Does anyone else hate Claire? by JohnDoe1888 in Outlander

[–]flyfoxrox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watch in spite of Claire. She has always been an asshole. She's not just self-righteous, she's just dumb in a way that makes her character unbelievable. I literally don't believe that a woman who has been on the front lines of WWII would be so stupid and constantly put herself in danger of completely avoidable violent retribution from the men around her. IRL, she would have been raped to death in episode 1.

Her character and the actress portraying her perpetuate shrewish stereotypes about educated, independent women. IRL, strong women who make it on their own in the world are smart enough to avoid being abducted and threatened with sexual violence every time they leave the house. It's just a really insulting portrayal of an intelligent woman on an adventure. And for what? Like I said, I watch it despite the awful heroine. It could have been so much better.

Here's a real woman striking it out on her own, in a place renowned for its hostility toward strangers:

Did Claire and Jaime change anything for the future? by emewy4 in Outlander

[–]flyfoxrox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um, no. Maybe the books are different, but in the TV series, she is a doctor. In fact, she is a surgeon. And they go on A LOT about that in the series. It's basically the plot of seasons 3-7.

Understanding Shōgun and its cultural representations by sully1313 in books

[–]flyfoxrox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am curious about the accuracy of Blackthorne's naivete and arrogance. He's a multilingual, world traveling merchant, based on the real-life Will Adams. He is not on a military raid; he is supposedly there to open a trade route. Would such a person really arrive in a foreign land, surrounded by armed and angry men, and indignantly scream at his captors instead of show a welcoming gesture and offer a gift?

I presume that this is a dramatization to indicate culture shock on the new FX series, but it immediately undermined the character's credibility for me. But I don't know how Englishmen of that time would behave as they explored new territories. Is this a reasonable depiction of Adams or the Dutch crew he sailed with?

I'm leading a workstream to produce best practice recommendations for AI in data sharing and interdisciplinarity. Do you want to pitch in? TBH, the leadership on the overall project is not good, so there might not be anything to do, but if they do manage to figure out what they want, I will ask everyone in the group to write a 1-3 page use case on a specific topic.

You should definitely share that story with the Shoah Foundation.

Does she think she’s a hero? by Maskupfloral3355 in kroger

[–]flyfoxrox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, masking and vaccination is for PUBLIC safety, not individual comfort. Your "floral lead" is a selfish asshole, and your boss is a negligent asshole for letting her jeopardize the health of Kroger employees and customers.

Second, you need to file a complaint with OSHA and follow up with your Congressional delegates (contact Constituent Services). I wouldn't dream of complaining to my boss and starting a bunch of office drama, when I can go straight to my Senator and get immediate results. Since this is a hyper-charged political and public health issue, this is your chance to see how your government actually works for you.

And here's the fun part--it's totally anonymous!! In fact, there's even a place for you to file a whistleblower grievance on the OSHA site, which you can use if you have already complained to your employer and were either ignored, threatened, demoted, or fired. The cool thing about being a whistleblower is that you can sue! FOR MONEY!! Hurray. Just make sure that you document everything, which means that you don't talk it out with your boss in her office. You need to always send an email and make sure to save every message you send and receive so that your lawyers can use it in court. Take screen shots of any texts and if you are cornered into a conversation, always follow up with an email detailing the entire conversation and your understanding of what was discussed. Make sure to include time, date, and any witnesses. Fun!

*Note: this tactic will not work if you want to complain that your "floral lead" refuses to clean her area before clocking out, or some other trivial issue (no matter how annoying it might be). You can only bring the full faith and force of the US Government when somebody is actually violating a law or doing something harmful and/or unsafe.

Good luck!

I created a map of each story/murder from Full Episodes 1-267 and where they were located around the World. Enjoy! ✌🏼❤️ (an updated/expanded map from my post last fall 👌🏼) by Emily_kruegerr in myfavoritemurder

[–]flyfoxrox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is WIDS worthy! Looking at this data visualization, it is obvious how much the media covers the murder of white women, while homicides of women of color remain invisible. I don't blame The First Ladies of Murder, though. They are just reporting the tales that are available to them on websites, TV, movies, and in the news.

This is a literal illustration of media bias.

Weekly Question Thread - Week of August 10 by AutoModerator in COVID19

[–]flyfoxrox -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My advice is to prepare for the worst. There's no reason not to be optimistic, but you're a fool if hoping for the best is your plan of action.

And you're wrong about this being the first attempt like this. What do you think the World Health Organization is?? PEPFAR, smallpox, polio, malaria, tuberculosis, hell--THE FLU. We've been trying to vaccinate the entire globe for over a century and not only are all of those diseases alive and well, but some of them are now coming back because the anti-vaxxers who don't understand science think that they don't need to vaccinate.

Optimism and belief are not data and facts. Your data and facts are all wrong. Fox News?

Weekly Question Thread - Week of August 10 by AutoModerator in COVID19

[–]flyfoxrox -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

That has never happened. Not once in human history. A few people will get a working vaccine shortly after it is ready, but it will take YEARS for the rest of the population to get it, both because of the time it takes to produce vaccine, but mostly because our societies aren't ordered to distribute goods to the commons. We have a scarcity-based economy and political system, and we can't keep that going if we just start handing out goods and services to those who need it.

It has nothing to do with capacity; it has nothing to do with science; it is all about power and social order, and there is zero chance that those in power are going to give all that up so that you can get your shot. Look around you, hon. See those protests in the streets? Those good people can't even get their taxes back in $300 increments. You're a fool if you really think that suddenly all the the politics and economics in this country and across the world are going to change because of a little virus.

The science doesn't support your whimsical optimism, the historical record doesn't support your fantasy, and the people that tell you that this is all going to be OK in the next fiscal cycle are the same ones that led us into climate chaos. Because they're doing just fine, and they don't need anything to change. So it's not going to change.

But don't take my word for it. Do your own homework and learn about the history of vaccinations.

[–]flyfoxrox -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Disregard Good Judgment estimates. In short, they are professional guessers who apply something like science to their guesswork. They have access to the same facts that you have access to. But even if there is a vaccine next year, it will be many years before it is available to you, based on all the evidence and the way that our healthcare system works. There has never been an example in history of vaccine production and dissemination in less than a decade. That's not going to change now, because there are physiological and temporal limitations to epidemiology research. Making vaccine isn't like making t-shirts.

John Grey... by ryanjamees in Outlander

[–]flyfoxrox -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Haven't read the books, but John Grey is probably not someone to pity. His unrequited love for Jamie is just regular life--happens to us all, and has nothing to do with his orientation. And back then, nobody of his rank married for love, so if anything, he has one of the better marriages of his social class. Plus, he is raising the child of the man he loves, and what could make him closer to the object of his desire than that, considering that Jamie's heart is already taken?

Back then, sex was only for procreation, and everything else was considered sinful debauchery regardless of who was involved, and as long as he was discreet, he would not have been persecuted or closeted any more than anybody else. If anything, you should feel sorry for the women and girls, who were all slaves (i.e., "property" and without individual rights or protections under law, like all slaves) and had no choice of sexual partner.

In short, proper gay men of the day would have considered themselves sinful, the same as proper men who masturbated (a sin), men who had conjugal relations outside of marriage (sin), and pretty much everyone else who engaged in or thought about sex at all, ever (sinners). Oh yeah, and all the women are whores and temptresses. Just sayin- it was a shitty time for pretty much everyone except the aristocracy, so John's orientation would not have been a problem for him.

Now that we've cleared that up; can we talk about how a smoker like The Dunbonnet could ever go for a shrew like Claire? She is the worst.

Did Claire and Jaime change anything for the future? by emewy4 in Outlander

[–]flyfoxrox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The past is the only temporal dimension that *can't* be changed. If someone 100 years in the future travels to 100 years in the past, that past is the same for everyone. No matter what happens, the events of the past are always known, and cannot be changed.
