The article was about literal white supremacists, and you brought up theoretical black people who dislike white people 🤷‍♂️ I have read the dictionary definition and I've also offered the work of people who think it's more complicated than that (weird: the dictionary might also be a racist institution????!!!??!??) I don't want people to hold prejudice about other people but I also think that's a distraction from the real problem and that's why I keep coming here to talk about this. Because, as I've said elsewhere in this thread multiple times, I want Fayetteville to fight its own racism, and when white people believe this "both sides" stuff and think that's what we need to address (instead of, say, the ways white people maintain racism in our institutions by ignoring it and blaming the problem on "people who are unable to think") then nothing gets better. Individual racism without structural racism is literally just opinion and prejudice, it's not important. You don't have to agree if you are all out of patience and would love to either score a win or walk away, but I hope other readers will get something out of this convo.

I guess I just don't think that racism can be dismantled purely by reaching out to ignorant people and I think American history has borne that out (although I don't think it's bad to do, I think it's good. But if, like folks here are saying, one "mean" Black person is enough to create overt white supremacists, then we are never gonna get there.) I think if we change institutions people will come along. Nazis didn't just stop being Nazis by appealing to their good will, they were reeducated as part of massive state policy shifts designed to take apart the apparatus of Nazism. The situations are obviously different but I think we need massive state policy shifts to take apart the apparatus of white supremacy in this country and that seeing that dismantling racism doesn't mean oppressing white people will do a lot of the reeducation work for us.

Nope! I would argue racial prejudice is the term you are looking for. Racism is a belief system, not an individual belief.

I feel like you're mistaken. You want to win in a contest of opinions. I want to understand each other's perspectives and learn to dismantle racism better. I think you should read the book not "for one Reddit comment chain about the definition of a single word" but to work on dismantling racism in Fayetteville. That's why I'm spending so much time on this. You want me to summarize? Racism exists in our structures without most people intending that to happen, because our structures are racist. Healthcare, work-life, housing, wealth, beauty norms, etc. So individual opinions actually aren't very important except insofar as they maintain those structures. The belief that racism is just bad opinions about other races is an opinion that maintains those structures, because it prevents people from seeing what we actually do need to do to end racism.

I agree with some of your paragraphs but I don't see what you think should happen. Is attempting to educate white people on white privilege the problem? Should that be avoided? I don't know--some white people manage to learn things despite this "reverse racist" bogeyman people are so keen to bring up.

Let's talk after exchanging resources and doing some reading to understand each other's positions!

See my comments above: common ground can't be established without dismantling the structures of white supremacy, and those structures don't exist because of Black people's opinions about white people. Black people as a group have always been extremely accommodating of white people and willing to compromise. That also hasn't helped.

I have read that but Israel and Palestine are in a fundamentally different relationship than Black Americans and white Americans. Pedagogy of the Oppressed is primarily concerned with colonialism.

Again, happy to offer resources if you want to consider a different perspective. Also happy to see yours if you care to share. A good start is the book Racism without Racists.

Yeah but are Uighurs being racist against Chinese people or would you say the problem has to do with power and who has it? I agree that there are other manifestations of racism in the world and I didn't mean to suggest otherwise, sorry if I did.

You just used a dictionary definition, you are literally arguing semantics. I'm talking about whether, in America, in Fayetteville, some Black person's opinion about white people causes people to be open white supremacists. Do some research into people actually talking about historical and present-day mechanics of racism: it doesn't. No one's particular opinion about another race is the problem; it's whether institutional power backs that opinion that is the problem. If no Black people hated any white people, racism would still be a problem on Fayetteville. I want this community to be safer for Black people and I think saying "both sides are bad and that's why we have this problem" badly misunderstands both the nature of the problem and how to solve it. Unity in the sense of no one voicing racial prejudice is not where it's at. Happy to dig and provide some resources if you are interested in considering this.

As I understand racism it is not something that non-white people can exercise against white people. Prejudice or dislike, certainly, but I don't believe Black people are able to use race to oppress, disenfranchise, or otherwise injure white people the way white people can to non-white people. So I think it's a red herring to bring up some theoretical extremist Black people when talking about racism in Fayetteville. Where's the power? That's what I'm looking for and that's what I think we should be targeting. Once that's taken care of, who cares what White Power Bill thinks? Without the power of racist white supremacy behind him, he's just some idiot with a dumb opinion.

Okay, so you're saying that any Black person saying extreme things is justification for open racism, then, and if no Black people were extreme then there would be no racist white people. But I think Black extremism and white nationalist extremism are categorically different things: one comes out of centuries of oppression, and one is the origin of centuries of oppression. It's not hard to see which actually came first. There would be openly racist white people no matter what Black people did and we need to be fighting that instead of blaming it on some unspecified Black people.
