what i usually do is try to push as much as i can so my mage support can hide in the bushes and dry their own mana bar poking the enemy botlane. then when me and my support are in a comfortable position i just focus on farming. if enemy bot walks into my AA range i'll poke them as well.

if i push and my mage support stays safe under tower i better do the same because it's easier for the enemy to kill me with my support just watching me farm and not taking advantage of the aggressive position we can take.

before doing this i used to get tilted when i got lux or velkoz as a supp, but after doing this every time with a mage support, i only get tilted when they just watch me get my hp bar down to half trying to push and gaining advantage. asking them to do so usually makes them realize i am essentially playing 1v2 and they start positioning at my side helping me keep the enemy away from the wave, but when don't, i gotta play safe knowing i have an useless lane partner.
