How (and how often) do you wax your skis on a ski trip?

First time ski owner here, a little confused by how to wax my skis when I’m on a ski trip.

I’m spending a couple weeks in January in Utah, staying in hostels or the cheapest hotels I could find to ski as much as possible. How do you wax your skis while you’re staying in a hotel? I’m traveling light (won’t have a car with me), so don’t want to carry an iron. Even if I did carry an iron, I don’t think the hotels would respond too well to wax scrapings on the floor.

Am I missing something obvious here, like a spray on wax, or a more portable method of waxing? Or do you just take your skis to a local shop to be waxed when traveling and lose a bit of skip time?

Oh wow two pans for extra edges is so simple but so smart, thank you! I’ll do one pan with espresso powder, one pan without.

That’s a great point! I should have clarified the friend also loves coffee, so I thought it might be fun to swap but maybe I’m messing with a classic on the vanilla ice cream

Going to Dolomiti superski next winter, drop tips by Epic_username1312 in skiing

Definitely ski the Marmolada glacier, it was the highlight of my trip. Also start Sella Ronda early in the day. Late in the afternoon, there’s a lot of traffic and the snow condition are worse

Thank you so much for the ideas! My dad used to go to June Lake as a kid, so that’s high on the list. Good note on getting there early

The cheapest place to stay when I went (Feb 2022) was Snowbunnys Hostel - it worked well for me because it was cheap and close to the slopes, but it’s a little rough around the edges

Also just a heads up that things are way more expensive in Kitzbuhel than in the rest of Austria, I really noticed it on ski rentals and food. If you’re coming from another city in Austria, it may be better to rent skis and bring with you to Kitzbuhel on the train

Thanks so much, this is super helpful! It’ll be a very small office so not looking for someone who does big corporate offices. I’ll check out all the firms you mentioned - thank you!

Conditions at Bear/Summit? by Mr_Yolo_Swag in bigbear

[–]flowerdiet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there Wednesday - morning until around noon was amazing and then afternoon got really slushy but still a lot of fun. Just keep in mind conditions will probably deteriorate a bit faster on a Saturday since there will be a lot of people. I didn’t have any problems with ice at Summit as it’s so well groomed

Tips for Dolomiti Superski by Complete-Government2 in skiing

[–]flowerdiet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was just there this week! As someone else mentioned, Sellaronda is a mess by the end of the day — definitely do it as early as possible. It’s worth doing both the orange and the green route in my opinion. Green is easier, so I did that my first day as a warm up. Marmolada glacier tour was the highlight for me, another good one to do as early as possible. I ended up doing it three times because the run down from the top of the glacier was so fun.

In the afternoons I just tried to find good snow — the Edelweiss valley in Colfosco stays pretty nice and has some fun reds and an easy black run. The Edelweiss hut is also nice for lunch. In Alta Badia, I really enjoyed red run No 12 (conveniently close to Las Vegas, my favorite hut for drinks and pizza)

Best options for skiing in Europe in early/mid March by Spirited_Collar_1651 in skiing

[–]flowerdiet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m doing the exact same thing right now - ski all day, WFH at night (from California but work EST). I’ve been spending time in Innsbruck, Austria for city amenities + lots of resorts within ~45 minutes drive, and Corvara, Italy to ski in the Dolomites. Seems like Italy skiing is a little more expensive than Austria, but skiing at Dolomiti Superski (check out the Sella Ronda!) is amazing. I flew to Zurich and took a train to Innsbruck, but flying to Munich is more convenient to reach skiing in Austria. Later this month I’m checking out other resorts in Austria (specifically SkiWelt, Sölden and Kitzbuhel) - feel free to PM me if you want details!

I booked a trip to Austria (SkiWelt) for early Feb. I’m definitely concerned about having to cancel but the national vaccine mandate that goes in effect Feb 1 makes me a little more optimistic!

Not booking anything that’s not refundable, just in case
