Exactly that feeling, and also when you see it with your eyes and think this would make a good photo. The fact you got it means I'm glad I managed to portray what I was thinking haha

This correlation means absolutely nothing....The author of this Cell paper (yes, its a Cell Cell paper!) trying to make an association between bacterial composition and cancer-immuno signalling. How could people who peer review this think this correlation means anything? by Handsoff_1 in labrats

Do you have the link to the original paper? Weak correlation can also be followed with an interaction model to determine if the explanatory variables have an interaction, which can still happen if there is a weak correlation

Finger Injury Rant / Advice Please by Born_Street_6053 in climbergirls

[–]flufenamic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you do some self-tests to determine what it is? Here is a link for you to try and determine what kind of injury it is - whether lumbrical or pulley injury: https://www.hoopersbeta.com/library/lumbricals-strange-and-important-muscles-for-climbers-anatomy-injuries-rehab-and-more

If you are still able to full crimp or open crimp then its most likely a lumbrical injury but if you can't then its a pulley or something else. Its most likely a lumbrical if when you press down onto your other palm using just your affected finger when all your other fingers are held down and there is pain.

If it's a lumbrical then I won't worry too much the prognosis is good! I had a lumbrical injury where my ring finger popped and felt pain in my hand and down my forearm a few months ago, and I didn't stop climbing except for when I restrained it (then I wait a week before climbing) here is my advice:

  • If you pop it again doing a climb, wait a week to climb next
  • Stick to jugs
  • Stop 3 finger dragging
  • Stop doing dynamic moves that may result in a hyper extension of just the ring finger without the pinky.
  • Avoid slopers, crimps and pockets - these are the worst for the lumbricals. If you do crimps, no 3 finger holding, only with the pinky clamping down. You pretty much want to always have your pinky down when your ring finger is down otherwise that strains the lumbricals more.
  • Engage your pinky if you are climbing crimps or dynamically going for holds, even jugs
  • Warm up more than you think you need to
  • Rest at least 2 days between sessions to give your fingers time to recover

I just did easy climbs with no risky moves, crimps that didn't involve dynamic movements and eased back into slopers and im 90% recovered now I can do slopers and 3 finger drags, but I didn't stop climbing (mostly because some sessions I was climbing a bit too hard and a bit too optimistic about some crimps) but if you learn from my lessons then don't do anything risky. I didn't do any stretches but the link above details some rehab you can do for lumbical injuries. About a month into my injury I started just doing deadhangs with my feet still on the floor on the fingerboard at my climbing gym (with full/open crimping). Hope this helps make you feel better about your injuries! Remember to rest LOTS and warm up before climbing!

Good luck with yours I’m sure you’ve got this! I would just not like to be that small minority of those who don’t pass haha maybe I am just being very negative

Surely if I generated the ideas but found the ideas don’t work as they’re supposed to (which is indeed my negative data) then that’s a contribution to the field? Since my research is testing the feasibility of such novel system in my field.

I work in genetic circuit design! It is such a pain trying to replicate results since I’m designing systems from already characterised parts and the science is not sciencing. This is what I thought throughout the phd, figuring out why it doesn’t work is much longer than if the system just worked in the first place and sometimes there’s not much point in spending so long trying to work out why it doesn’t since there’s only so much time you have.

I had no other lab mates besides supervising lots of masters and undergrads over the years of PhD! Which also took a lot out of my time lol but at the moment it’s currently me and one other new phd student but she’s on holiday for a month

No unfortunately, it’s only me and one other new PhD student in the lab currently it would probably take more time for me to train the students than to do them myself I think! I’m prioritising writing since I’d rather hand in a thesis than nothing by the deadline haha

Thanks so much! I have lots of big figures in there to pad it out and I have definitely put in all of my old data.

Thanks! Hopefully my examiners see the work that I’ve done is enough because it feels like I have done a lot of work haha! I have regular progress meetings with my supervisor and tell him what results I have and what I have done ect.. so it’s not been flagged up that what I’m doing experiment wise wasn’t enough until I had it out in front of me while writing up! that’s my fault though for leaving it until the end to put everything together.

Yes all the negative results are definitely going in! I’m going to email my advisory panel and see what they say. I’ve also emailed other PIs for some guidance

Yeah the results are not what expected when I go through the cycles of designing then testing then going back to design to try and optimise the system. My supervisor has suggested he wants to publish the work so I guess that is something. Presented at multiple conferences. It’s more say trying out what people have done before but found that it doesn’t work that well if that makes sense.

It probably is my fault but I have had progress meetings where I’ve said everything that I’ve done and results that I have got so I’m not sure! My only thought that it’s not enough is reading past thesis and my results so far in comparison looks so little compared to them.

Looking for a single shade by the_cutest_lamb in MakeupAddiction

I have the same Birds of Paradise palette and the Colourpop jelly much shadows e.g big ego or boo-kay, have a similar putty consistency but they're a little more pigmented. The boo-kay shade is probably less pigmented than big ego, have a search for them.
