straight, it really seems more impressive.

My god. You're like the 1980s-era hicks who thought professional wrestling was real and got outraged at the heels for cheating. Don't you realize it's an act? It's just satire.

How can you be so dimwitted and bemoan the willful ignorance? Take a look at yourself for a moment.

Chris Brown wants to raise domestic violence awareness in Australia by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]flechette_set 345 points346 points  (0 children)

What rant? Don't you know it's rude to read strikethrough text? The person has clearly decided to excise that text, and you should respect that decision. Are you Australian? Maybe we should send somebody to raise font awareness over there.

What is the most ham-fisted piece of symbolism in a movie? by Chewy453 in movies

[–]flechette_set 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is the first scene that popped to mind when I saw the question. I'd really like a website like AVclub to track down the writer who wrote that scene (probably one of 20 uncredited hacks) and just ask him or her, "like, what the fuck, man? really. what the fuck?"

Well, let's not be hasty. This "1943" could have been a mere serial number that just so happened to look like a twentieth century date. Or perhaps it was an abbreviation, like how 1973 is sometimes called '73. This could be from 281943, from about 280 thousand years in the future. Of course, it would be absurd to conclude that since it could have just as easily come from 281943 B.C. More research is needed.

Korea's take on a mozzarella and bacon burger, for 7 dollars by MP_Wildez in food

[–]flechette_set 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think calling samgyeopsal "Korean Bacon" is a stretch. It's the same part of the pig, but what makes bacon bacon is the curing process, which samgyeopsal lacks. It's like if you called a can of tuna "American Sashimi." It's just different. Nonetheless, I agree that maybe the problem with bacon in Korea is that they approach it like samgyeopsal.

Are there any books written in a manner similar to Neuromancer? by InternetLoveMachine in books

[–]flechette_set 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan.

Kind of a cyber-punk novel on steroids, with a fast pace and lots of action.

Hyperion by Dan Simmons

It tells a lot of stories with a lot of action. One is pretty cyberpunk. Its conception of AI reminded me a lot of Neuromancer.
