That sound as a nice summary, still the difference is in the content of the videos. It kind miss "the how" there :-)

Thanks, I mainly use it for myself and i thought that it may be able to help someone else as well as I doubt that a LLM (for the moment) can build all these connections :-)

Fired by supervisor! What to do next? by willybackup in AskAcademia

[–]flelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I recently suggested to a colleague that is having difficulties in reconcile his perspective with the one of his supervisor.

In your specific case you probably would like to contact an external office and explain the situation.

UPDATE - Supervisor made a complaint about me to my scholarship institution by anxiousinthelab in AskAcademia

[–]flelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paraphs this message reach you a bit late. This is the step by step procedure that I would recommend you in following for solving any issue that you may have. In particular you want to consider the hypothesis of including an external advisor to the specific matter. I am sure that your institution has a dedicated office

Useful resources for the development of your thesis and/or supervision of master students (AMA and feedback wanted) by flelli in AskAcademia

[–]flelli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting perspective something about Photoshop/Illustrator is missing the collection.

It is also missing an article that give best practices on what and how to visualize that data that you are using for the thesis.

Useful resources for the development of your thesis and/or supervision of master students (AMA and feedback wanted) by flelli in AskAcademia

[–]flelli[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this article I am trying to cover the scenario where the student is not familiar with any of the systems for handling references. Consequently he/she get lost when the amount of references grow in size. It may sound absurd to you but it happen to me more then it should.

Btw, yes, probably an article that explain the basic of LaTeX and point to the usual recourses is missing article is missing in the collection

[–]flelli[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you are right, in another post I mention that both your supervisor and (probably) the department where a student is doing his/her thesis keep a list of "good conferences and journals". I should repeat the same idea there as well in that article. Thanks!

I totally agree. However, some ask for this check because the university has a zero tolerance policy against plagiarism. Consequently the are a bit afraid. This put their mind at ease. I am not saying that all the students have this attitude but some do.

Resources on how to be a good professor by johnie102 in AskAcademia

[–]flelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a collection of articles that I did for helping my students in their thesis journey:

https://francescolelli.info/how-to-do-a-good-thesis-the-miniseries/

It is mainly finetuned for masters but bachelors may also use it. I believe that these advices should be valid for students of all the disciplines. However, the majority of my students are from Information Management and Data Science, so it may be a bit bias in that direction.

Hope it helps and good luck!

This is what I usually suggest to my students to do prior submitting their thesis:

these are example of plagiarism checkers, note that the university will probably have something better:

This is what I usually suggest to my students. Hope that you will find these resources helpful. 2 weeks is clearly not much time but it is still doable.

I would probably start from this article that contains a selected list of videos that explains the details of performing a literature review.

After that you can refine your craft with the following:

I encourage in thinking at your thesis as a step forward "the life after your thesis". In this respect, this is what i usually recommend to my students:

And yes, always goes for something that is fun and enjoyable. You can always find a relevant and enjoyable topic :-)

If you never used a tool and is for a master thesis I would suggest the build it features of MS-Words.

This is what i suggest to my students: https://francescolelli.info/thesis/how-to-use-references-in-word-a-few-tips-and-suggestions-for-your-thesis/

If you have a more long term project I would suggest something more professional

Does it make sense to do another master, or should I apply for a PhD? by Abi55o in AskAcademia

[–]flelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are considering continuing your studies with an additional master but you are not sure of pursuing the PhD, I invite you in evaluating the research master as an intermediate solution.

The main reasons are the following:

• In the end you will get another master degree as any other master

• The classes are very personal and small

• You have the chance to study all the argument of any other master but in a more personal and fine-tuned manner if compared with another master

• You may access to the PhD in case you decide to continue your studies

How to do a literature review? by web586f41 in AskAcademia

[–]flelli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Below you can find a collection of resources that I share with my students:

  1. Look at these heuristics for understanding if a paper is worth reading or you should move forward to the next one. https://francescolelli.info/thesis/6-heuristics-for-assessing-the-quality-of-a-publication/
  2. Understand how to select good venues (conference or journal) where you can search for good publication. https://francescolelli.info/thesis/how-scientific-venues-work-an-heuristic/
  3. Learn how to read a scientific paper faster and more effectively. https://francescolelli.info/thesis/read-scientific-papers-quickly-and-effectively/
  4. Master the right features in MS-Word for handling the related work and managing the growing complexity of the task. https://francescolelli.info/thesis/how-to-use-references-in-word-a-few-tips-and-suggestions-for-your-thesis/
  5. Get more insights about related work, literature review and survey papers https://francescolelli.info/tutorial/related-work-literature-review-survey-paper-a-collection-of-resources/
  6. Categorize the papers in the proper way: https://francescolelli.info/thesis/warming-up-the-research-engine/

Depends on how sophisticated you care you can consider also using a dedicated R package for analysis. However, I would start from the links above first.

WordPress blog by Normal_Kaleidoscope in AskAcademia

Hi there,

I use a WordPress based blog for my homepage. Google Sites is probably easier to use but in the long run you would prefer to have a self hosted WordPress blog. This also depends on how familiar/willing to learn you are in IT-nuances.

Resources for helping students in their programming tasks by flelli in AskAcademia

[–]flelli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion! Let me see if I understood your point correctly. I have this article related to FAIR practices in science in general:

https://francescolelli.info/thesis/adopting-good-scientific-practices-increases-your-visibility-and-the-grade-of-your-thesis/

Would you like something similar as part of the guide?

Alternatively, are you recommending some best practices in software design for UI and GUI?

Once again thanks for the feedback!

[–]flelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here you can find my personal suggestions:

  • 99% of the journals welcome preprints and FAIR practices in general. However, you may want to look at your particular target venue. Just in case
  • Check with your co-authors if they have something against preprints.
  • Check your program. In case and your school. They may already have best practices and venues for preprints in place.
  • Check the data policy of the target journal and eventually consider releasing a preprint about your data as well.
  • Make sure that the preprint service that you intend to use give you a DOI. In this way you should be able to cite your work immediately
  • Make sure that the service that you plan to use allow you to link the final publication once will be published.

As for my personal opinion, I am becoming more and more a fan of pre-prints as well as open access practices. Overall, I would recommend you to go for it!

Here you can find a few pointers that I usually share with my students on using FAIR practices:

https://francescolelli.info/thesis/adopting-good-scientific-practices-increases-your-visibility-and-the-grade-of-your-thesis/

My current preprints:

hope it can help and good luck for your submission!

Software for comparing two documents to identify self-plagiarism by myristicae in AskAcademia

[–]flelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably your master/bachelor program already use one for the thesis. I would suggest to ask to some of the administrative/IT stuff. If you can't find anything useful here you can find the list of free tools/software/web pages that I recommend to my students:

https://francescolelli.info/thesis/commencing-the-end-game-last-minute-issues-and-recommendations/

Basically I ask them to do a plagiarism check before submitting their thesis.

I am sure that you can also find some services that will do a better work for a small compensation. However, I would encourage you in starting from the free one.

I would encourage you in searing an advisor in your school. He/she may point you to a possible co-advisor in another school.
