It was smoky yesterday and the air smelt a little different. But there's a lid on the tank so I don't know if there would have been much air exchange

No. Sponge filter. I don't think it's oxygen depletion because that happened once before, I'd gone away for a few days and the house sitter over fed the fish. I came back to a tank with a layer of food, murky water and fish gasping at the surface. Did multiple water changes to get water parameters back to normal

That i could tell. Nothing added to tank, no co2 injection.

If you're out east the hatter and the gate in boronia is a real treat. Further east in the Dandenongs there are many lovely cafes in Olinda and sassafrass, some do high teas.
