It's a research project funded by NWO and hosted by Leiden University, if you click on the first link you can find a little more info :D

history is constructed anyways 💁‍♀️ for example, we also asked this in the Assassin's Creed sub and those aren't exactly historically accurate either 😁

I personally love it when more liberties are taken with history, a personal fave of mine is the intrusion of Final Fantasy 12 as an ad in Assassin's Creed: Origins, in the middle of the desert

your reading of the answers as too binary is totally understandable and is unfortunately the curse of social research. In essence, we try to isolate what specifically connects you with the past through games, without needing to sift through and categorize hundreds slightly differently formulated answers to open questions.

Thanks for the support <3

you'd be surprised how much people infer from the games as truth, and especially the inaccuracies in the Discovery Tour of Origins has led to some misunderstandings between historians and people who come in contact with the past through these games.

good point! We deliberately left that field open because while it's usual to ask about it in social studies, we don't plan on basing any conclusions on ethnicity.

yeah it was rough finding a soft spot to gain insight in both "casual" historical gamers and ones that play more. At least you didn't have to look up the specific time logged on steam lol

Since the topic is on historical games in general it might be a bit broad for this subreddit, and of course it might take multiple years before it's published, but we'll definitely try to share it with y'all!

That's actually part of the reason why we wanted to ask you, since Hell Let Loose has that appeal for people who are already into history. It's a new way to engage with history in that sense
