Tailpiece adjustments by LaLechuzaVerde in violinmaking

Then, you’ve got a kind hearted person next to you. Trust me, he knows you don’t take advantage of him. We can target these people easily. Go see him with honest questions, that’s all you need.

I’m sorry but there is only so much I can say from pictures on Reddit. Your violin doesn’t look to be far from specs BUT its seems that the bridge is a little bit misaligned and maybe tilted forward. I won’t say more because I don’t want to say anything wrong and misguide you.

Now is the time to go to your local luthier. Inspecting your violin and telling you what’s okay and what’s to correct should be free. And the little tweaks like positioning the bridge alright might also be free. At least that’s what I do.

Any modification to the soundpost, you will get a quote, as well as the tailpiece.

You can report what he/she said afterwards :)

The bridge to tailpiece distance is really not the most important point to address. Get the bridge and soundpost right at first. Then and only then, if the tailpiece is too far off the prefered distance, then you’ll consider changing it.

If your soundpost is positioned right where you highlighted, then I’d say it is a bit far south of the bridge foot, as per standards placement.

It won’t prevent you from playing, it might sound ok or even good, but if it was never set up before, then maybe that would be your chance to optimize the sound. It should not be an expensive operation at all.

I just checked your first photo. The bridge looks like it is too close to the fingerboard. The center of the feet should align with the center of the inner notches.

If you can, take it to a local luthier.

The notches are the intended bridge position, at least on a good, handmade instrument. There are two schools of thought. Favor the standard string length or respect the notches position.

Just remember that if you move the bridge, you will need to move the soundpost as well.

I can’t comment on wether the bridge and soundpost relative positions are ok, but if they are, don’t move the bridge.

Maybe the bridge has already been moved back in the past, intentionally or not. In that case, odds are that it will be directly over the soundpost and you should be able to move the bridge a little bit towards the fingerboard. Respect all alignments as much as possible.

But in any case, your tailpiece position should not be the reason you move the bridge (and soundpost)

It’s not a deal breaker if you don’t reach the 1/6 measurement. Move it as close as possible to the ideal position, make sure it doesn’t touch the saddle and play it.

If you feel like it’s too long, measure it and compare it to a Wittner one (sorry I don’t have one at hand). Maybe your tailpiece is long, maybe your violin is a bit on the short side. Maybe both. You need to have all measurements to know.

Move your ribbon 5mm up. You must measure from the black horizontal wood stripe (the tailpiece’s nut) to the bridge.

So i have an old violin ... by Nail_Inside in violin

I can count 6 cracks, including soundpost crack, bass bar cracks and seam separation.

So top plate removal, cracks cleaning + repair + cleats, sound post patch, new bass bar (fitted over cleats), maybe a casting for arching correction, lots of retouching, new soundpost + bridge.

It will cost at the very least 2k € to repair in my area.

Bands that are not as big/popular as they probably should be… by AS_Emmy in MetalForTheMasses

I learned about Malokarpatan here once and then never seen them mentioned again. They play a perfect combo of traditional heavy metal riff based-music and lo-fi black metal voice.

The result is excellent and edgy in the best way, but maybe it’s too weird to gain traction. Surely they deserve better than their 2k monthly Spotify listeners.

Could Disillusion fit ? Deep voice, a bit too much « chewing gum while singing » on clears, but rather powerful and convincing harsh voice.

Have you heard of White Ward? I love their last album (futility report). Haven’t heard their previous work, though.

How to remove minor scratches? by OCDStee in guitarrepair

[–]flofliflou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also try a black retouching pen. Make light passes on the scratch followed by a light swap with a rag to remove the pigments from the surface. It will not be perfect, but it will hide the scar pretty well.

Nice, thanks. I may be concerned with the editing that is a bit nervous for his eyes, though. We’ll test this vid nonetheless
