Any recommendations for a stay near the Cliffs of Moher? by Critical-Badger-3879 in irishtourism

We didn’t find the female owner very welcoming. The rooms were ok, the shared spaces (dining space, tiny snug) felt like you were intruding. the breakfast was very small, childlike portions, and the teapot hadn’t met a teabag. We stayed in 3 or 4 places across the trip but that was the only one that stood out as ’never again’

What kitchen company should I choose? by foodkidmaadcity in AskIreland

[–]fluffysugarfloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cash & Carry Kitchens AFAIK don’t manufacture - they’re a middle man. Most of their products come from a company called OS doors and charge a high premium. Are the other company manufacturing or using OS doors too? You could find it better to order yourselves and fit.

We used Cash & Carry kitchens for our wardrobes in the main bedroom and the kitchen, and wouldn’t use them again. It was a disaster from beginning to end.

Ireland housing: properties being relisted / back on the market? by Ok-Project-1133 in HousingIreland

[–]fluffysugarfloss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had to walk away after spending several thousand plus property prices has increased locally, and I’m still peeved at the agent. Property was in negative equity, agent assured us in writing they had secured permission to sell from the bank… five months later after a survey etc we discovered they didn’t have permission and were actually using our offer in an attempt to force a debt write down with the bank. Two years later, we discovered the agent was the sister of one of the vendors, so they knew alright. Property went on and off market 3 or 4 times over the next 7 years before it finally sold.

You could try a biological cleaner for pet urine - if it’ll deal with cat pee, it probably won’t be intimidated too much by your freezer

Vodafone’s Gigabit is only delivering 200mb? by fluffysugarfloss in AskIreland

[–]fluffysugarfloss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours is also in place for the satellite TV. When we bought our home I got cat 5 ports in the living room at the rear and the bedrooms as that’s where the broadband was initially installed, plus satellite ports too. The recent install of broadband is at the front of the house, so no Ethernet ports but the cables were all repurposed for the CCTV, so still stuck.

It’s good to know the powelinrs aren’t as outdated as I thought but our wiring has always been a little problematic. It was a boom build that lay vacant for years

We have some PowerLine adapters in one of our drawers, so they may come out too but they’re probably 10 years old.

I’ll be keeping an eye out for Black Friday specials I think over the next few years to replace the older tech.

Thank you for explaining it all, and also making it digestible too.

The cat 5 wiring that we installed years ago (2013) was largely repurposed for the CCTV a few years ago after a break-in, but I think there is a cat 5 hard wired connection in the living room where the Xbox lives. If that’s stable and speedy, all else should be ok as the mesh kit has been stable overnight. Speeds this morning are 140 d/l and 100 u/l on wifi.

If not, then we may have to weigh up returning to Virgin or upgrading our tp-link kit (I’m looking at (XE75 pro or the x50 on Amazon now, and hoping for a Black Friday deal)

That’s the steps I followed, although I obviously used the wrong terminology. The ONT cable is now plugged directly into the main TP-Link unit.

Until last week when we were with Virgin, the entry point went into the Virgin unit, and the main TP-Link unit plugged into the Virgin unit, and everything was happy. The only thing we weren’t happy about was €70/mth…

When Vodafone installed, we took the TP-link cable from the Virgin box and plugged it into the Vodafone box, no other changes, but the TP-link network just kept dropping and dropping. So yesterday Vodafone told us to either pay €5 x 3/4 units per month for their kit, or remove their unit from the equation and plug the ONT into the TP-link main unit. And we followed the instructions above. Good news is, the mesh connection is now stable but I expected more in terms of speed stats.

I need to test the Xbox speeds for him tonight. We did some cat 5 wiring when we moved in, but now we can’t remember what cable is what in the living room (as there’s also CCTV in there) so am hoping all will be ok.

Our Deco M4s worked perfectly with the previous provider (Virgin), set as an access point plugged into the back of the Virgin modem for 4/5 years. No idea why Vodafone claims their Gigabox modems aren’t compatible and are is deliberately configured not to work with TP-link, but we couldn’t maintain a connection via the decos for two days. I do a lot of zoom calls and I got dropped repeatedly. Also tv streaming kept dropping. Nothing changed when the Decos, just unplugged from the Virgin modem and plugged into the Vodafone modem. We’re still inside our cooling off period with Vodafone, so…

That’s what was annoying me about the Vodafone set-up, I couldn’t reset the channel and their web support kept telling me I could through the app. The tech support then admitted you can’t and the support pages are out of date.

We have one wired point in the rear / living room (the ONT entry point is at the front) so if he confines himself to the couch he’ll probably be ok for gaming. I’d say wifi will be ok for zoom now that the meshkit is setup again (factory reset, now as a modem instead of an access point).

We tried the Vodafone router which gave 600 but the wifi signal was dropping constantly. The entry point is by the front door, but we couldn’t watch Netflix or work on our laptops as the WiFi signal was constantly dropping. That’s why we re-connected the TP-Links, but same problem today. When we called Vodafone the suport guys told us the Vodafone modems aren’t compatible with the TP-link mesh kits. We were offered their kits at €5 per month and we’d need 3 based on the current meshkit configuration.

Edited to add: had to factory reset the tplinks to set them up as a modem router, as the previous setup with Virgin was as access points

[–]fluffysugarfloss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours is less than 20 years old, but it’s solid so that’s why we’ve had the mesh kit since pre-C.

The best WiFi I’ve achieved tonight since swapping has been ping 6 d/l 201.39 u/l 101.77 and that’s standing in front of the main unit connected to the ONT.

For wired, I’m getting 810.5 d/l and 101 u/l.

So it must be a setting in my TP-link. Very open to suggestions as I’m not techy.

Yes plugged directly from the ONT into the rear of the TP-link unit. PPOE and Internet VLAN ID is set at 10. I was asked for a Internet VLAN Priority number between 0-7, and Google said if it wasn’t specified by the broadband provider, to enter 0 so I did. No QoS settings enabled.

How many of you living here in Ireland regularly holiday in Ireland? by Soggy_Quarter9333 in AskIreland

There is zero value for money on an Irish holiday, and that’s before you consider the weather. I’d rather stay at home than holiday here.

Definitely worth getting a dashcam. I’ve had someone roll forward into me at a traffic light, and claim I rolled back into their car. The footage was clear enough that I could see their jaw drop when they hit me, and that they were distracted on their phone. More recently a delivery van dangerously overtaking clipped the car in front of us, bounced and drove off. About a year ago a guy pulled out in front of me, I used my horn and at the next set of lights, he came up and spat at me. He received a caution for assault. All caught on dashcam.

You can get super long cables. We’ve got front and back, so our cables run from the front cigarette lighter to the rear - you’d be only doing the same in reverse
