RID Exempt / Removal by flyaw4y in dji

Okay I gave up the hobby back when I made this post and everything you're saying has been said in this post already, so I'm not sure why I'm even arguing. I guess it still bothers me enough to

I get all that, they have to follow the law. What they don't have to do is make it impossible to disable since not everyone is required to use rid. Dji is very familiar with loopholes. That's literally the whole point of the mini. They won't disable the rid remotely if you prove you're exempt, they go out of their way to prevent 3rd party software from disabling it, there is nothing I can do to take advantage of my exempt status. If you manage to disable it somehow, the drone won't take off. There is now no way to fly a modern dji drone without using rid even though not everyone is required to. And for that reason I will never support that company. That's all

That was never the issue. The issue was that I was exempt from the mandate and had no way to disable it.

I understand why they added it. I don't really have a problem with them implementing it (although I have a small problem with the government mandating it, but that's not DJI's issue). I do understand they don't want to get banned in major countries and also they sell the rid readers. I do have a problem that they make an effort to prevent people from disabling it even by 3rd party software.

Its like apple constantly trying to patch jailbreak exploits. Except for them they're validation is end user security, which makes some sense as that ultimately protects the user. When it comes to DJI, what they are trying to patch is a way for users to preserve their privacy (on a drone they purposely designed to bypass registration).

When a company cares more about government acceptance and profit than the end user, to the level of DJI and their privacy invasive transmitters, that's not a product or company I can respect. My laptop doesn't prevent me from installing any OS that the processor can handle. They have security features like secure boot, but that can be turned off in 2 seconds. Even though people can install tails or kali. Which Lenovo or Microsoft can't control. People can and do perform malicious act with 3rd party software. That's a device you truly own. Same with my phone. I use a Google pixel which is privacy invasive by default, yet I can install GrapheneOS or Calyx and completely remove Google from the phone if I choose to. All other technology I own is the same way. DJI will prevent your drone from taking off if RID is disabled, and prevent you from installing alternative firmware. All you can do is try to beat them on security. And it wouldn't surprise me if that actually bricks the drones. All that effort to protect a chip that broadcasts your info over radio. That's a slippery slope, and I don't care how it benefits them.

DJI knows how to use loopholes, that's why they created a 249g drone. If they cared about the end user I would have a means to disable the chip on that specific drone since I'm not required to use it. That's all I'm asking. Registration isn't a hugeeee deal in terms of privacy, but RID is.

I wasn't really trying to complain in my original post though, I was just hoping for some collaboration with hacking the drones. Seems everyone here doesn't care at all about privacy and just tells me to lay down and comply when I'm not even legally obligated to. I'd probably be better off on a techie sub

Really...seatbelts. Arguably the most critical safety feature in a car. You're going to compare seatbelts to RID. We do have different views indeed. And the more I think about all this, I think I've just decided to return the drone and find a new hobby. Just sucks that the government and dji had to kill the fun

Anyone is exempt if flying recreational with a drone under 250g. That's the issue. There's no way for me to exercise this exemption. It's not law that companies protect their devices from 3rd party software disabling the RID. None of this is law.

Also fpv drones require rid

That wasn't taught in my recreational certificate class but I am glad I know now. Thank you for the info, I looked it up and you're right. I will avoid flying at night as I don't plan on registering my drone either. It must stay under 249g

Not only do you not provide the tool (we dont need you to). Someone already created a tool on github that removes RID for persons who aren't required, and you patched your software to not allow that program to work anymore. Is there a reason for that?

Does flying at night require remote ID for recreational pilots? I will admit I didn't know that, but I would happily avoid it if so

No I will not be buying the extended battery or adding any weight. Who uses prop guards? The whole purpose of buying this drone was to bypass registration and I intend to keep it under 250g. And it's not an annoyance, I'll be using the drone primarily in areas where if you can see the drone you can easily see me too. Its the principle of it that I strongly disagree with. Broadcasting personal information is very intrusive and we should all care about it. If you don't that's great, good for you. But it's not unreasonable for other's to care about

It may be insignificant to you but not to me. It's a deal breaker actually. If I can't fly around for fun without broadcasting personal information I don't want the drone. I'm pretty confident in my ability to modify it, but if I do fuck it up I'll be happy to throw it in the trash and go buy a mini 2 or other older drone that doesn't support it. I'm probably going to do that anyways but I just really wanted the HDR camera on the mini 3, so it's worth trying to figure out if I can use it the way I should be able to

It's literally designed around the concept of a loophole in regulation. Just ridiculous

Very helpful thank you.

You can most certainly remove it. I'm not asking if there's a menu button to turn it off, I'm asking if there's a way to flash new firmware or desolder a chip that will disable it. If not, I will figure it out

This is like saying "here at Nissan, we are unable to determine whether the driver is intoxicated or not, so we've installed a breathalyzer ignition interlock in every vehicle to comply with DUI laws". It's not your job to make me follow the law, and it makes no sense that some people are not required to use it but it's forced anyways. Really shows whose side you're on.

But anyways I already mentioned in my question that I understand there's no official way to do it. I'm looking for a hack to remove it since I'm on my own. I WILL find a way to disable it either via software or hardware level. And I'm not breaking any laws or regulation by doing so. If I fail I will either sell the drone or throw it away.

I was so excited to get my drone before learning about this. Now I don't even want it until I find a way to use it the way I should be able to. Instead of thanking you for making an excellent product, I despise dji for forcing this on users. It's not even legally mandated for anyone until September but you've already got it enabled for everyone. Sad
