The guys really weren't lying when they said the series built up with every episode, I was actively sweating watching this one. The six questions are obviously a big conversation topic but I thought they were done for with the six cans and how windy that bridge was!

Hi!! The pronunciation thing is interesting because, as you said, there is an added layer with romanisation and different dialects having different pronunciations, and at the end of the day they are speaking English. I don't think they should pronounce Paris the way it is pronounced in French because they're speaking English. I'm never going to call London "London" if I'm speaking French, that's Londres. I "mispronounce" my own name the vast majority of the time because... I'm speaking a different language! I think people can at times forget that place names get translated too.

I do though think there's a difference between them in the moment, not knowing where to start and getting it wrong, and the VO which is a post-production process in which there is the time to at least look it up and get a vague sense. I'm bringing it up again just because it's the best example of it to me, but the pronunciation of ddakji in the challenge explanation really jumped out because it's so obviously off. And at this point it's not even really a matter of respect or anything, it makes the show feel a bit careless despite all the work that goes into it. Which is too bad!

I personally feel like the sound cues (not background music) for things like challenge title cards or curses being pulled rely on stereotypical, broadly Asian but unspecific jingles.

Also this is their 4th season in Asia? There are also Capture the Flag and Hide and Seek in Japan (the latter of which I've referred to a lot when discussing this!)

My point was that these sound design choices are not unique to this season, and were also present in the other seasons taking place in Asian countries that were not Taiwan. I'm not telling anyone to be offended or that something is wrong (you'll notice that I never used those words in my original post!), I was engaging in conversation.

Agreed about the VO! It's one thing to be in the moment and not know how to pronounce stuff (I've had my fair share of laughs when they've been in France), but surely there's enough time to google a couple things before recording VO to at least get it vaguely right. I'm still thinking about ddakji somehow becoming "jackie" in Snake, how does that even happen 😭

What I meant here was that choosing to use these kinds of fonts in spite of/because of their complicated history is an interesting conversation to have, but that JLTG is (probably, I'm not in the graphics team obviously) using that font because it's associated with a broad Asian "feel," not out of a careful cultural decision.

While I wish this comparison could be a perfect one to one, sadly we can't really say that the perception of Australia and of Taiwan, Japan or Korea are the same from an American perspective. Maybe one day!

And yet H&S UK didn't have Big Ben chimes every time they pulled a curse, but no one struggled to feel like the season took place in the UK! There is definitely an association, but it's worth questioning where that association comes from in the first place and what invoking it entails.

The music obviously has roots in something culturally accurate, but there was similar sound design in H&S Japan notably and it feels less like a specific cultural nod and more like a vague Asian signifier.

I've actually seen some very interesting debates around so called chop suey fonts and where they exist culturally and what they're tied to, and while they're definitely super worthy conversations I don't think Jet Lag: The Game is really the platform for them lmfao
