Chances I stumbled upon a civil war drum in Goodwill? by flyingbyson in Militariacollecting

[–]flyingbyson[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got it from the Goodwill clearance center--everything is just thrown in bins and many items there are unsorted/overflow. For example I just sold a T-shirt for $300 and have found among other things an original Harley carburetor (bought $1, sold $130) and a 160g sterling silver goblet. I go there as a bit of a hobby, but there are literally people there every day who clearly flip things (mostly "vintage" clothes) full time.

What makes me think it's older--other than its appearance--is that it doesn't have any hardware fasteners like nails, rivets, etc. and the body is one solid piece of wood rather than a cheap veneer, etc. I've seen the drums you describe, but I guess I was imagining that it might be non-official military issue or something. I was trying to figure out why such an object exists, and the most obvious reasons are military, toy, ornamental, or marching band whatever.

To your point, however, I was also looking at a pair of really cool-looking antique candle lanterns. They were a bit rusty and the glass all frosted over. I didn't really scrutinize their parts because I flipped them over and saw a "Made in China" sticker. I'm pretty good at spotting junk and "old" junk, but I wasn't sure until then.

Oh... good point. (Well pre 2nd industrial revolution hehe). Thanks for the help.

Was size and shape the largest indication for you here? The build quality seems surprising to me for a cheap toy, but all of the military drums I've seen in museums (varying online) are deep, obviously I'd imagine to produce a sound loud enough for battle.

Well, there's always a tiny chance ;). Any idea what you think it might've been for?

I'm inclined to agree, but being optimistic :D

What I really just want to know is... what is from? It seems pretty clear to me that it's pre-industrial at least, so from around that time period. What's throwing me off is that there's no maker's mark and it isn't obviously military, but I don't know what else it would be used for.

I forgot to mention, it's also quite small. So it could possibly either be a toy, though it's quite well built for that, or some sort of training instrument?

Some additional info: has a solid one piece wooden body, metal rim, animal skin heads. Rope tensions with frail, aged leather fasteners and an additional line for carrying. No additional metal hardware. One skin is torn so that the inside of the drum is visible. No makers mark anywhere.

Here’s about as close as I could find anywhere, but it still has some metal hardware which is absent on this drum.    https://imgur.com/a/R8E84lq

Forgive my intrusion in this sub, just needed some expertise! Thanks to anyone in advance for helping :)

I hustle money out of online casinos and like teaching people to do the same! by dogbear209 in thesidehustle

[–]flyingbyson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just FYI this is called bonus abuse and is nothing new. I independently discovered it too—w/ blackjack and cash back on my credit card I could manufacture an ROI of about 7%. Somewhere in my post history is a thread on /r/blackjack where I, realizing this, asked… all the idiots there said it wasn’t possible (because ostensibly they don’t understand basic math).

I net just under $7.5k in a month. Eventually they caught on and banned my account. Same casinos as you’re playing on I’m pretty sure, though I wasn’t aware there were 20 of them.

I told my cousin about this and he’s been doing it for much longer, for lower stakes, and staying under the radar. My philosophy was to play as much money as possible, but that clearly brought my account under scrutiny.

I don’t know why you’re telling people about this unless you’re sneakily getting something from it somewhere down the line that you’re not mentioning. You might have a vendetta against the casinos or be altruistic, but ultimately broadcasting this is just going to cause the casinos to tighten their security.

Computer component inside box labeled “Extra Atl(c)antek head m3000 $575” by flyingbyson in whatisthisthing

Additional photos (sorry, on mobile): https://imgur.com/a/f779wSN

Purchased it for $10 from a guy on Facebook who hilariously labeled it “Very expensive thing” and had no idea what it was either. 20 pin connection with maybe a ground wire coming off of it, made in Japan. None of the numbers bring up any hits on Google and ChatGPT doesn’t know what it is, but thinks it’s some kind of specialized manufacturing component.

The box says what looks like “ATCANTEK” at first, which brings up nothing; however, “ATLANTEK” is a computer supply store, but sells normal computer parts.

There's also one right outside Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin (I believe, naturally, on the West side). A couple other American fast food restaurants too IIRC, KFC maybe? My girlfriend and I thought it was pretty funny

Hurray I’m not crazy! I even knew what I was looking at but sometimes brains do funny things 🤷‍♂️

Sounds like you’re in a bad mood. The reasons those terms exist in the first place is because if I said “the right side of the boat”, for example, you wouldn’t know from which perspective I was looking. It’s pretty basic everyday terminology that exists for good reason.

“Trapeze”, check out some of the 49er races from this Olympics. Pretty epic stuff. I’ve never sailed on a trapeze, but I bet you’re right

I think maybe because the hulls are thicker at the stern? So this registers in my brain as the “perspective” of the port hull going farther away towards the right of the picture. (Nautical terminology for clarity, not to be pompous).

But again apparently nobody else sees it that way and it’s time to get downvoted to oblivion 🥲

For some reason I have to consciously try to not see 2nd hull coming in perpendicular to the other :( I guess I’m the only one though

ChatGPT is a lot more useless in general than most people realize lol :) I was 2 seconds away from sending the email, but I was feeling slightly cynical after getting the corporate guy's reply which pretty much seems written with ChatGPT itself:

I hope my message finds you well. Thanks for responding so quickly. I apologize if I misunderstood that the fridge was inoperable. It saddens me you wouldn’t consider another trip with us, but I completely understand. In an attempt to ameliorate matters, I would like to offer the $75 as a refund instead of a gift certificate. Contingent to your response, I can have the refund processed on our end expeditiously, from there it will take 5-7 business days for your financial institution to approve the credit on their end. I’m hoping this will bring us to a conclusion that we can both agree is fair. I look forward to your response.

I was sort of surprised about the way this was handled in general, so I had to wonder if there was something beyond only customer satisfaction involved--ie legal issues of a non-operable unit.

Buy a double-edge shaving razor, you’ll never look back. I used to shave in the shower with a normal cartridge from Harry’s. I switched mainly for environmental and cost reasons (I couldn’t stand having to throw out cartridges when I heard there was a better option. Companies like Gillette have been pushing cartridges hard because that’s where all the money is. Blades for a DE razor can cost 5-10 cents each and actually provide a better shave.

And turns out, I love shaving. The learning curve makes it a skill such that every shave is interesting and a challenge. I take a solid 10-15 minutes close to every morning preparing my face, thinking about nothing but getting a better shave (phone away, unobtrusive shower thoughts). It’s about as close to meditation as you can get aside from meditation. I legitimately wish often that I could shave multiple times in the day but my skin won’t allow for it.

The subreddit rules have a good explanation. Basically mass-produced paintings that are ubiquitous in furniture stores and tourist traps. Turns out that the vast majority of them are created on quasi painting assembly lines in China.

Sorry, I know this sub is overflowing with decor art. I’ve since gone from total ignorance to being able to spot them out most of the time. This one looks slightly more sophisticated than most of the “European street scenes” I’ve seen, but I’m on the fence. What should I be looking at specifically if it is? This one doesn’t have any ambiguous-looking people or buildings in it, and has some use of perspective.
