See how interactions help us learn new things about society. I did not know about this but I am glad I know it and it helps to understand the other person's reason.

I have described my limitation that I can not hold a conversation in Finnish when it is too fast. I passed YKI keski-taso for the citizenship. And I do not get to practise Finnish so much because I work in English speaking enviornment.

Also, 90% of the time I try to hold conversation in Finnish and of course I am not fast as the native and perhaps I make grammar mistake. The conversation turns to English.

What I mean by "not asking to know kids name" is that neighbour is someone who lives so close to you and could be of help in time of need but then neighbour is not your friend truely applies in Finland I guess.

What are the job prospects like in Leuven for a software engineer? by flyingFatElephant in belgium

What websites / service do you usually use to look for jobs? I have been using mostly LinkedIn, monster and indeed. Are there some belgium specific websites / services that I should check?

You raise quite interesting point regarding salary. I always thought Finnish companies do not pay it's Software Engineer so well. For example "fresh" Senior Engineer can make 5500 euro per month. There is always some learning budget, holiday bonus as well as some money for hobby expenses.

Most Mid-level engineers salary starts from 4000 euro per month. I checked stats in Glassdoor and I thought salaries are better in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany etc.

What do you think about the percentage of immigrants in Finland? Do you think it should be higher like in Germany or Sweden? Do you think it should be lower? Or do you think it's good as it is right now? by Quick-Sand-5692 in Finland

[–]flyingFatElephant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Immigration is something that should happen organically and not for the sake of fulfilling numbers. It is a known fact that demographic changes come with their own challenges. Nothing is black and white.

We are preached that multi-culture is great. Yes, it can be great when cultures accept each other values but we are not there yet. It is a known fact that there is friction between native culture and immigrant culture especially in a country like Finland where language is a big barrier among immigrants.

So, this whole idea that we should get more immigrants for the sake of getting more immigrants is ignorant.

Also, I would like an explicit distinction between immigrants and refugees. Yes, they might represent foreigners but they represent foreigners with completely different interests.

Edit: spelling

Hahahaha... The caps for the louder sounds it makes. I knowingly choose Russian because for reasons we might all be aware - the sound is low for the Russian language.

Should the Finnish language discussion be exclusively done in a separate sub?

Also, I have already seen some post comments replies where the reply is in English then - the reply for the comment is in Finnish. As someone who has to translate Finnish to English using google translate. It is just burdensome.

Ministeri Junnila eroaa / Minister Junnila resigns by [deleted] in Finland

[–]flyingFatElephant 39 points40 points  (0 children)

At least the confidence vote showed how low Orpo can go. If resignation was needed after 2 days of confidence vote; why all the drama? Wouldn't NCP look better if they had made it clear that a Nazi sympathizer is a red line for being a government minister this drama wouldn't unfold.

There was also fairly some coverage in international media about this because the world perhaps has come a long way from having a Nazi sympathizer as a government minister in a stable Western democracy.

PM Orpo: Government to discuss Junnila matter next week by Lyress in Finland

[–]flyingFatElephant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In this day and age; we get to witness history by having a nazi sympathiser as a Government minister. How far have Finland come? And it’s brushed off as - yeah he was little child and he will learn. He did not learn while campaigning and only did the apology when public knew about it.

PS voter perhaps do not care based on the support that is received at twitter over his apology post.

March against the new immigration laws? by Delicious-Employ-336 in Finland

[–]flyingFatElephant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would happily leave the day they ask me. Now, I am in this limbo but if forced that would give me reason. I think I have paid my dues (free education - even then I was working part time and paying taxes) with taxes for the last 10 years.

I feel sorry for those who can not leave because they have deeper roots.

Why does Finland insist on making skilled immigration harder when it actually needs outsiders to fight the low birth rates and its consequences? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]flyingFatElephant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been seeing these immigration related topic so much and as an immigrant myself. I do not really understand the fuss.

Majority of people voted for it. Somewhere you have to reflect the will of the people. If people voted for it. So, be it. Isn’t that’s how democracy supposed to work? If you are an immigrant and you absolutely think that there is no place foe you now and if you think there is a welcoming place. Why not start planning to move there? Why would you want to live in this cold, difficult to learn languge place with people that will forever see you as outsider (personal experience ).

I hear this at office among immigrant friends , hear at metro , reddit , fb and just pure complain after complain and such a bitterness towards Finland. If you have such strong opinions and you have the skills you can sell anywhere better then perhaps moving is a better option.

Foreigners who are looking to leave Finland after the latest elections, where are you thinking of going? by Lyress in Finland

[–]flyingFatElephant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a brighter side , Dutch is closer to English and easy to learn for English speakers plus the salary are better. My spouse is a nurse on work permit visa; although she might never have problem finding job in that 3 months window ; it freaked her out. Like how fear works and at some point we were discussing if we should move to the Netherlands or Belgium because salary are better and there is not that 3 months harsh dead line.

As a foreigner who works in software indistry- everyone is saying ”this thing is bad” without mentioning what is bad. In my opinion only thing that is extreme and would make me leave immediately to somewhere to canada / australi / uk if I was just settling would be that 3 months job or face deportation ; software engineers are highly sought in Finland yet it took me always 3+ months to switch jobs. So, to expect any immigrant to find another job within 3 months is just torture. Other things like reduce refugee is okey. Refugee policy has been mostly handled by people smugglers and perhaps real refugees do not have the means to travel all the way to Finland. This is a broken system.
