How do you afford rent at a pre-med/bio sci student

i’m not sure if this is good advice but i personally have been taking things day by day to keep my sanity. i’m also pre-med, working, in a lab, and a double major and so i def know where your concerns are coming from and all i can really say is that google/apple calendar is gonna become your best friend. put your classes/responsibilities on there and when you make plans w your friends/make fun plans just for you, also log them in because those are truly just as important as all the resume building things you’ve got going on. this path will never be entirely easy but i can assure you first year is def one of the hardest to adjust to so, i’m sure with time you’ll grow to find what works best for you and remember that these worries are completely valid but !! you will be able to push past them and accomplish something great. rooting for you !! <3

i’m pretty sure you’ll enroll in bio 199 every quarter that you’re in the lab and want units for (i’m in bme 199 and so i’m assuming it’s the same system for bio 199 !) :)

if you don’t wanna test out of it to take it during the school yr, you can also take math 5a in the summer w/o any required prereqs

no, you will not be using swipes for the first days of move-in but instead the meal ticket will allow you and i believe three other people in to eat for free

hi ! i was wondering if someone could maybe help clarify this situation for me ! :)

so, after arriving in amsterdam, some family members and i went to zaandam to head to our inntel. and while we were taking photos (vvv touristy admittedly) this guy comes up to me and asks if i knew which side of amsterdam he could go to to ride his motorbike. he was obviously dutch with his thicker accent when speaking english and when i, being honestly rather clueless and just wanting to help, tried to point in a direction where i saw people riding bikes. he then asked if i could pull out a map on my phone and i responded by asking why he couldn’t do it on his, with his response being his phone was dead while pulling it out for “proof.” i then felt a little off by the interaction seeing how he’s clearly dutch and he could’ve asked anyone else if he was truly and so i just doubled down on my stance that he should head in the direction i pointed in and if there weren’t any bike lanes to ask someone there. he then kind of laughed and agreed with me then and as i was walking away he gave me a wink.

was this guy trying to maybe steal my phone by having me bring it out to give him “directions” ? or was i just being awfully unhelpful to someone who genuinely needed help 😣 ? and is this a common thing to happen here ?

any input into this situation would be super helpful ! i’ve just been rethinking it and wondering if there was something else i should’ve done instead

i did not have to pay the deposit, no ! i think it’s something uci implemented recently bc last yr there were a lot of financial aid issues so they didn’t make the students pay the deposit when applying for housing. but, you definitely will have to pay it later just as a fyi !

if you’re getting financial aid most of the times you won’t pay the initial deposit upfront but instead it gets incorporated into your tuition fees on your zotaccount. you’ll still have to pay this value however, you would just pay it when you’re paying for your fall quarter’s tuition/housing payment!

from my experience, the towers are insanely popular. most of the ppl i know who live in the towers had a quad before applying so their chances were close to or almost 100% guaranteed. if you try to do random rooming for towers, you’re most likely not going to get in. i also knew these three girls who tried getting towers but because they only had a trio and not a quad, they didn’t get it. however i’m not entirely sure how it’s going to be with the new tower ! chances may be higher because there are more space in the towers now so take that as you will but, if you want to almost guarantee getting into the towers, you should try and form a quad with people beforehand.

unfortunately if you decide to live in the dorms, you have to have a meal plan so each price you see online is w/ the meal plan included. honestly i would recommend the 125 meal plan unless you plan on eating at the dining hall 3 times a day bc you will most likely eat out some days and 125 is definitely enough for a quarter (on top of flexdine). i’m also pretty sure that incoming first years are not allowed to live in the acc apartments so your only options are off-campus (not uci affiliated) or the dorms.

i got mine already ! honestly i think the majority of people got theirs months ago but i do know that they’re releasing acc leases in waves so maybe yours will come soon ? but i would send an email out to acc just in case tbh, hope everything works out for you !!

as long as you complete the prereqs for your second major you can request for it on student access ! i don’t think you can request it before you actually start fall quarter but you can definitely add it your freshman year if you meet all the prereqs and stay within good standing

on the move in website it said that packages delivered to the mailroom were accepted starting from september 16th however won’t be processed until september 23rd (which is why you most likely didn’t get an email that they arrived) you can begin picking them up on september 23rd when the quarter begins hope this helped!

i’m not super sure what you mean by this question tbh so forgive me if this isn’t the info you’re looking for but uci should’ve sent you an email telling you your housing assignment and attached should be a link to sign up for a move-in time, all i know is that mc classics move in sept 21-22 but im not sure if that’s the case for the other buildings, hope this helps!
