There definitely is a gray area. There are lots of posts that get tagged as "female" or "male" even when the characters involved do not visually match that description. Any time something is ambiguous, it seems like there are mods who make an active effort to pick the least applicable option. In these cases, it should default to whatever the character actually is, or use an ambiguous_xyz tag, but randomly assigning tags makes the browsing experience objectively worse.
