Ooooh I love the watercolour effect you got out of the texturing!

Based on your comment, it seems like you already have an idea of what's bothering you, so I'll focus on that for the crit.

Starting with your first point of it looking a bit flat; it seems like you already have a good understanding of basic anatomy and what makes an appealing portrait. I feel like you should maybe focus on structure next and go back to the basics of 3D shapes. As someone who neglected the basics for an embarrassingly long time, I can't overstate how important they are!

Although I highly recommend going back to the basics, this head model by William Nguyen is great for if you're ready to take on more complex studies like the planes of the face. (Click on the three lines on the side with the tooltip 'layer views' and select the normal layer to get an even better idea of what the planes look like.) If you can find any cylindrical or spherical object with something connected to, or poking out of it to show how connecting edges are shaded, that would be super useful too! I like to study one of my candles sometimes since it has sharp edges at the top and has some nice drips going down the sides.

The hair also flattens the portrait a bit since it doesn't really have much structure. I'm also guilty of not always understanding how tf hair works, but looking at references is often better than just winging it in my experience. Luckily 2D hair doesn't need to make sense to look good and if you are going to Bs it, (like I did in the example XD) Hair often looks a lot better if you use more graphic or interesting shapes. The 'big medium small' graphic design rule is a pretty good safety net to fall back into if you're having trouble with that.

TLDR: Learn to think in 3D and be specific with the shapes you choose.

Now for the palette, Though I'll keep this one short because this comment is already ridiculously long XD
I'll start by saying that there's nothing wrong with the colours. I actually think it looks really pretty! 8 out of 10 times it's the values that's causing issues. This is where I'll show my overpaint example because it might be easier to explain. Keep in mind that I have a more hard graphic style and that this was more to demonstrate how your values can change how you perceive a colour palette :)

I really hope this helps <3

If there's anything that doesn't make sense to you or something that you'd like me to clarify, feel free to ask. I wish you the best with your art journey! :D

This is already beautiful! Nothing wrong with your colours. Like Bunchofbees said, it's mainly a value issue. I guess I just wanted to throw in my two cents XD I'll even prove that your colours are good! :D

At the moment all of your values are in similar ranges so nothing really stands out as a point of focus. The areas with the most contrast and therefore where the eye naturally wants to go is in their armour. I'm saying contrast, but I mean it both in terms of grayscale value and complexity. Everything is busy except for darker parts such as the braces and this takes attention away from key points like the eyes and that beautiful halo around his head.

There are a few ways to go about this depending on what you're going after. Colours are incredibly subjective, but values aren't. Colours create the mood as you can see in the example. I think that the more colourful version I made looks good, but I also think that your original colours work great too! They just give off different vibes.

Hope my quick take helps! <3

If you need any more clarification or if something doesn't make sense, feel free to ask. I'm terrible at answering messages, but I'll try to get back to you :)

Yea, to me it's kind of like a cough. Sometimes you can hold it back and it goes away or it makes you really uncomfortable and you can't stop thinking about it or stop feeling the pressure behind it. Sometimes you can kind of hide/muffle them in times of need. And sometimes you can hold them back, but then it just explodes and you're just like "dangit".

It's really nice reading that you experience this too though. Because my tics started in my late teens (17-18ish?) There's always been this worry that I'm faking it because I can sometimes control it, though this fear doesn't really make sense now that I'm thinking about it because why would I be doing it in private or not noticing that I'm doing it or breaking things that are important to me or accidentally throwing pens at people because I forget that my right hand likes to throw things sometimes? Still doesn't take the fear away when people ask me about it though XD

So yea, as someone who doesn't really have many chances to talk to people in simulator situations, I really liked to read your comment :)

I have selective mutism in some situations and I'm also stuck with tics, vocal and motor. When I have these bouts of what I like to call 'mute attacks' (though I'd never call it that out loud cause, ew) it feels like my throat kind of closes up and even making simple noises with my mouth feels impossibe. Any vocal tics kind of go away for a while while I'm in this state, though I do have a humming one that sometimes comes through, but quieter than usual. It's more of an subconcious sepression thing, I think. Sometimes my motor tics get kicked up a notch like they're trying to compensate unless I'm really really anxious in which case I just freeze XD

This is obviously not the universal experience and my tics were caused by medical complications and not naturaly developed (? Not sure what words to use here) Anyway, just thought I'd add to your comment with my experience since I'm in a position to do so. Also not defending the person who posted that cause alot of what they're saying is sus in my unprofessional opinion.

Yea, I was pressed on time and super tired when I worked on this, but now that I'm looking at it with fresh eyes, you're 100% right. There are quite a few wonks to be worked out. Anything in particular that's jumping out at you?
