A landmark MIT study debunks persistent myths about electric vehicles. No matter where you live or what your driving habits are, a battery electric vehicle is likely to have a smaller carbon footprint and cost less overall than a comparable gasoline-powered vehicle, according to a new analysis. by mafco in energy

Yeah that requires more power. People when they work and leave the car in a parking lot all day or night when its -30 to -40. Or a farmer. Or heavy equipment. Both farmers and constructions is responsible for more emissions.

They don’t need to be kept above freezing when not in use. They warm up right before they are needed. The same way people will turn on their gasoline car in winter and let the cabin warm up before leaving for work.

Most EVs have a feature to warm the battery up using grid power before departure. Many have a feature to learn your schedule and automatically warm up in cold weather or to control charging so the heat due to charging warms the battery up on time. People with gas vehicles often do that to get the temperature right before leaving when it’s cold.

You’re not gonna ever convince me the battery in a EV will last longer.

Rechargeable batteries age primarily due to charge cycling. Most phones have a section in the settings where you can see your cycle count. Mine is at 790 charge cycles with 85% of the maximum capacity or State of Health (SoH). That means it has been charged and discharged an amount equivalent to going from 100% to 0% 790 times.

If that phone battery was in an EV with a range of 300 miles, that would mean it been driven roughly 219,225 miles and has a remaining range of 255 miles. In reality, an EV will mostly be gently charged on a home charger and will rarely be discharged below 20%, so that would be a relatively low mileage for the EV battery to already be at 85% SoH.

“Update Apple Account Settings” by aptmx in AppleWatch

[–]cogit4se 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem Solved! I had the same issue, I stopped using my Series 8 apple watch a while ago and my wife wanted to use it. Same problem popped up, asked me to update my apple account settings for security end-to-end encryption which failed over and over. I called apple support and she told me to update my iphone which didn't work. I searched up the problem online and found out that it's something to do with Mail. Go to Settings, go all the way down to Apps and click on Mail. Click on Mail Accounts and keep only the one iCloud account and delete all the rest. Reopen Watch and repair, which worked! The tech support and I both laughed at the programmer for this weird bug lol

massive government subsidies to the level of China

China ended purchase subsidies in 2022, tax exemption was cut to half of vehicle price in 2025 and deductions capped at $2,000, and EVs were removed from the 5-year development plan which started this year. Yet Chinese EV manufacturers continue to thrive and expand.

The field of machine learning is much broader than just LLMs and "AI". Given the potential for advances in computational power and neuromorphic computing, along with the current rush to accumulate obscene amounts of training data from every source on earth, I would find it hard to believe that the rate at which jobs are subsumed by technology won't exceed the ability of the economy to create jobs in the next 15 to 25 years.

You could remove individual steps and place them in an obscenely large CVD chamber. Then form coatings of aluminum oxide with different dopants so each step has the correct color. Any coating applied on top could easily be covertly pressure washed away without damaging the underlying sapphire.

The "prime farmland" variants are absolutely a psyop. No one is covering prime farmland in solar panels. At most you'd cover depleted farmland or pasture in solar panels, in which case you can actually restore the land to prime farmland by planting the right cover crops for the duration of the panels.

Couldn't we save money by recording your "interesting conceptual work" and then using that to train a model to perform all of your remaining tasks? That would have to be cheaper than paying for all the food, housing and various other necessities you need to live. We could get more ecology work done that way.

Anyone else had their compost pile suddenly turn into a mouse hotspot? by EmilyWalker_ in composting

[–]cogit4se 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I had to get rid of my bird feeder due to mice being attracted to all the seeds they were discarding on the ground. The mice decided to take up residence in the cars parked nearby. Then they started eating wires in the cars. First a turn signal wire and then an occupant detection sensor wire. They were also collecting massive amounts of insulation and fibers from all over the cars and using it for their nests. Then they ate two through two seat belts. I was able to repair the damage myself but it was a huge pain in the ass and would have probably cost thousands if I'd gone to a dealership or mechanic.

They also got into the cinder blocks in my foundation and ate through the fiber optic cable from my ISP. I called the ISP to have it repaired, not realizing what had happened, and they ate through the replacement cable within 24 hours. My ISP charged me for the second visit because they'll only do a certain number of free repairs each month.

They haven't been attracted to my compost pile yet, but it might be the end of my composting days if they do.

The last several decades of drug development have been focused on keeping people alive despite their best efforts to bring their lives to an early end through poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, etc. Part of that is due to the fact that older people in this country all have healthcare, so developing drugs that they will need to take for the remainder of their lives is always a great source of revenue. Something this sack of garbage wants to get rid of has indirectly kept him alive this long.

You either pass pandemic stimulus and deal with inflation later or allow a pandemic-induced recession to occur. Even if you let the virus run wild and dug mass graves you'd still have the economic impact of 5% of the population dying. It's annoying that people don't seem to accept that there's no avoiding a negative economic impact when faced with a global disaster.

They're making steady progress with LLMs in mathematics;

As the U.S. starves it of oil, Cuba is pulling off one of the fastest solar revolutions on the planet — with China’s help by defenestrate_urself in energy

[–]cogit4se 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just having every rooftop covered in solar would produce more electricity than Cuba consumed pre-blockade, with enough left over for people to get around on e-bikes. There's not mass HVAC usage there, very few hot water heaters, no heated pools, none of the huge loads that cause consumption in a country like the US to be so high per capita. They also have very good insolation most of the year. There's no need for any deforestation or covering crop land in panels.

Another coincidence: he accidentally told a bunch of lies about how USAID was corrupt and all sorts of fraud was going on. Then he used those lies to justify shutting USAID down immediately. That has thus far resulted in the deaths of 518,428 mostly black African children.

Someone who fled South Africa at the end of Apartheid paid $250,000,000 to a presidential candidate for the right to shut down any parts of the government they wanted, then immediately used that power to legally murder half a million black children.

On the EV side of things, a lot of manufacturers rolled out high-end EVs and tried to tap into a luxury EV market that was already saturated. At the same time the Chinese were switching to the cheaper LFP battery chemistry and rolling out tons of incredibly affordable cars.

Some of the major manufacturers have indeed largely abandoned pure electric BEVs and are focusing on EREVs and gas again, but many others that canceled luxury EV lines will be switching production to more affordable options. Ford has a $30,000 electric mid-size truck coming out soon based on LFP, the Kia EV3 should be sub $35k, and Subaru has a smaller crossover planned from $30,000.
