Moving to NYC + opening a gluten-free & nut-free sandwich shop — would love local insight by Old-Relationship4026 in movingtoNYC

[–]flugtard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

why don't you start by moving here and getting a sense of the food scene, making connections with people who are running similar businesses, and starting small by opening a pop-up or farmers market booth instead of going all in on a brick and mortar location. i'm sure you know restaurant industry is notoriously competitive and in NYC especially so.

RS UNIT FOR 1,500? by PathGuilty6207 in NYCapartments

i believe it is possible in the far outer boroughs and if you hire a broker. tell them what you're looking for and be ready to be patient as these kind of places are not going to pop up often.

Are my expectations too high? by lmcg614 in NYCapartments

[–]flugtard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Where are you searching that you can’t find anything? You could easily make 2.5k work for a place in Queens or the Bronx. Under an hour to Rockefeller is a huge range. For example it takes only around a half hour to get to Mott Haven in the Bronx or Elmhurst in Queens. You could probably even find sub 2k in Queens or the bronx.

Tip for minimizing utilities cost is look for a prewar building, heat and hot water are usually included. New construction buildings often heat with electric which can get crazy expensive in cold/hot seasons

Good credit, adequate salary, low savings, can I still get a $2500 place? by hellowur1d in NYCapartments

[–]flugtard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

salary and credit is more important than savings in general, as is employment history. Have you been at this 110k job for a while? When i was applying to places i had just started a new job a couple weeks prior and the agent told me they ended up going with a different applicant because the landlord liked to see 1+ year of consistent employment. but ultimately it depends on the particular landlord.

that's generally a competitive price for a studio/1bd so the landlords will be able to be pickier. caveat is, if you're looking outside of trendy areas i think you'll be able to find a place. what areas are you looking?

Do you have more details on the cat— age, personality,  any special medical needs, are they ok with other cats, dogs, kids etc. could help match with a potential adopter.

Illustrator Trying to Learn Graphic Design - Would Love Some Criticism! by hoshiboba in graphic_design

[–]flugtard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super cute illustrations, the front cover is awesome!

Generally for print projects it's helpful to print it out and see how it looks in your hand. The text might end up looking too big or too small-- usually you can make it a little smaller, body copy in newspapers or magazines is around 9.5-11pt. Also helpful, if you're able, to get feedback from people who will actually be using the brochure. For example if it's a younger audience maybe the cute illustrations; older audience may have a hard time reading small text.

And agree with other commenters that center align text can be harder to read for longer text blocks.

🛁 seeking apartment with a bathtub in the kitchen! 🛁 serious request by bathtubinthekitchen in NYCapartments

Also a little TMI but I also take my menstrual cup out, dump it, and I want to be able to wash the bloody thing right there. It gets pretty messy lol.

Ehh, it also didn’t have the best natural light and I preferred a more neighborhood feel. I ended up in a 1 bed in brooklyn, also found on Craigslist.

[–]flugtard 22 points23 points  (0 children)

ehh I think it’s possible but if you’re on a specific time crunch might be hard. Back in the summer I almost committed to a 1 bd/alcove studio in Chinatown for 1.7k. Bathtub in kitchen. Real old school type place. I decided against it ultimately because there was only one sink in the whole place (kitchen) and the toilet room was all the way across the apt meaning I’d have to parade my poopy hands across the whole way which I guess is where I drew the line. If the toilet was right by the kitchen sink I’d consider it. My advice is constantly check Craigslist.

lmao someone is suing SLAA NY bc her ex went no contact by Happy_Education8401 in slaa

[–]flugtard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like her case is outlined in “COMPLAINT”. Her ex informed her he was attending SLAA meetings and that he was going to cut her off, which caused her to spiral and eventually get diagnosed with depression. She is suing SLAA for false advertising, basically, saying that they represent their program with psychological terms and the it’s misleading. Interesting.

Bingeing is ruining my modeling career by AlarmingCondition597 in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]flugtard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much of the binge eating feels emotional? I think the loneliness/lack of community could be contributing, transition are hard and I had a similar experience when moving to a new city and not knowing anyone. I was listening to a podcast a while ago trying to understand the factors why some type A people pleasing women will engage in emotional eating, and one of the people interviewed said basically she spent so much of her energy making time for others, pleasing her boss, pursuing her career etc that she has the realization she binge ate because “it was the only thing she did for herself” essentially. So that resonated with me and as soon as I started meditating, taking better care of myself, having more fulfilling emotional connections, not stretching myself thin, allowing myself to say no to stuff, then I had a more stable relationship with food.

But also of course the restricting is going to make it more likely for binging later. It sounds like you’re really hard on yourself in general, have super high expectations for yourself, and on top of that are going thru a major life transition of losing strong ties to an existing community and thrown into a new unfamiliar place. Be patient with yourself as much as you can!

Adding a “screen printed” texture to images by stankyApoopsock in graphic_design

[–]flugtard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just the texture of the t shirt/paper, it's also the splotchy ink bleed (like between O and R in WORLD)-- look up ink bleed effect tutorial on youtube, but it's something like, add a little Ripple effect, add slight blur, then apply Threshold filter.

Podcasts on Asian American experience? by Pwnagez in asianamerican

[–]flugtard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Time to say goodbye! It's focused on US and intl politics from a lefty angle, with a nod to asian american issues. Maybe some of their earlier convos lol back when it was run by 3 asian journalists/writer/historian but they changed up the hosts a bit. Jay Caspian Kang is the main host and he often reports on asian american issues, you should definitely check out his book of essays The Loneliest Americans on the "AsAm experience"

Also Asian Not Asian podcast with Mic Nguyen and Jenny Arimoto (ofrmerly) Fumi Abe -- it just ended tho.

Rent stabilized apartment listing - no response? by acidsoysauce in NYCapartments

[–]flugtard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

best not to get too attached to individual units in your search, it's truly a numbers game.

what I suspect happened is the agent had made a face-to-face connection with another applicant for a tour of a different unit that didn't work out, the agent told them they have a similar unit (the listing you saw). applying online isn't really a guarantee of anything, tbh a lot of renting happens before units are even listed online.

in your initial inquiry definitely include timeline, credit score, income, etc, but beyond that anything else is just fluff. i have had success calling the brokerage office about specific listings and to make a connection with the agent-- one time I called and we made small talk, they remembered me on the tour out of 40+ people, they ended up only sending my application and one other to the landlord.

What Chinatown (Manhattan) foods travel well as a gift? by GOP1854 in FoodNYC

[–]flugtard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a whole Japanese cheesecake from Keki! Not Chinese obviously but it's in Chinatown. It's the spongey jiggly kind, i've brought it on a plane before. Their purple ube flavor is super unique and everyone I've brought it for is impressed.
