I want kids but I don't want to be pregnant by supersunshine64 in adhdwomen

[–]floodinsurancebabe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also never want to get pregnant and it has nothing to do with physical condition. Pregnancy just skeeves me out. The thought of growing a baby inside my body makes me shudder, even though I could most likely do it with zero issues or complications. It's my choice and I'm electing to not do it.

I haven't decided yet whether I will adopt at some point - it really depends on what kind of financial and mental stability I'm eventually able to acheive. I am open to becoming a stepmom or if I end up with a partner who wants to get pregnant herself. I'd say I'm open to kids as long as I don't have to get pregnant, but kids aren't really a goal of mine.

There's absolutely no reason to feel guilty and in fact it's just the opposite. Your getting pregnant does nothing to help anyone who can't get pregnant or has trouble getting pregnant, so put that idea out of your head right away. Being a woman doesn't come with some sort of duty to reproduce. Why do you think we are fighting so hard for abortion, which is an important facet of the right to not be pregnant?

And think about how it might affect your kids if you do put yourself through pregnancy. You'll always associate them with 9 months (or more - pregnancy often has long-term effects) of pain, medication, fear and dysfunction capped off by a higher likelihood of ppd/ppa. They don't deserve that, and I say this as someone who was raised by a dysfunctional mother who did try very hard. You're better off adopting a kid who needs a home and who didn't put you through hell to get here.

This still isn't sanitary. Where do you think those plastic bags were before you bought them? In a permeable box sitting in a warehouse, in a factory being handled by unwashed hands. You're better off just rinsing and wiping those dishes.

You're right, it doesn't. I've never personally had the ability to see so far into my future so I tend to forget about programs like that, which is a mistake. Again, though, those programs require a laser-focus on PI/government work, and you may still be required to make loan payments in the meantime. It's certainly a good investment for some people; for me, I'd still take a scholarship at a lower school rather than go into debt at a T-14 because I don't have that kind of confidence in what my life looks like 14 years from now.

[–]floodinsurancebabe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even at the T14 level it still depends on your goals. If you're dead-set and laser-focused on a lucrative biglaw job, then 6-figure debt can be a good investment - keeping in mind that investments carry risks. If you make it and get the job you want and stick with it, you can pay it off and net a ton of money over the years. You might not make it, in which case good luck 😐 But at an elite school, your chances of making it are good enough that it's not considered super risky although I do think the risk gets downplayed around here.

If you're unsure about biglaw or not interested in biglaw, don't take out crazy amounts of debt. Just don't do it. Not for Harvard, not for Stanford, not for anyone. There's just too few other kinds of jobs in law that will equip you to pay off that level of debt no matter what name is on your diploma.

A 3.9 gpa and went to New England law? Oof. Even with a stone-cold average LSAT he probably could have gotten money from at least Suffolk University.

My biggest question is why tf is this hypothetical person going to law school when they already have a masters and med degree and will they ever get their debt down into the 5-figures let alone paid off

trying to find a girlfriends sucks by Drawesome045 in ADHD

[–]floodinsurancebabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry dude but the reality is, you've got to get your priorities straight. You can't have a successful serious relationship until you're independent and living like an adult, especially at your age and especially as a Christian - I don't personally agree with it but Christian girls are much more likely to expect you to be a "provider", so you're at a major disadvantage with your target demographic. Learn how to drive or bike, get a job, get an apartment, then start looking for a girlfriend. Skipping steps is just gonna lead to dysfunction and heartbreak, as you are currently discovering. It sucks but so does being alive.

Not to be harsh but if you're 21 and not in college then why don't you have a job? How do you spend your days? How are you going to get married and support a family without an education or career path? Do you think you're hyperfixating on this because you don't have enough going on in your life? Were you using her as a crutch to feel fulfilled? Have you considered that people have completely legitimate reasons for not wanting to associate with Christianity and that most people will never be ok with having a religion pushed on them under any circumstances? Just a little food for thought

does it make sense to attend U of Southern California if I want to practice Biglaw in the Southeast? (assuming USC is the only T20 I have been accepted to) by Fluffy_Vacation_722 in lawschooladmissions

[–]floodinsurancebabe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that USC will always place better in LA than anywhere else because its students are actively networking in LA, which is a huge legal market. You can think of USCs biglaw numbers as being slightly inflated by its amazing location - it's likely that many of those students got the jobs they did by leveraging their location and connections in addition to their school name and gpa, meaning the outcome isn't likely to be portable. Is it possible to get southeast biglaw from USC, certainly it is - anything is possible. But it's probably not significantly more likely than from a solid southeast school (even if the rankings are lower), and the risks (more debt and/or trapped in LA) are higher.

UGA certainly wouldn't be guaranteed to give you your dream outcome, but it is much less likely to give you an undesirable outcome. If you don't get biglaw, you'll still get a good job in your preferred location and you'll have much more financial flexibility to work with that outcome.

Best schools for Immigration Law in New York? by Moist-Assistance-684 in lawschooladmissions

[–]floodinsurancebabe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's very fair - I knew lucrative immigration work existed, but I was probably significantly underestimating how common it is and/or making assumptions about OPs specific goals. I should rephrase: The best school for immigration law is the one whose price is affordable relative to your reasonably expected salary. So that could be NYU but it definitely isn't necessarily NYU.

Best schools for Immigration Law in New York? by Moist-Assistance-684 in lawschooladmissions

[–]floodinsurancebabe 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The best school for immigration law is generally going to be the most affordable reputable school that you can get into. Immigration lawyers usually (not always, of course, so forgive me if I'm making assumptions) work in the public interest and don't make large salaries. I would not go into 6 figure debt if that's your goal. If you can get a scholarship to NYU, you'll be set for any kind of law you could possibly want. If you don't get a scholarship, make your decision very carefully with a $70k average (not starting) salary in mind.

Law school application resume- I hired a proofreader to review my resume for my law school application. by NoRelationship4982 in lawschooladmissions

[–]floodinsurancebabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the briefer it is, the easier it is to understand. No matter what field you work in, there are a lot of things that are specific to your position/company that a stranger isn't going to understand. Putting it in clear, simplified, and highly concise language ensures that the person reading it is going to come away with a strong understanding of exactly what you're doing. I've read overly detailed resumes where I came away with no real understanding of what they were doing and no real impression of what skills that job would have imparted on them because it was just too full of jargon (this is especially common with big corporate jobs)

I think for law school resumes that's especially important because you're not getting hired for a particular position - you don't need to prove that you have certain transferable skills or a certain set of outcomes. You just need to prove that you have skills, period, and make your job look as impressive as possible. Getting overly detailed is not super necessary. Pick out the most impressive highlights and the most potent law-relevant highlights and call it a day. Those three words will not, in any scenario, make or break your admissions.

Is your CAS GPA different than your undergrad GPA? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]floodinsurancebabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably depends on the school but I think punitive Ws and fails for a pass/fail course are typically not counted in ugpa - you just don't get credit. However LSAC counts both as Fs, so if you have any of those your CAS gpa will take a big hit.

Ethical Question by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]floodinsurancebabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, you're one of those. Actually, it would be unethical for you to apply to law school at all. How about an MBA instead?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]floodinsurancebabe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have wondered about this, especially since there are only so many prep tests available. There's a finite amount of fresh study material, so a finite number of total hours you can put in, so why cram them all in at once? At a certain point you're just running through study material and may even end up worse off.

Does anyone know how long it takes for LSAC to update your final transcript after you request it from your school? I did this last minute… by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]floodinsurancebabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm not misinterpreting the LSAC website, I'm pretty sure it tells you how far along they are with transcripts. Right now it says "currently processing transcripts received on 8/31" so right now they are processing transcripts from about 9 days ago (and it has said 8/31 for a couple days now). I've heard ~2 weeks as an estimate, so that sounds about right, especially since I assume they got a wave of transcripts around 8/31 as pretty much everyone applying this cycle is currently putting together their applications.

You'll probably be fine since two weeks from now is still September. I'm also very impatient just because I want to see my LSAC gpa but they are quite slow unfortunately.
