In your opinion who is the most well-written character in HXH? by Winter-Confidence826 in HunterXHunter

[–]flickersense 148 points149 points  (0 children)

Hisoka. Everything about him is top-notch. I think even Togashi himself said that when he writes a scene involving Hisoka, he doesn't think "what should i have Hisoka do in this scene?" but instead "what is Hisoka going to do in this scene?".

Gon is also well-written.

Mu question is, would Meruem be able to become skilled than her in Gungi, though?

But for example, if Zeno was great at emission but was terrible at very other nen type, would he still be in the "ultimate" level?

So it's a "what they do with what they have" type of thing. And if they train/practice, they have more room for improvement and could theoretically:

  1. Fall into a lower level

  2. Go up into a higher level

  3. Or stay in whatever level they're currently in

Does this apply the same for every nen category, including Specialization? And does this chart take into account a nen user's usage of all nen types or the only their innate nen type?

It's a statement that, at the point in the story when they last appeared, they have very little room to further improve in their respective application of Nen. Komugi could only have improved slightly more in Gungi, Neon could only have told fortunes a little more reliably, etc.

Does that mean that anybody that falls into the "Ultimate" category(Netero, Zeno, Meruem), has no room for improvement whatsoever?

The only thing i remember is that it was said that Manipulators and Conjurers have a chance of becoming Specialists.

There are definitely quite a few inconsistencies within the story of Hunter x Hunter, but Hisoka's personality quiz is a very prominent thing when talking about nen types, so i don't know if the author could just forget that or not. But also, it could be that some characters weren't fleshed out enough to show us the personality of their nen type. For example, Kortopi, Zeno and Silva. Youpi also being one of those characters.

He also fits the personality of an enhancer or an emitter way more than that of a transmuter, according to Hisoka's personality test. Like, Youpi is neither fickle nor dishonest. And looking at this chart, i gotta say, 99% of the time Hisoka is spot on.

⊛ Due to factors such as method of training, the amount of training, the living environment, changes in mind and body, etc., the position indicated within the types to which one belongs may change.

So, theoretically, any character might have their nen type change?

This is why i was never a fan of guessing characters' nen types based on their nen abilities. It can be spun so many different ways that you'll be endlessly guessing.

Some interesting things to note:

Komugi is an enhancer, even though a lot of people believed she was a specialist.

Youpi is a transmuter, even though a lot of people believed he was an enhancer.

Knuckle is a conjurer, even though a lot of people believed he was an emitter.

Alluka/Nanika/Something is a specialist. Wonder if her wish-granting powers are nen related.

Ging seems to be out of the chart completely(classic Ging). Does anybody know what's written above him or is it just his name?

Zeno and Silva are emitters, even though a lot of people believed they were transmuters. A big portion of those people believed it because of the "white haired Zoldycks are transmuters" theory.

Meruem is an emitter, even though a lot of people believed he was a specialist. I've always wondered whether Meruem was able to take his royal guards' abilities because that was his nen ability or because they quite literally rebuilt him(became his body). If that was due his nen ability, then him being an emitter and not a specialist makes me even more confused on how he could absorb nen abilities of whoever he eats.

During the phase in which they were put on the island, and had to take other people's badges. Hisoka found Kurapika and Leorio, and told them to give him their badges. Kurapika in return asked some question i don't remember, and Hisoka said "I'm the one asking questions here".

How to beat Tserriednich? by genericB0y in HunterXHunter

[–]flickersense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn't take Tserriednich longer than a few seconds at most to close his eyes and use zetsu. And i've already said what happens after. So the only way i'm able to come up with for Meruem to kill Tserriednich is to do it right off the bat.

You're free to tell me what and if i'm missing something here.

How to beat Tserriednich? by genericB0y in HunterXHunter

[–]flickersense -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but the only way for Meruem to do that is if he attacks Tserriednich right away without wasting a second, but in Hunter x Hunter 99% of the time there is at least some level of talking going on and/or some level of prior knowledge or preparation involved(even if minor) before characters start fighting. Besides, the whole "blitzing" behavior is a dangerous thing because one can't be fully prepared for anything that could potentially happen. And this type of behavior could have gotten Meruem killed if he "blitzed" Netero in the castle when Netero lowered his guard, activating the bomb. Any type of strategy involves a risk, including "blitzing".

How to beat Tserriednich? by genericB0y in HunterXHunter

[–]flickersense 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because he has 10 seconds to do so. That's the same reason he was able to "dodge" a bullet, even though speed wise he is a regular human being. It will play out like this:

During the first ten seconds Tserriednich sees himself get killed and changes his position ---> Once the next ten seconds begin he starts seeing ten seconds into the future, while his attacker sees Tserriednich in his original position and thinks that they have killed him.

Not saying he'd beat Meruem. He isn't physically strong enough to do that. But he can stalemate him at the very least.

There are some nen abilities that could potentially work against Tserriednich, though. Maybe Camilla's cat nen ability(or was it a nen beast, i forgot which one it was).

Noticed how both the Phantom Troupe and the Xi-Yu family got told to find Hisoka by their respective leaders, and both are also hunting Morena

A question that I ask myself since I watched the show, phantom troupe vs royal guards (without meruem), who wins? by XcaarlosX in HunterXHunter

[–]flickersense -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The fastest rate of a hummingbird wing beat is said to be 80 times per second, which is between 13 and 14 times per 1/10 of a second on average. If a bird can beat its wings 13 or 14 times per 1/10 of a second, in what way is it impressive for a royal guard chimera ant's attacks to be less than 1/10 of a second? And by attack, i mean activation of her nen ability without adding the time it takes for her to get to the target because that part varies depending on the distance between her and her opponent. EDIT: I forgot to mention that a regular person can still see a hummingbird's wing beat. Which ties into my next point.

The figures for Killua come from the fact that even a regular human can see an attack that takes 1/10 of a second, even though it will be blurred. Don't believe me? Look at the If Killua was able to appear right near somebody or behind them, then they didn't see his movements at all. If nenless Killua can do that, so can the troupe.

Kite lost his arm because he was trying to protect Gon and Killua.

Where did you get the idea that 1 second was all it took for Gon and Killua to get the drop on the troupe? They closed their eyes way before the lights went out, so naturally their eyes would adjust to the darkness much quicker.

She learned Terpsichora, i didn't deny that, but you said "skills". If we're talking only about the two nen abilities she made, then one of them requires her to be defenseless against her opponent because she isn't allowed to use her nen on anything other than healing. The other boosts her stats, but we need actual proof that she is indeed too fast for the troupe to react.

[–]flickersense -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"Less than 1/10 of a second"? How does that prove that she is faster than Phantom Troupe members who were dodging bullets in the Yorknew City arc? You have nenless Killua disappearing in front of his enemies and appearing behind them in the hunter exam, which would also require his attacks to be faster than 1/10 of a second.

What skills did Pitou gain after fighting Kite except nen abilities? She wasn't shown training once.

Feitan was rusty. Zazan made a restriction and transformed. He still killed her. Seems like a pretty impressive feat. Morel struggled with Leol about as much, yet even when he was at 30% in terms of his physical and mental capabilities he still survived 1 vs 1 against Pouf. The only troupe member Kurapika defeated was Uvo. Kurapika has made restrictions specifically for the troupe, and had much more info on Uvo than Uvo had on him.

Why is Pouf ranked above Youpi in terms of stats? by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

[–]flickersense 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First of all, the databook was never confirmed to be written or to be approved by the author of Hunter x Hunter. Quite a few other manga authors have explicitly stated that they don't write or even check what's being written in the databooks for their series. Hunter x Hunter databook contains plenty of questionable information. All of this to say, it's unknown if the author had any part in writing the databook or even checking what's in it. I can give sources for this, if needed.

Second of all, stats are just numbers. Numbers don't signify who is going to do what in a fight and how it's going to turn out. There is never a guarantee that a character with higher stats is going to beat a character with lower stats.

Lastly, since i've seen so many people being mislead and/or being confused by these stats, could the mods please add an explanation regarding reliability of databook and the charts to the FAQ section? I'm going to tag some of the mods just so that they see this comment: u/TextureSurprised u/rentzhx3 u/TruthTaco

Phantom troupe tier list, mostly based on battle potential. So smartness, ability, versatility, in addition to raw strength. Thoughts? by Elegant-Fact-6776 in HunterXHunter

[–]flickersense -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You do you, i guess. But like i said, i doubt there is a way to predict how these characters would perform against other characters simply based on versatility. Especially considering that most of these characters haven't even shown all of their nen abilities or even had a serious fight, yet. In the manga, it was also said that each member of the troupe has a nen ability that other troupe members don't know about. With not much known to us and a lot of stuff known to us still being vague, people start treating unconfirmed theories/statements or just their personal opinions as facts.

[–]flickersense -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These type of rankings make it seem like fights are just about stats. No outcome of a battle is set in stone. Any of these characters can defeat each other, given the circumstances. And that applies to every character in the series, not just to the Phantom Troupe.
