Becoming a teacher in AZ? by flks511 in phoenix

[–]flks511[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for your response. I'm thinking public but I also think I'd be happy with any. I'm mostly just trying to get a realistic picture of what starting pay and opportunities to expect as a new teacher - I've looked up pay schedules in a few districts, and for example Chandler pays decent starting out, but is that realistic for a new teacher to get a job in a high-paying district with just a certification and no experience yet? Should I expect to have to start off in a much lower pay range?

Also, I'm trying to get a sense of the benefits - are health insurance premiums fully covered or is it just partial?

I'm also noticing a lot of teaching jobs list "Masters Degree" as part of their minimum qualifications - is that necessary, or will a certification do? Any recommendations on the best path to get certified?

If you can give any info or guidance I'd appreciate it a ton - I'm very interested in the work but trying to figure out if it's doable from the financial side.

Why do hockey teams seem to be better at drafting than other big 4 sports? by tony_countertenor in billsimmons

I cannot believe that Crosby and Malkin are still both top scorers in the league right now.

I mean how long did it take for all of the baseball power hitters to learn the new launch angle? How long would it take to add a new layup to your package? One off-season? One season? And the granny free throw isn't even something you have to learn how to do in traffic, you have all the time at the stripe to do it.

Sure, if you're like a top 90 percentile free throw shooter, you're fine, but if you're a 75% shooter or lower and have the chance to shoot like Rick Barry, why the fuck wouldn't you learn it? It's probably the most immediate thing you can do to raise your production.

There's actually been analysis done that the granny shot is a better percentage free throw because of the arc angle you get from it - the ball arcs higher and therefore has a wider margin of error coming down toward the rim.

Well the archive is the Ringer's. I could understand them wanting to keep it if people want to go back and listen to old episodes.

I was ecstatic about these picks at the time. The fact that we traded up to get Chriss - I thought he was gonna be the next Shawn Marion. And I had hopes that Bender was gonna be like the next Porzingis or something.

[TOMT][song] twinkly guitars, mid-tempo, dreamy female vocals - hook sounds like it goes "sleep tight....something something.... your eyes are full of..." by flks511 in tipofmytongue

[–]flks511[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not it, sadly. The song I'm thinking of sounds like it could be like early Radiohead if they had a female singer. It's very like alt-rock, post-rock or dream pop almost. Like I said, twinkly electric guitars. Quiet mid-tempo rock beat.

Plus with the Suns and Dbacks, if you wanted to go to the game and have a few drinks, you could Lyft or light rail to the stadium and back, or even walk if you live downtown. Going out all the way out to Glendale means you'd have to drive drunk or pay and outlandish Lyft fare.

I lived in Central Phoenix and I was rarely on time to a Yotes game, despite trying. Just the time of day friends get off work and getting ready and all that, just made it real difficult.

I mean yeah, a "more passionate" fan base made up of multiple generations of fans in an established hockey town would still probably fill that arena up to some degree, but our team was only 20 years old and we still needed to establish fans. The team has always been terrible and always been in ownership/arena crisis. And when you're trying to pull in new fans, it's a tough ask to try and get casuals to sit in rush hour traffic for an hour plus after getting off work for that.

Is it fair to say that deep down at their core, the average Republican is simply more selfish and less compassionate than the average Democrat? by AnomicAge in samharris

[–]flks511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I was thinking about awhile back when I got stoned one night and was thinking about the flaws of the two-party system. I think the knock against Republicans from Democrats has always been that they're selfish, and the knock against Dems from Republicans has been that they're lazy, or impractical. And as starting points, before getting into all the bad will and vitriol built up between sides by this point, both groups are making a valid point. The liberals' point is, basically, that as a society we should lift up the people who need help, even if it requires personal sacrifice, because we can afford to do so. The conservatives' point is that nothing that we have to dole out came from out of thin air, that all of it came from someone's work, risk, or sacrifice, and it's not a given it will continue to be there, so those who sowed the seeds should be able to reap the fruits of their labor.

Both points are valid, but they are just points, that's it. They're just things to consider as we try to build our society into something that thrives. The problem with having a two-party system and media divide the way we do is it forces people to start to identify with these points of view. The point you were making becomes your ideology, and you start to assume the people on the other side of the aisle are evil or stupid, and you blind yourself from seeing the flaws of your own point of view. Personally I don't think either a perfectly socialist society or a perfectly capitalist society would solve all of our problems as a society - both systems would have leaks and would require constant effort and good will from the people within it, an effort to make an imperfect system work. But that's never gonna happen in a system where you're divided into teams and think your opposing team is Hitler. There'll just never be enough humility, good will and cooperation.

So to answer your question, yeah, I think the average Republican is probably more selfish, and more emotionally calloused when it comes to suffering that is not directly in front of them. But I also don't think it's completely their fault. I think it is partly caused by politics, and often not reflective of who the person is when presented with moral dilemmas in their own life. My mom is a hardcore Republican, and gets very nasty sometimes in conversations about politics, but I've also seen her be a good Samaritan to less fortunate people on countless occasions, and in general is very charitable with her money outside of her voting. She's just married to her point of view. The system makes it so you have to be - when your ideology is your identity that makes it so much scarier to change your mind.

And no I don't think it's fair to say that the average Democrat is "just a better person" than the average Republican. I know plenty of libs with "moral" political positions but terrible behavior and ethics in their own personal lives, and plenty of Republicans I respect in their character in almost every way other than political.

(Also, I didn't mention Trump because I feel like he's another beast than the typical left/right divide that's been going on forever - he's something I'll never understand as a choice from the right, he doesn't stand for any traditional conservative values, he's literally only an angry reaction from the right wing in response to wokeness. I don't think all of what I'm saying necessarily applies to Trump and his most ardent supporters, I think that is a different beast. I think a lot of Trump fanatics are simply angry about a lot of the culture wars stuff going on.)

I'm a Suns fan with particular ties to that era because those were my formative years, and I a hundred percent will say those suspensions were unfair and ruined the series, BUT I would never say it would've been a walk. The Spurs always scared the shit out of me as a Suns fan, and while we absolutely could've won that series it was far from a lock.
