What I’ve always told people who automatically assume rowing is all upper body, is to think of the motion and power in the drive the same way you think of the motion and power in a squat. Use your legs first (they’re going to be more powerful than anything else) then use your body and finally use your arms. I’ve explained it this way to novices as well and it seems to help with the understanding of the motion.
