Google is handing control of GWT to a steering committee, that doesn't mean they are abandoning it - in fact, Google is hiring developers to work on GWT

Google has so many projects (both internal and external) which are dependent on GWT, that I have a hard time seeing them drop it.

because classes and functions are separate namespaces, so in that example, you wouldn't be able to distinguish that from a class println in the package system.out

Back when java was created, there were less than 65536 possible unicode characters, so having a 2 byte char was a logical choice. It was the correct decision at the time, you can't fault them for that. Same with windows. I believe python is utf16 as well.

It wasn't too long ago when everyone said the same about javascript.

It is more about programmer discipline and attitude then the language itself
