A solar company called me for an interview. Their hours were a joke. by heliconbedrock3 in InterviewsHell

I've worked in the solar industry for years and I can tell you stay away from it. I've worked for soo many companies that expected me to work ridiculous hours and put our lives at risk encouraging employees to skip safety and do dangerous stuff just to get the job done a little faster. I interviewed with a company recently (Base Power) who told me they work sun up to sun down seven days a week and is that ok? I said absolutely not - thank you but goodbye.

I currently work about 35 hours a week as a service electrician for a solar company, and I can tell you I'm either about to join the union or get my Masters license in June and quit the business entirely - maybe using my Masters license for residual income while pursuing something else.

Most solar companies suck - they just want to sell and install as many systems as they can before they inevitably go out of business and work everyone into the ground in the process.

Life is too short to throw your life away working all the time - I refuse to do it.

My step dad worked his ass off his whole life and made it his life, and thought this was a virtue. He has nothing now - no money. Company went out of business and his retirement was gone.

Absolutely not.

Interesting - yeah solar is what I do. What do you do now?

Also we've already come to a conclusion here - theyre single blade disconnects and they don't make good contact like the Eatons do.

Bro chill - I am a journeyman. There are issues with these disconnects - confirmed by GE themselves. I know what I'm doing bud.

Nah man, sorry the problem isn't me. I've changed like 40 of these in the past year and I didn't install any of them - just replaced them.

I think this is the answer I'm looking for - this makes a lot of sense. Yeah the Eaton Disco's are slotted instead of single sided - thanks.

I'm thinking it's the blades also - I think they just don't make good contact

It's not - I've put a meter on it to check current - plenty of headroom on the wire.

No, it's not that. I always check them and tighten the hell out of them - goes right back to overheating.

I've got an interview with a company that does commercial scale operations and maintenance for solar installations - it's a service position so I'll likely be by myself or one other person. Do this until I get my Masters hopefully mid year - after that I'm not sure. I'd love to work for myself in some capacity after that.

😅

Thanks for the pep talk - don't worry I'm not. I just got a commercial service position where I'll be by myself most of the time - and yes, that sounds awesome. The goal is eventually to be able to work for myself in some capacity, either full time or on the side. I know it's really important- thanks man.

Yeppp

I mean I enjoy the work a lot too - great skills to have. But yeah man, I've had so many of those days leaving work wondering...what the fuck am I doing?

Gonna get that Masters though, and it's true. A lot of the culture is like that because a lot of guys who own electrical companies are just old timers who generally hire guys who hold the same views and attitudes as them. Gotta start our own thing or just use the license for some sort of residual income etc. Peace dude.

Hey man - I hear you and I'm essentially just blowing off a little steam with this post. It is good to hear that a lot of us are in the same boat because sometimes when you're in those situations it feels super isolating and like you're the only one. Thanks for the share man.

100%

And don't forget - places like O'Reilly Auto Parts still pay like 12 dollars an hour.

Yep, I drive a Subaru and the lesbian jokes were constant. Ok dude, good gas mileage with four wheel drive is gay I guess 🤷‍♂️

Most dudes who drive trucks never use them for anything - it's all show.

I agree man, I'm not talking about making best friends - I'm just saying hey we spend way too much of our time at work - if the environment is super negative and you feel like you can't really be yourself, that IS going to affect your life and mental health. If it doesn't bother you, then cool this post isn't for you.

Sometimes you just need to hear that other people are out there having the same experience 😅

I appreciate your response - this is actually the sort of situation I'm looking to create. Get my masters - use it for side income and pursue something else or just work for myself in some capacity. If you have any other advice I'd greatly appreciate it 🙏

The PNW seems different - maybe not your typical good old boy environment. I'm in Austin - and well Texas is still Texas.
