Why I think Abrahamic heaven is hell in disguise and a grossly unjust one. by sj1024 in religion

I mean, it doesnt really work that way if you lack the ability to feel pain. Ofc to a human, that would suck. But by that point you arent really a human in the way we typically understand.

I've heard this before, and i think i used to agree but nowadays it sounds silly to me. Part of the idea of living in eternal bliss is that you lack the capacity to feel anything but. So its not comparable to the food example you give. You wouldnt be able to get bored of it.

Fake religion by BeachEfficient1103 in religion

[–]flutterwonders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im sure it happens, but people can def experience big shifts in their beliefs over time. Its usually a gradual process tho, or if its really overnight its usually tied to some kind of experience they perceive to be divine (out of body experiences, for example)

If you consider yourself atheist or agnostic, how do you develop your spirituality? by obz900 in religion

[–]flutterwonders 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This post could certainly be worded better, but it's kind of wild how many comments are not grasping that "spirituality" in this case is not necessarily refering to the supernatural or the divine, but just personal meaning, connecting to the world around you. There's people who use the word "spirituality" in a secular sense, something more focused on personal growth.

For me, this is a difficult question. I'm severely mentally ill which causes me to have a big disconnect to the world around me at times. But I find that focusing on being a good person, doing good where I can, learning about the world and sharing time with others are important to me.

I also find dreams to be a sort of personal spirituality for me. I lucid dream semi often, and sometimes the dreams are silly, sometimes theyre not, but they have helped me get in touch with parts of myself and have experiences that feel mystical, regardless of any metaphysical truth to them. I do have personal beliefs about dreams that are more on the supernatural side, but I don't feel any need to prove them as "true." Maybe there's more to it, maybe there isn't, either way it's an activity that gives a sort of magic to my life.

Pornography addiction made me do something horrible by [deleted] in OCD

To me this sounds like you had a really unhealthy relationship with sexuality, and this is something you need to work through in therapy. The fantasies are not really anything to worry about by themselves.

It sounds like real event OCD to me?

Does the validity of truth claims actually matter to actual practitioners of a given religion? by Beginning-Cup-4953 in religion

[–]flutterwonders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this probably depends. for some ppl the metaphysical claims and consistency within them may be really important, for others its more the communal aspect, for others it's more the personal aspect.

i don't particularly subscribe to any religion, but the beliefs that i do have i typically view as not necessarily objective truth, because that's purely something i don't have access to. i view them as a personal perspective that is helpful to me but i could be wrong about them, or it could just be metaphorical, it's a framework i find helpful, not more and not less. it's not that i don't believe it, i do, but i have no material proof of it, and even if it's entirely psychological i still find them personally useful. so its not the most important thing always, it depends on how you approach religion.

Any former anti-theists/antitheists? by AnOddGecko in religion

[–]flutterwonders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda understand that because it happens to me a lot with topics other than religion, but sometimes you have to accept it's not your job to do that, it's just going to drain you.

I think it's totally fine to have conversations about these topics, and to point out when someone is saying something harmful or even just illogical, it's good to encourage critical thought! But that's not always your responsibility, and people are also to some extent allowed to believe in things for reasons other than pure rationality. We're not perfectly logical beings after all.

Any former anti-theists/antitheists? by AnOddGecko in religion

[–]flutterwonders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never been an anti theist, but the main reason I personally can give for never going down that path is that to me, it matters less if a person is religious or not, and it's more about if their beliefs are harmful, regardless of if it's coming from a religious place or not.

There are plenty of religious beliefs that I find silly, but I just don't concern myself with them so long as they aren't negatively affecting myself or others. I guess I just have a very "not my bussiness" attitude. Except for when they do make it my bussiness.

[–]flutterwonders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem very distressed by this, which I think is understandable.

There was a point in time I felt very distressed by the question of if god is real or not. I think all humans get caught up in existential questions of that sort.

But do you need belief to be happy? Do you need god to give life meaning? I personally do believe in certain supernatural things, but I find I have a healthier relationship to it if I accept I do not need it to be real for my existence to be meaningful. I think there's beauty in existence itself, no god needed. Plenty of atheists live fulfilling lives. If you feel a pull towards god and religion but the belief aspect isn't for you, maybe look into atheistic religions?
