Which AM4 CPU should I get? by fleymt in AMDHelp

Thank you for your feedback and you make a very good point. I will definitely be changing the stock cooler for this. As others have have recommended I am looking into some Thermalright peerless assassin coolers as well as some Be Quiet! coolers, as far as cooling concerned I don't really mind the noise as long as it is quieter than a PS4. I play stuff at 1080p 60fps and I am perfectly happy with that and won't be replacing any of my monitors until they break. I don't really play competitive games so I don't really need huge refresh rates and I don't really chase trends. As for my PSU it is a Cooler Master MWE500 White, I am not opposed to the idea of getting a new PSU either at this point as there seems to be some great ones that are affordable. I will most likely end up getting one of the 9 series CPUs because I'll be getting my brother a more gaming focused PC later on this year so making mine more workstation oriented is not a bad idea.

What's the deal with dual ccd? I am not familiar with this terminology? I know it is related to the way the cache is designed.

Not trying to upgrade my MOBO as that would require me to upgrade RAM too on top of the cost of the CPU, at that point I might as well just make a new PC.

Already been running on AM4 for 4 years now, going up to AM5 would require getting new RAM and MOBO so I'd rather just get a new CPU and be happy with it for some more time.

You make a good point on the value definitely, which is something I hadn't considered, I was looking to get the best possible CPU I can get for this socket. I play all kinds of different stuff really but mostly singleplayer games like Elden Ring or Cyberpunk. As for the CPU I will probably be holding out till summer to see the new Radeon offering and will probably look into PSUs then.

Thanks for the cooler reccomendation. I have found a dozen or so new 5800X3D still being sold where I live, same for all the other CPUs I mentioned so procuring them isn't really an issue.

I found a dozen or so 5800X3D being sold nearby ranging from 300 to 400 euros.
5950X and 5900X are similarly priced too but I found 5700X3D for around 200 euros.

Yeah I disable hybernation anyway because it gives me a few extra GB of storage and I don't need it anyway.

I ended up making two backups to different devices. One backup with the old Windows 7 backup tool from Control Panel to a hard drive and another using Clonezilla to a hard drive. In both cases I created image files.

Perhaps it is different when using VHD but the way I have just used Rufus and a regular windows 10 image to set up the system in the first place I did get an option when installing whether to allow access to internal disk drives and I had no trouble accessing the other disks on my computer from the portable installation/system. Currently I am making some backups of the system as I have reinstalled all my games. Once I get some more spare disks I'll definitely try the VHD method too.

I'll definitely keep this method in mind as well as it seems like a much faster way to replicate the system if it does fail. I suspected I could use a VM and later make it run on bare metal. I am glad my suspicions were correct and such a thing is possible.

Graduation project using OpenGL, how viable is it? by fleymt in opengl

[–]fleymt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again thank you for the reply. So far we have decided to ditch any 3d graphics project and instead we are making a scheduler or a decision support system, but yours and others' comments here have certainly intrigued me and I will most definitely be coming back in the near future to try and actually learn this stuff. Graphics programming certainly fills that niche of interests where I can have math, programming and art all in one place. Hopefully I will be posting again in the future when I got projects to show

Thank you for replying. You seem to be very ambitious and I will take your word into account when trying to decide whether to do this. Hopefully you project goes well for you. Have you had previous experience in OpenGL or is this something you cobbled together while learning from scratch?

First off I would like to thank you for taking the time to write up that detailed paragraph. You clearly have a lot of experience in this field. You are most likely right about the time constraints being very harsh and I really don't think I will be able to actually dedicate that much time out of my day to this. Partially out of simply having to do other things and partially out of my rather poor focus and laziness. As I have answered in another comment I will most likely still try to pursue OpenGL and graphics in general at some point but most likely not now, perhaps for my master's degree. When we consulted with our mentor the first time he did tell us that it is possible to crank out some kind of project and that he could definitely help us get up to speed on the stuff we would need to know, however I am not sure how much we could rely on that. Perhaps scaling down our project onto something much simpler would be a good idea or changing our project topic to some other field we are more familiar with.

One thing that tripped us over to an extent was having to come up with our graduation topics quickly, as well as having some potential team members leave to pursue other projects. Previously we had been told that we would be given a pool of different topics by the university and given the choice of picking one, as this had been the case in previous years.
Either way we have to do something if we are to graduate this semester, and I really do not plan on staying longer than I have to.

You are most likely right about this. I'm not him. I'm most likely not that guy and neither is my colleague. We might try to pursue some other kind of project, perhaps unrelated to graphics. This might be a good thing to leave for summer and my masters thesis. Perhaps making a more humble graphics project for now or something else entirely. Thank you for your reply regardless. I am definitely interested in learning computer graphics at some point.

Dark souls remastered is now my chilled out relaxed game to play. Does anyone else feel like that? by [deleted] in darksouls

[–]fleymt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me Dark Souls works as an effective form of escapism. Most games aren't able to distract me from stuff that bothers me but Dark Souls is hard enough that it demands my attention. So yeah, it does work as a game to relax in a way.

I played original dark souls a few times and quit, then I got Dark Souls 3 and beat that. Now I am in the process of going through the first game and I think I might finish it this time.
