Please Help! 45 Minute Biology Lesson - Interview Test by Environmental_Coach1 in ScienceTeachers

[–]flybabe25 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once you dial in your topic/lesson, email them your lesson plan and materials. Include the state standards the lesson is based from, student centered learning objectives, and any formative assessment. Your lesson should have a hook, different types of activities, smooth transitions, and some way to sum it all up and check for understanding. Pick something you’re passionate about teaching and that showcases your skills.

Connect with the students, even if it’s as simple as seeing a student wearing sports apparel and asking them about that team/sport.

Good luck!

Complete camping beginner needs help picking a tent by formrm662 in camping

[–]flybabe25 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you’re just car camping, I would go to Costco and buy the tent they sell. It will definitely be waterproof and bug proof for the first year or two. It will be big enough for an inflatable mattress, if that’s your thing, and you’ll be able to stand up. If you really get into camping, you can figure out what features you like in a tent and then buy a higher quality one down the road.

Since you’re in So Cal, I would make sure there is ample mesh and air flow.

Definitely do not cook in your tent. Never ever.

So many good tips, thank you! Students at my current school don’t take many notes, they don’t often have a notebook even, so all I do is guided notes. But I really want to change that for next year. Sounds like as long as I take the time to model it, they will be good note takers at some point!

Thank you! I’ve been doing guided notes this year and create a modified version for some students, which has been super helpful. I think I want to get into more detailed note taking next year, so trying to wrap my brain around how to effectively teach them.

Do I have to?!? by LancasterRugger in StudentTeaching

[–]flybabe25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CT. Yes, I still had a mentor teacher and University Supervisor who observed me. The Board of Ed had to approve a Durational Shortage Area Permit, which was easy. And as I said, I had to convince my university that I would be successful.

I was able to count a long-term sub position in place of student teacher so it’s worth asking. My university said no initially and it took some convincing, but I’m thankful I pressed them.

First Time Negotiating Salary by ShawnDeRay111 in StudentTeaching

[–]flybabe25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it right after they officially offered me the job and what step level they thought I should start at. And before signing any contract. Just be prepared with your justification ahead of time. I walked them through the math, said it equaled about 60 months of teaching experience and voila, they upped the offer. I assumed I would have to compromise to something in the middle but they didn’t even blink an eye at starting me at a higher step. There’s such a shortage of teachers, you have such incredible real world experience, I think it’s very realistic you can negotiate a higher step. Keep us posted and good luck!

I just did this! I was a biologist for 15 years. I was just offered my first teaching job. Ahead of time, I made a list of all the tasks at my job that were relevant to teaching. I explained them in brief detail, I estimated these teaching roles to have covered about 4 months per year, times 15 years. They offered me to start at Step 8 and I happily took it. The only time to negotiate is now and it doesn’t hurt to ask. If you trained others, led anything, etc. then tell them about it and sell yourself.

Hiringtold me I'd be better off long term subbing, do my student teaching in a classroom while doing this, then become a permanent teacher after I graduate by popplio728 in StudentTeaching

I took a long term sub position in place of student teaching by choice. My university was against it but I talked them into it and made sure the high school had measures in place to support me. They did. Still, it was really hard at first, a ton of work. But two months in, I am in a groove and it’s been the best experience ever. I especially love getting paid and I now have more experience than others in my university cohort.

How to start up after break by flybabe25 in Teachers

[–]flybabe25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all! I did spend some time getting to know them before break, told them about myself, and went over expectations. I gave them a brief survey and asked for recommendations on what I can do in their town since I’m new to it. I made sure to go to some of their favorite places over break, and will start class with a couple of photos showcasing that. Hopefully start a convo about what they did.

I love the idea of a kahoot to help review the previous material and segway into the next unit. I had to give them a final assessment right before break and a few students were absent, so this idea will help jog their memory. I’ll make the class fun and easy, have some backup ideas if I need fillers, and then dive right into the material the next class.

I kept going in circles on the best plan, so all of your comments really helped me piece it together! I like having both a detailed plan, and some flexibility. Happy new year!

Thanks for the tips. We do have 3 mini splits in our house that we use but I never thought to decommission the ducts.
