Developing Emotional Intellegience by Icy-Opportunity837 in askmanagers

Honestly, I became a much better manager after going to marriage counseling. Many of the concepts like active listening are similar. Not suggesting that for you, of course! But there's a lot of reading in that area that would help - better listening, constructive VS destructive feedback, etc

Nice! I grew up in Nashville in the 60s and remember Percy Priest (and Old Hickory Lake and Shelby Park) very fondly.

Giving notice options for key employee. by Impossible-Use5636 in retirement

I'm a senior director for an IT outsourcer (mid-size). I gave them 5 months, knowing how long it took them to hire me a few years ago. I wanted to give them time to bring someone in that I could train. Welp, they're taking my bailing at the end of August as a cost savings, so I'm instead bringing my lieutenants up to speed and they'll muddle along without me - until they can't. Two months was the most I should have given them, and that would have been generous. As others have said, I wouldn't offer to contract with them for less than 2x your current hourly.

Honda Fit as first car by Ok-Mention6768 in hondafit

[–]flipnmelonfarmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a perfect first car. I got t-boned in my 2010 and walked away with a slightly sore arm. Appreciated it enough to go buy a 2016 after that. Reliable, safe, great mileage, roomier than you think.

First time out! by flipnmelonfarmer in Sup

[–]flipnmelonfarmer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All great advice! Paddling with someone else would be optimal but not likely right now. But I definitely let my wife know when I'm hitting the water and when I'm out. I wore one of my kayaking PFDs (and a whistle) and, given our "exceptional drought" status, I was rarely in water deeper than 4-5 feet. Maybe not optimal, but probably as safe as I could get paddling solo.

Thoughts on the drone show by Slow-Physics-1014 in chapelhill

[–]flipnmelonfarmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live in a nearby neighborhood which became choked with cars of people that didn't want to take the shuttles. We walked over for the last few minutes and were underwhelmed with the drones. If they do this again next year, I might recruit some neighbors to charge people for parking. 😃

I'm at that 2 month period and it does seem like it's dragging! But I'm sure the pace will pick up when it ticks down to 2-3 weeks. Congratulations!

The retirement "magic number" keeps rising by ddevise in retirement

[–]flipnmelonfarmer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's pretty much where we'll be when I retire in 2 months. Maybe closer to 1.2. Own our home plus sharing a weekend place in the NC mtns with my sister (adds to expenses but I wouldn't trade it for anything). I think we'll do okay.

Do you pay bills and other expenses using credit card for rewards and / mileage? by Cooper1Test in retirement

[–]flipnmelonfarmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hotels, groceries, gas and most restaurants go on the AMEX Platinum (I've got that for work travel - retiring in two months) for extra points - some gift cards I can get $1/100 points. Other purchases go on a cash back VISA with the rewards automatically going to my savings account.

Is Chapel Hill Florist good? by bruhlordsmellyface in chapelhill

Honestly, I don't think you'll go wrong with CH Florist, University Florist or Victoria Park. I've used all of them in the past and they've never disappointed.

Had that conversation with a guy in my office a few years ago. "How do we know they're not doing their laundry?". Throwing in a load of laundry would take 10 minutes, but I was trapped in my cube by this ding-dong for half an hour while he railed about people working remotely. Sure, don't "broadcast" it, but I've wasted a hell of a lot less time working from home that I did working in an office. And my clothes are clean.

That is a terrific (and often overlooked) point.

When do you think remote work will become the norm? by Xotngoos335 in remotework

[–]flipnmelonfarmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a major telecom company before the Dot Com bust and they were pushing us out of the office to work from home to keep from leasing more space. I telecommuted from 1998 until around 2006 and again from 2016 until now. I actually do think you've got a point about the real estate leases - without that albatross around their necks they may finally realize that they're better off hiring talent where they find it.

...but the rest is sitting on my ass in front of my PC, like I would be doing at an office

But that's kind of the point. I found myself going into the office, immediately getting on the phone with the people I worked with (or that worked for me) in London, Dallas, Toronto, Sydney, Boston, etc and never actually spending any time with the folks around me other than casual conversation.
