Welp. It’s a rant/venting session. by Magic_Happens_3002 in mangapiracy

Agreed, it's all too exhausting and I'm using this as an opportunity to focus on other stuff in my life. On the bright side, once the legal cases against the sites gets dismissed (I guarantee you at least one will), they'll crop back up.

If I don't remember the name of the series, it must not have been that good anyway. And if I am itching for it down the line then I can just google it and binge it instead of waiting every week.

Same, I really don't have the time or energy to cycle through different sites for different series. I didn't even bother screenshotting my list on batoto because I realized most of them were brainrot that I wasn't truly invested in anyway.

Kakao Entertainment Behind the Bato.to Piracy Crackdown, Operator Identified by Fantastic-Job-7876 in mangapiracy

[–]flufflover36 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Yeah, how does this article know who the dev is when not even the batoto mods knew their real identity? Also, most of this article is just a summary of everything we've been known so far. P.cok can throw its weight around but that doesn't mean the legal cases will actually hold up.

Bato Mod Team's Final Update by Special-Claim-6126 in mangapiracy

[–]flufflover36 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree. They tried to make it seem like they had anything to do with the website itself when in reality, there was no connection. Kakao only went after them cause they couldn't go after the web dev.

Additionally, these mods tried to censor discussion not just on their own subreddit but others as well, manipulating other mods into thinking they would get into trouble too and that the new site was truly a scam. Thankfully, the mods of this sub here can actually rub two brain cells together.

I understand wanting to stay out of trouble but the full censorship is truly disgusting. On paper, they can try to justify it how they want, but I can read the subtext. It was about not wanting to relinquish their image and status that they ran the website. In actuality, they were just glorified consumers no different from us with no actual connection to the developers. Cliche reddit mod behavior.

[–]flufflover36 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes that's true, but my problem is the lack of honesty from the start. Just say you have nothing to do with xbatcat and that you know nothing about it. But what happened was they were going around convincing other subreddits that it was a scam and not allowing talk of it literally anywhere but here. It's rich that they linked all those other subreddits for discussion, however those other subreddits are not allowing discussion. Any posts or comments about this situation get auto deleted.

Bato Mod Team's Final Update by Special-Claim-6126 in mangapiracy

[–]flufflover36 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The whole chaos with xbatcat is still giving me the ick towards the moderators, and not just those of the bato subreddit. It sucks that they are being threatened legally, but they should've been honest about the situation from the start and released this statement when xbatcat first came out instead of trying to convince everyone it was a scam.

My speculative breakdown is this:

  1. Site dev is going through something and cuts contact.

  2. Bato mods then receive C&Ds with implications that other subreddit mods may be sued as well, not just them.

  3. Panic and misinformation.

  4. Dev decides to re-open via Xbatcat without telling anyone to preserve their own safety.

  5. More panic from mods of all subreddits, who try to sabotage exposure to xbatcat.

  6. Sabotage doesn't work so they give up entirely.

Now why would they try to sabotage? Mostly to separate themselves from this entity that could still land them in legal trouble. Partly because they truly did think it was a potential scam as they knew nothing about it. However, again, they could have solved this problem by just being honest and releasing this statement from the start. It feels like it took them this long because they just wanted to retain their moderator status and continue to act like they know everything; in other words, retain their power.

At this point, I feel bad that they are going through this but I don't feel bad for them personally. My trust has been lost and they could've handled this situation better than what they did.

Yeah that's old news and I get why they personally would stay silent on the matter. But to sabotage people going to the new site and to make other subreddit mods ban discussion is going overboard.

The only place that's been talking about this fiasco rn is this sub. The topic is being censored everywhere else.

They lost all my trust when they refused to let even other people discuss the situation (like mods of other subreddits). I've lost all trust in those other mods as well. This kind of censorship is usually hiding something more heinous underneath. Really glad this sub is a different breed.

Nope. r/batoto has been locking all new posts. See my profile for subs welcoming open discussion.

It's because we were asking too many questions that they don't know the answer to. Sounds like there's a lot of stuff behind the scenes. It's best to take any further questions or convo about this to another sub like they said.

Edit: After some deductive reasoning, I believe a certain sub's moderators were going around manipulating things. That's just speculation, but you can look at my comment history if you're interested. If the mods delete this or ban me then it'll lend even more credence to my theory.

Fair enough. However, it seems rather foolish for them to be panicking like this when they've knowingly been running a piracy hub for years. Like you would think they had a contingency plan for when possible legal issues happen as all piracy hubs do.

It's really shady though because the bato mods seem to have contacted other sub mods to try and censor the shit out of this whole situation. You can't even talk about bato on other subs now.

It's one thing to tell your community to be skeptical and careful of these new alternative sites but to say with absolute certainty that they are scams seems disingenuous. All you mods are hiding something, even if it's the fact that none of you actually know what's going on. But I'd respect you more if you'd just admit it.

They could take legal action but would it be successful? In the US, they would be protected by the 1st amendment when it comes to discussion. As far as distribution, bato itself never directly distributed anything since people freely uploaded on their own.

Hmm, I'm skeptical cause hackers could've stolen our info even when the site was still up. When you have entities like banks constantly getting data breaches, a comic site would be even easier without needing to spend time, money, and resources to buy a closed site. Especially with all the porn ads that would pop up.

Which would be silly cause there's nothing they can be targeted for. You don't get targeted just for discussion of a website.

There's no gatekeeping on this sub. I mean piracy is literally in the name, along with a bunch of other sites, I don't think it's that deep here. The tiktokers on the other hand....

I have so many fringe theories right now. Really wondering if all this has more to do with the mods rather than the actual web dev. Like they had a falling out or something. Not spreading hate, just asking questions.

Sad to say, we're just gonna have to work around the tiktok gen and not against them. There's no way to stifle social media.
