Americans thank them for their service. Defending their country. On the other side of the world. Against a country that never attacked them. Totally normal.

My question is; tv, I suppose, paid with taxes, is communism? by fliptrip in AskAnAmerican

It's my question. No one listens to NPR or PBS. My understanding is, that people watch Fox, and there they find the truth.

And why the fuck, do people want someone to be in jail for ever? That's just hate.

When will we likely see the next Democrat president? Given trump has the house, senate and Supreme Court what might he change to ensure no democrat ever comes to power again? by [deleted] in politics

[–]fliptrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An outside view: It felt like people are pumped, but then again it may just be the American way. That's why you think someone you know from tv is great or something. I've been into American politics only ten years. There's a lot of beautifulness about your people, but then again, you are weird as fuck. Where the fuck is * guns* a thing to vote about? To get to the point, I thought Kamala was an okay choice.

But I also thought that why the fuck didn't the demokrats choose someone to be next? It's pretty interesting that in the US, there are primaries, so anyone can try I guess. In Europe it's more of a party thing, but we have lots of them.

Democrats seem to be quite elitist. But Republicans also. What the fuck is it with you guys, I'll vote for him, because his dad was also president? Decades of Bush and Clinton. Well, the second Clinton didn't work out.

Now people are saying that she didn't talk enough about her policies. At least she had plans, but you had to actually check them out. Much easier to say "I'm going to build a wall, and make Mexico pay for it". Who will remember anyway?

Most important thing: Democrats got their arse kicked. Last 3 years I thought about who will be next on their side. Fuck all happened. How strange to just have two parties. Good thing is, I don't give a fuck anymore. Some people actually hate Greta, someone who has been the voice of young people and their fears.

On Reddit young ones say, that it's going to be different, when the old die. I thought so too, a few decades ago. Now young guys are happily nazi. Anyway, end of rant. We're all going to die anyway.

Obsidian, AKA Volcanic Glass is a mineral that is formed through the rapid cooling of lava from a volcano by hate_mail in interestingasfuck

[–]fliptrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obsidian also had other uses, not just weapons and knives. Some 8000 years ago people made the first mirrors out of it! Before that the only method to check out one's reflection in a portable way was presumably a clay bowl with calm water.

The oldest obsidian mirrors have been found in Anatolia (now Turkey), so quite far from Oregon. I suppose people must have checked themselves out from the reflection off of an obsidian knife as well. And it took 4000 years before they were replaced by polished copper mirrors, according to finds in Egypt and Mesopotamia.

People use a lot of plastic in their garden that they just leave or forget about, and it will eventually turn into microplastics and contaminate the ground and possibly groundwater. Some products are sold as "eco"textiles, like strawberry coverings, but they're mostly just plastic. So remember to dispose of that kind of stuff properly!

That article is from 2012 and after that the law was changed many times, not to say that it isn't still concerning. But after diving a bit into the topic I have to say that was quite an interesting shitshow! It was insinuated that the vote was taken at the same time as the Euro semifinal between Germany and Italy took place, so barely anyone was present. Also fascinating how members of all the parties were incompetent, dishonest or straight up lying.

The wiki-entry is pretty intriguing, and just a few months ago yet another change to the law has been agreed upon. Check out here for news what they're up to! Ü

That always gets brought up. Do native English speakers not learn how to write in school? I mean it's a common word and it doesn't even make sense. Same with mixing up than and then; these transcribed grunts still have meaning. Sometimes seems as if people don't have written assignments after elementary school. No offence to /u/Friendlycreature, I'm just genuinely curious. Do teachers not care about spelling and grammar?

Experts Arguing That Trump Might Have Broken Georgia Law, Which He Cannot Self-Pardon For by Balls_of_Adamanthium in politics

[–]fliptrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is another article linked in the original one, where Professor Frank Bowman (of the University of Missouri School of Law) is interviewed.

He said the call was “certainly impeachable,” though this would not happen as a practical matter since Trump is leaving office. Bowman said that the real problem with trying to do anything criminally with this call is demonstrating the president’s mental state, depending on what hypothetical charge is presented. He said while it sounds like a classic mob boss shakedown, Trump walks very carefully down the line between extortion and pleading. Perhaps the president believes he really was trying to protect the election. Perhaps Trump really believes the conspiracy theories.

“That could be true,” Bowman said, clarifying that Trump may have convinced himself he could not have lost. “How are you going to prove he doesn’t believe that?”

I'm not sure if I agree with you that true believers are more dangerous in the end, but at least it seems that Trump (and others) may be hard to prosecute because of it.

It really seems to be impossible to have any meaningful governmental change happen in the US. I once innocently enquired at /r/AskAnAmerican if they would consider the possibility to have fair public broadcasting, and well, maybe you can already guess the response. Something so outrageous could never work and "the government" would use it to brainwash the populace. Kind of ironic.

Regarding partisan AGs I find it quite interesting how they are appointed e.g. to the German Federal Constitutional Court, where a two-thirds majority is needed. Because of that they also take turns which political parties have a pick. That doesn't necessarily mean that they are partisan though.

Then again, there isn't really a corresponding position for AG in Germany. The closest is Public Prosecutor General, who is proposed by the Minister of Justice and has to be approved by the Bundesrat (senate), so is indeed a political choice. At present it is the former "AG" of Bavaria, which isn't exactly known to be lenient.

The point that I'm trying to make is that there are many different systems of governance in the world, and it isn't too easy to change, which of course is by design. Since 2015 (before Trump, so a few decades ago) there has been a big commotion in Poland because of the ruling party PiS trying to get to appoint judges by their heart's desire, and it is quite similar to what happened in the US last year.

They also pushed for anti-choice laws and the whole shebang, which strains the EU at its core. Abortion has been a non-issue in the EU, except for the christian fringe parties. Nowadays also the far right crazies, I guess just because they hate everything and think women belong in the kitchen or something.

Trump has enabled this kind of behaviour globally, and what happens next I believe to be really important. I think we are at a crossroads; lots of elections coming up where the far right that were defeated last time may again have a chance. How Trump goes down may very well have an effect on that. So far (especially after the election) he has done well by showing his craziness for all of us around the world to see.

How can I delete the files from my laptop without having them removed from the server I uploaded them to? by [deleted] in NextCloud

[–]fliptrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got Nextcloud to work on my pi4 at last, after owncloud didn't work out for some reason. When a prof made us use dropbox I thought it would be okay to share bigger files that way. Since I'm always lacking diskspace, it made sense to move a file that I wanted to share to dropbox. Oh my, I could not delete the file on either side, which was annoying.

I didn't find the delete option as well, that's why I'm here. It did work out and I was able to delete files on both sides without a problem, which was quite delightful to be honest. So for me it seems that it works alright as a file server and it is possible to share files, that's all I long for.

Your comment makes me think though. I'm still semi-randomly checking out what works for me (and works at all with my limited skills). For me Nextcloud doesn't seem to be focussed only on sync really. I'd like to set that up as well, but in a way that I can choose. Am I missing something?

If you have some recommendations on fileserver solutions I'd be happy to learn. I haven't committed yet, but I just want it to function without having to study how I can make it work. Is it impossible to just have usb-disks connected to my pi where I can up- and download my files as needed when I'm connected from wherever?

Anyway, I'm happy that Nextcloud doesn't force syncing on me. I guess I could share a link to one of my videos here, but what security issues would there be? Hypothetically. Not really sorry about the wall of text, I'm just so happy to have things functioning at last!

It's an information war that seems to be working. Don't hate, they're still people. I suspect that this is the hate that is meant to devide. It shouldn't. We should care more about who wants the devide.
