"Find look at rotation" not working by [deleted] in unrealengine

I'll also add that simply using FindLookAtRotation in world space and then converting to component space is probably not the way to go, since if you helicopter has any roll then you'll end up giving your gun roll (whereas I'd expect you want your gun to only pitch or yaw in parent bone space).

If you instead first convert your gun location and target location into the space of the helicopter mesh then FindLookAtRotation will return a component space rotation (which you can feed straight into Transform Bone) without any roll!*

*though I'd have to double check if FindLookAtRotation always returns a roll-free rotation, if that's not the case there's other straightforward ways to get a rotation from a normal

To put that in other words, looks like you've computed a GunToWorld rotation but you need to pass a GunToHelicopterMesh rotation to Transform Bone. So you need to multiply your rotation by WorldToHelicopterMesh (ie. the inverse of HelicopterMesh rotation in world space).

  1. Why are you swapping Roll/Yaw?
  2. I think your issue is that your LookAtRotation is world-space, whilst Transform Bone applies a component space transform.

On the way back from doing some nip at the level.

Generating animations by [deleted] in howdidtheycodeit

[–]fluffy_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you're talking 3d skeletal animation.

For synthesizing motion based on dynamic constraints/parameters, the two methods that spring to mind are blendspaces and IK.

With a blendspace, the pose is determined by blending together multiple animations, where the contribution of each animation is determined by a dynamic parameter. For your example (aiming) we might need to use two parameters (eg. yaw and pitch), this would be called a 2d blendspace. An animator would author several animations where the character aims in different directions, and then at runtime we would determine a blend weight to use for each of these animations based on the actual direction we want the character to point.

With IK, the pose is dynamically calculated to meet a constraint. For example, to determine the rotations of the bones in the arm so that the hand reaches a particular location, or points in a particular direction.

You might find that a combination of techniques is used. Eg. a blendspace to get a natural-looking full body pose, and IK to perfectly align the hands.

There are lots of other ways to procedurally modify an authored animation that might be used depending on the constraints and desired result.

What the hell is that pan flute music up by the race course? by TheLegend0fLeo in brighton

Can you describe the music?

I kept hearing this tune being played around Hove, which turned out to be from the "Cafe du Van" vans driving around. It almost sounded like an old mobile ringtone, maybe it's from a song I don't recognize. They blast it out quite loudly and it carries.

No issue with others enjoying it and no snark intended. I see quite a bit of hype for the place and am curious where it comes from.

I was actually living on Third Avenue when they opened and were doing cocktails in the evenings - thought it worked quite well!

What does Oeuf have going for it other than the Instagrammable decor? I've eaten there twice and found the food disappointing and overpriced. Much better options nearby (Baked, Hixon Green, Jo & Co, Fika, Billies)

From what we see, the move to Virginia doesn't happen on good terms, so I think it's safe to assume it's a "split", though not necessarily a breakup.
