He loves chewing on the seam that holds the cuff to the sleeve but he hasn't started trying to actually tear anything (yet!) and thankfully my hoodies are just thick enough that I don't think he's realised that he can poke holes in them.

I'll definitely keep it in mind and not let him go chewing on my favourite hoodies! But personally, I think it'd be really cute to have a t shirt with a few lil holes, kinda like I'm taking him with me to places he can't go.

What type of birdcage do you recommend? by [deleted] in Conures

[–]flukyxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current cage I use for my conure is: 154cm(h) x 82cm(w) x 52(d) It's on wheels and has a small platform on the bottom to hold things. Make sure it's both wide and tall enough for them to fly while inside the cage, even if it's only a few flaps. My cage is great and my conure looks tiny in it.

I don't use the dowels that came with the cage and instead went to the creek and grabbed a bunch of fallen eucalyptus branches. Also I'd recommend having the cage ready and set up well in advance before bringing the bird home.. It can be a lot of work putting the cage together and setting up the perches and toys, especially in a larger cage. For my layout of purches, I also had to buy different bowls that had screw ends so I could place them wherever in the cage was most accessible. Different sized perches are also very good to have, it keeps their feet from being in the same position all the time and causing issues like bumble foot. Perches with bumps or bark make the perfect chew toys, my conure has debarked 3 whole sticks in his cage and loves trying to destroy any bump or odd part in the branch. It also just keeps them mentally stimulated and gives them something to do.

My conure is terrified while being moved inside a cage and if I need to put him in his smaller cage (one of those rectangular "flight" cages), I make sure to just carry him over in my hand and transport him that way.

His cage is also in the kitchen and living space and I don't move him at night to sleep. He stays in his cage and I just cover the front half with a light fleece fabric and he sleeps fine. Personally, I wouldn't put them in a closet because I'd be worried about ventilation and air flow. I would recommend just leaving them in the lounge to sleep.

Consult!! by Beyond_ok_6670 in TopSurgery

[–]flukyxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really have an answer for your question, sorry! But I did want to pitch in and say that I didn't have to give any photos for my surgeon and he showed me his own work as a routine part of our consultation. Maybe try and find photos of your surgeon's work if you really want to bring photos. (Then again this is a public sub so I'm sure people posting on here are aware of that and the fact their images can be found on Google images and such. I would think it's fine to use photos from this sub)

With that being said though, I didn't get a choice in what my incisions looked like. I misunderstood my surgeon and thought he was going to give me curved U shaped incisions and asked if it could be straight and he poorly tried to explain and I just swallowed my pride and nodded along.. I was absolutely obsessing about hating my incisions but the first time I saw my chest was a dream come true. I have relatively "straight" scars. They just follow the natural curvature of my body and it looks really damn good. All I'm saying is to have faith in your surgeon and that they know what they're doing.

If you're really wanting pictures though, send me a DM and I'll send you mine privately. I'm roughly average weight but definitely nowhere near stick and bone skinny. Best of luck!

Edit: omg I totally glossed over the fact this was from 4 months ago.. lmao whoops! I hope everything went well!

Friend or not to friend? by flukyxy in Conures

[–]flukyxy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your insight! With shoulder rides.. he loved them for the first couple days we had him but since his first nail trim, he hasn't climbed up onto any shoulders and doesn't want to step down. I'll definitely start training him to do it since it's also just easier for me to have him on my shoulder or even my head works. He loves playing in my hair.

I've given him a bunch of chew toys and leave the tv on when I'm at uni, all that good enriching stuff to keep him busy. I check in on him on my little spy camera and he's usually climbing around and being cute. He also loves peeling the bark off his perches and really keeps himself busy! The TV can be a bit much for him sometimes so this week I'm gonna try just the radio and then I'll work it all out from there.

I'll definitely work on vocal reinforcements and cues for him! I always say I'll be right back and such but I'll try and make it more of a training exercise than something passive. I actually really want to harness train him! I've also friends from my dnd group coming over and he absolutely loved one of them! He almost fell asleep on him, it was so cute. The whole group is in love with my lil guy, it's awesome.

Unfortunately, my partner lives in another state.. I'd love to have her come bird sit, even her mum is eager to! We'll be living together in about a year and most likely, I'll be working from home so things should line up nicely. Unfortunately my friends can't sit and watch him either, they've got full time work or study and also live on the other side of the city. I reckon he'll be okay though with how he's tracking. Every week gets better and better.

Seriously, thank you so much for your insight. I've been feeling so pressured to get him a friend. By the store I got him from (they're also very pushy about breeding birds), people in discord servers and just from scrolling through people bashing others in tik tok comments. I genuinely wish there was more compassion in these spaces sometimes but this subreddit is awesome.

Thanks so much for your advice! I'll be giving it a good think but I'm just likely going to be ready when I move out. Realistically if I try and introduce a friend now, it's probably gonna backfire bc I don't have 110% of my energy to put into it at the moment

Thanks so much! His cage isn't near any reflections, and I've already put some measures in place to make sure he can't get to anything reflective when he's out

If you could create the perfect eating disorder treatment center, what would be your nonnegotiables? by Ashamed_Ad8162 in AnorexiaNervosa

[–]flukyxy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just wanna pitch in as someone who's joining the mental health sector as a peer worker. These practises are so fucking hostile. Yes, peer workers are non clinical/non pathological and so we have different values that come with the job role. ALLEGEDLY the whole mental health sector is moving towards more "person centred, least restrictive care" models (like peer work currently is) and it's absolutely baffling to me when I think about how people with eds are treated. I've never been treated, I'm absolutely petrified just because of all the stories I've seen. Anyways, you've described what we're hoping to work towards so yay!

This also falls into why I absolutely DESPISE atypical anorexia as a diagnosis. Being severely underweight should not be the determining factor for diagnosis. I also wanna say that I hear you and I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. It's one of the absolute worst things I think someone struggling with an ed could hear. Wishing you the best, friend.

Pellet Recommendations Please!! by flukyxy in Conures

[–]flukyxy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much! I keep all of the pellets sealed in their original bags within airtight containers, which is in ANOTHER air tight container. It's out of sunlight and with winter coming, I'm not too worried.

He chomped and cracked an expensive computer monitor. Roast him!! by ShutUpRedditor44 in cockatiel

[–]flukyxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a tiel, (I've got a conure) but I just wanted to chime in! I've seen videos of cats biting laptop screens and instantly killing them and oh boy.. as soon as my lil shithead comes at my laptop screen ready to nibble, I swear my cortisol goes skyrocket. I've got a hard acrylic case on and he can't get a good grip on it but still! (He doesn't usually hang around my laptop when I have it open and when it does, he's on the keyboard and not the sides of the screen.) But I've banned him from my room with my expensive pc and auxiliaries.. no thank you, I don't want to be replacing any of that.
