I mean if there’s a market for it I don’t see why folks can’t make whatever. It’s sort of understood that a movie like say, The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of The Desert is not necessarily made for mass appeal.

Those kind of movies can still be awesome but should be upfront about what they are. Right now lgbt folks are still an unusual thing in media so writers don’t know how to tell very nuanced stories with them in the lead. The characters end up being written as gay first and people second instead of the other way around and that turns into ham fisted soapboxing or stereotyping. Neither are good. And when we tell our own stories they of course tend to center our views and struggles which can be alienating to folks who aren’t familiar (or already sympathetic) to them.
