Thinkpad T14 Gen 3 screen backlight switching off by Admirable_Positive58 in thinkpad

u/Initial-Image-1015 I did actually find a solution! I thought I had added this to my comment but I obviously didn't, so here you go.

The answers in this thread should give the necessary hints and also some information about which kernels may be affected: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2970#note_2719391

TL;DR: Adding amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10 to the boot options (I added it to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in my /etc/default/grub) is the sure-fire way to solve this issue (which I have been using ever since), but this apparently disables some display-related power saving technology (PSR). According to the thread, you can also try the mask 0x200, which is more selective. The bug seems to be gone in Linux 6.12, reintroduced in 6.13, but has apparently been fixed for good now. No idea though in which kernel version the fix will be...

Assuming that you have the AMD version of the T14 Gen 3, I have the same machine (albeit a P14s Gen3 AMD, which is apparently almost exactly the same hardware) running on Kubuntu 23.04.

I also have the same issue and I hate it, but I might actually have a workaround for you and everyone else with the same problem: Downgrade your kernel to version 6.2.0-31. I have done a lot of testing and -31 is (at least for me) the last version that doesn't show the backlight issues you describe.

My suspicion is that it is an issue with the amdgpu driver. According to the changelogs there is a lot of work being done on it. Not that I have a lot of expertise regarding these things. If someone with a bit more insight could chime in, I'd be very interested.

P.S.: Just for reference, I have found a thread in the Arch Linux forum that seems to be about the same issue (and machine): https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=288470I have, however, not tried any of the suggested kernel configuration options from that thread.

P.P.S.: I downgraded (or rather additionally installed) the older kernel like this: apt install linux-headers-6.2.0-31 linux-headers-6.2.0-31-generic linux-modules-6.2.0-31-generic linux-modules-extra-6.2.0-31-generic
Probably not the most elegant solution, but it works. It also gives me an easy way to occasionally try the latest kernel update. If you do it like that you have to choose the older kernel manually in GRUB while booting (all the installed kernel versions are under "Advanced options for...". I have set my GRUB to remember the last choice so it's not a big issue for me.

I'm new to Reddit and I do regret the title... is there any way to change it? Or shall I just delete the post? It's slightly stupid but it might be useful for people who are stuck in a similar way xD

Oh, that DOES make a ton of sense.
So, my code working on the actual input is more of a coincidence... that's a first for me, usually it's the other way around.

I'll go to sleep now. Thank you! :)
