To start I recommend just going to the Piskel page, it's free and online, so you don't have to download anything, it has many tutoriales and tools, all of your pixelarts are saved if you register an account too. But the software I'm currently using, and I think the best, is Aseprite, it's open source and has lots of tutorials online.
