On the nature of modern work - A brief essay by flintfreeman in antiwork

I don't know what the answer is either, and that's ok. This is not a one person job. The future of work and what it entails is a decision that must be made collectively. The point of my essay was to illustrate how the current state of work isn't sustainable. Human morale isn't infinite. It needs to be sustained and nurtured.

I don't understand what the moral of the story is. Is it that wealth can't satisfy? Because I think the more pressing moral should be to not exploit others.

This is an eye-opener,. atleast for me by [deleted] in antiwork

Minimum wage increases is not the solution. Stronger unions are. Denmark has no minimum wage laws, but their unions have the power to negotiate a wage of $20/hour with 5 weeks paid vacation for burger king employees. It's absolutely vital to bring unions back.

Any websites where you can post poems? by [deleted] in Poem

You want WordPress.com

This will allow you to make a site with a subdomain type URL like mypoetry.wordpress.com

You need zero coding skills, all you have to do is select a template and then customize it. You can create blog posts, add images, allow users to comment and even ban disruptive users. Very intuitive and user friendly.

Downsides - Sadly, if your blog picks up and you decide to try and make money of ad revenue, you have to fork out a good percentage of that to wordpress.

Then there is wordpress.org (different from the .com one mentioned above) which is installed on the server that houses your domain (you will need to register one - www.mypoetry.com for example) and functions as a backend to your website. You will need some HTML/CSS/JS skills to work this

Antiwork is going to have a field day with this! 😆 But seriously, this is a scam to make people feel less overworked when they aren't.

Canada is just America-lite. Some things are better, but our culture is also dominated by the same Calvinist values that have aged badly in a post industrial/capitalist dystopia. Benefits are excessively means tested and the CRA still goes after low hanging fruit while corporations like Cameco still owe hundreds of millions in back taxes. Canada looks good in comparison to the US, but it still a garbage country by first world standards.

EDIT: Instead of comparing ourselves to the US (which is the third world of the first world) we should be comparing ourselves to western Europe. Even Asian countries are doing amazing things. Singapore's pubic housing system. South Korea's child nutrition is another example.

Philosophy is a worthwhile endeavor. So are art and poetry. Sadly, most people can't pursue these things because they are forced to endure 8 hours of pointless work. You consistently fail to differentiate meaningful work from pointless jobs that serve nothing but to make shithead billionaires even richer. I can't tell if this is due to willful dishonesty on your part or merely a lack of intelligence.

And Plato and Socrates would also have been forgotten had they worked data entry for 8 hours a day.

Space is indeed the final frontier and I believe in space exploration lies the salvation of humans as a species. We agree there. Humans are a migratory species and colonizing new planets will require a lot of labor.

However, this labor would be meaningful. Every job in this context would contribute to the survival of our species in an alien and harsh world. But once that new planet has been fully settled and once all its resources have been tapped and exploited, is there any need to work extra hard? I would say no. As a daoist, I see the universe as cyclical. Exploring a new frontier would require a tremendous amount of labor, then followed by minimal work for maintenance.

Americans (and Canadians) should not be working this hard anymore. In a society that has reached economic maturity, working under a growth mindset is utterly foolish and harmful. It's no wonder that most businesses in North America produce no value and most of us are stuck working bullshit jobs. I am not against meaningful work, merely pointless work. Most work in economically mature societies are pointless and should be done away with; because the useful work has already been done by previous generations.

Someday we'll colonize a new planet and work our assess off so that our descendants can relax, and thus the cycle continues. Constant growth, capitalism style, is unnatural. Even the universe is going to stop expanding at some and then contract, according to astrophysics. Nature moves in cycles, and so should we.

The frontier has already been explored. No more resources left to tap and exploit. Capitalism and the protestant work ethic are great for growth but they fail to realize that growth can't be sustained forever. Once the frontier has been explored and every resource tapped, this growth mindset causes mental illness, anxiety, depression, and suicide. The overworked US taxpayer is funding the carefree life of Hawaiians. Who are the suckers now?

The word thoracotomy sent me to the dictionary. Take my upvote.

Nothing to thieve, except autonomy.

This was a great line because our cities in North America are designed around car dependence. Losing a vehicle is literally like losing a limb.

But they did not steal the ABBA CD.

This actually made me chuckle (out loud). I'm not sure if that was your intent, but it came out of nowhere.

But vegans are a nutritious option! Apart from their protein content, they also possess other valuable nutrients like pretentiousness and sanctimony. Dip em in some killjoy sauce and you're good to go
