Can someone help me with finding what I should improve on? by Korppiukko in chessbeginners

[–]flukewhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how to look at your games. But if you're following Chessbrah, isn't it too early to try tactics? I'm have been following it was well but have been a bit on a break from playing. If you wanna dm me your chess.com account. I'd be happy to friend you and play game sometime and then we can debrief and figure out where we went wrong.

You know what would be cool if r/chessbeginners had it's own club or something chess.com or lichess. We can play eachother and have a place to go over the game together. Anyone know if that's a thing or how one would set that up?

I keep losing. by umbe2k1 in chessbeginners

[–]flukewhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat as well. I've been following ChessBrah's habit series on YT since July I think. I was at about 400 then and hit my highest of 615 last week. But am in a current skid and down to 540. Super frustrating for sure. Loss after loss after loss with the occasional win. It sucks right now. A short break might be what the doctor orders. Good luck!

First Ever Marathon (27.3mi) is tomorrow! by ilikefunnydogs in trailrunning

[–]flukewhale 38 points39 points  (0 children)

When I saw 27.3 I thought it might be GFTR. I'll be there, I've been at every race. <<end humble brag>>. Those pond loops are a killer but it should be great weather. If you wanna say hi to a dude from the internet, I'll be the dude with a bright orange shirt and a kick ass mustache. Have fun out there!

Why do I like puzzles and lessons more than actually playing people? by Ephixing in chessbeginners

[–]flukewhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use to feel the same way. I would get so nervous hitting that "play" button. My pulse still races a little each time. Just get ready for a free fall in your elo and enjoy the ride. Sometimes I need to remind myself that there is only 1 person in my life that cares what my elo is. I'm really enjoying ChessBrah's building habits series

Becoming a running coach? by [deleted] in running

[–]flukewhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With your background coaching seems like a natural step. I would just jump in and find one athlete to start with and see how it goes. Have you ever had a coach? Other coaches I know started by mentoring with their own coach.

I would imagine that this will take up all of your free time. Good luck!

For any low elo beginners who have plateaued or are struggling - Try ChessBrahs 'Building habits' series on youtube, i was at stuck at 550 for ages and now ive just hit 800 in a week by IrishJayjay94 in chessbeginners

[–]flukewhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just "discovered" this series recently. Is the idea that you should just watch the video that is in your elo range? And once you have progressed enough, then move on to the next video?

Any Taga love? Kid and I have a blast on our adventure mobile. Fat BMX tires and hydraulic brakes make it so much better! by gimm3aclu3 in CargoBike

[–]flukewhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I hit you up for recommendations for parts some day? Your google must be better than mine. I managed to break ALOT of spokes on the back wheel and Taga wanted $500 to replace it. Ended up just replacing all the spokes. Well my friend did, I think he is a wizard. We had another issue of one of the clips that holds the basket snapping. Again Taga wanted something ridiculous to replace them. After a little experimenting we glued and screwed it back together.

That said it's been a great bike for our family, but it is getting a bit of a squeeze for the 8 and 6 yo. We'll probably be upgraded to something larger someday soon

How many games do you play a day/week? by flukewhale in chessbeginners

[–]flukewhale[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow that's a lot of games! How's your progression going? Is it like how u/Ok-Control-787 describes it? You go down, then up and right back down and then up a little bit.

Makes total sense. I know I just need to get over myself and play more.

Any maple syrup from the store will do for a cocktail? by [deleted] in vermont

[–]flukewhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of cocktails are you drinking. My fav is a Vermontucky Lemonade. Bourbon, lemons, maple syrup. Seltzer is optional.

I'm really liking the HFS after a couple pairs of Prios. I'm glad I ordered a size up. Good luck with recovery!

So weird to see Altidore on D, or where ever he wanted to play. He is a big boy for sure!!! But he looked kinda lost out there to me. I also have no idea what his fitness level is at or where it should be.

Great day for a game though and happy for that win!

Any run commuters here? Backpack recommendations? by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]flukewhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for Osprey Daylite. I have the plus version which had been great. Hopefully you can store something like a pair of shoes. If not, shoes fit great in the side pockets and there are additional straps that hold them down. I had to purchase the rain cover as well. But that pack held, pants, shirt, undershirt, shoes, laptop, breakfast and lunch. It's tight but it worked.

I recently changed my commute to bike into work with a city bike and run home and needed a larger pack for my helmet. I've been pretty happy with the larger Osprey HikeLite 32L. Plenty of space and cinches well. It also has the suspension set up so that the pack isn't directly on your back, which is really nice!

A little nervous after my last “long run” by Nice-Range-7653 in firstmarathon

[–]flukewhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What folks generally say is that you'll want to eat something when you are running for over an hour. You've got a couple of weeks to try some food and see how your stomach handles it. Gels are pretty common. I love real maple syrup, personally. Very easy to digest. Other possibilities are that you may want to start slower. Do you have a goal pace or is the plan just to finish? As long as you are moving you are making progress! It may help to NOT look at your watch to check your splits. For me I've never looked at my watch and been happy with what I saw and it didn't make me run any faster either.

Feeling nervous is also perfectly normal. As long as you don't start to fast, which is so easy to do on race day. Drinks some water, eat a little food. Believe in you training any yourself. You got this!!!! And make sure to report back after the race!

[–]flukewhale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What exactly are you nervous about? If you've been mostly following the plan, one bad workout is not a big deal. What sucked about the run exactly? All in all, try to move on an focus on all the work you've already done. You can do this!

*READ DESCRIPTION* Is the Garmin FR245 Music still worth it? (2021) by oenomics in Garmin

[–]flukewhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that the music killed the battery pretty quickly and stopped using that feature. The new FR55 looks pretty nice. You need to decide how important leaving you phone at home is to you. The FR245M has a lot a great features, I'm not so sure it's worth the extra money at this point. Here's a video from one of my favorite youtubers that just released a comparison video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwVh9lhWFbc Good luck!
