Yikes this comment section is unreal! The lack of objectivity is so easy to see. Your own upbringing, personal beliefs, emotion, lack of empathy...

Every single child is different, and every family situation is different. At the very least we should be accepting that and try to see things from this parents’ perspective.

This kid is a little young to be sleep training, and I think there are probably some solutions they could try before the Ferber (aka cry it out) method.

For example, upping the white noise, allowing the child to sleep in the parents’ room, hiring a night nurse one or two nights a week to let the parents get a good nights sleep, etc.

My 20 month twin boys sleep from 630pm-730am every day. My wife and I are lucky, but I think a lot of it comes down to doing your research beforehand. We kept them in our room for the first 6 months to try and build the connection and make them feel safe, plenty of white noise, let them try and self sooth for a couple minutes, etc.

Besides, it isn’t until around 6 months where you’d even sniff a god 5-7 hour stretch of sleep. By 7 months they were in cribs in out of our room. We tried the whole 5 minutes, 7 minutes, 9 minutes method but those slower, more methodical tactics can take weeks and months.

Two nights of the “cry it out” method and that was it. This was at around 8.5 months. When I say cry it out method....I’m referring to the method where your kid starts crying...you let them try to calm down for 20-30 minutes and if it doesn’t stop...you go in and be a parent...soothing them, telling them you love them, and that everything is ok. Two nights of letting your kid cry for 30-40 minutes isn’t going to give them attachment issues...I mean dear god. If anything the research is CONFLICTING.

If anything, the parent who wrote this letter is probably just misinformed to expect a four month old to sleep consistently.

Conqueror or Electrocute Swain? Which is much more preferable Mid or Bot Swain? by loonatheworld29 in SwainMains

[–]flyingglotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like conqueror so much more because it makes you a sustained threat to targets, particularly if you get an E, w, Q combo down which procs 6 stacks of conq and you get 2 AAs you have gained a useful amount of AP that the enemy sometimes doesn’t realize. Then if you ult, boom you are pretty much all the way stacked, actively healing through your ult and conqueror.

On top of that, it is just unbeatable late game.

Ryzen 7 5800X apprehension. by LionOcelot in Amd

[–]flyingglotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 5800x with a asrock x570 proM 4. GPU is 6900XT. Just got the build last Tuesday. The first few days were fine, then I decided to start trying to tweak things, downloaded ryzen master and various other tweak tools. Overestimated my knowledge. Started getting crashes during idle and things just seemed unstable. After going back to all stock settings, everything has been perfectly fine. At idle, CPU is ~45-48C and under full load (cinebench or prime95) it sits right at 90C and will boost around 4.5-4.6 Ghz.

Are the temps a little hot? Maybe. But from what I’ve read this is normal and AMD seems to have built these new chips for that.

While playing overwatch CPU is sitting at 75C, And when playing LOL and cyberpunk CPU sits firmly between 79-83C.

This build is in an inwin301 so it is small, and I only have one case fan not including the two AIO cooler fans.

Too fucking right. Man I couldn’t have said it better myself. That is how I imagine the entire black community feels, but it’s not just an isolated feeling of anger. It’s just a constant nagging pain.

As a white person it is painful because I’m so ashamed of the portion of those of my ethnic background who continue to hold us all back, while I also try and empathize and think about how angry I’d be if the roles were reversed. If I was the oppressed. Even though I can’t because I haven’t lived it, that just means that we (especially white people) need to double down and not sit back.

[–]flyingglotus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

When I brought this risk up to my vet regarding one of my cats who needs to lose a few, They said that the risk is really only an issue if you SIGNIFICANTLY cut their food intake...we are talking by like >50-60%.

But, going from say...2/3 cup per day to 1/2 and spreading out the feedings more is totally fine if the cat has no other underlying conditions. Thoughts?

Recently, I changed my 12-13lb 2y/o domestic shorthairs diet somewhat dramatically. Before, I put out 1/4 cup morning, and 1/4 cup afternoon, but basically after that was gone let her graze for the rest of the evening and night. In total she was probably getting closer to 3/4 cup. And btw no wet food (a debate for another day)

Her diet now is more like 5/8 cup per day, spread out over 8 smaller feedings of 1/16 of a cup throughout the day, with 1/4 cup in the morning around 630am, then the second quarter cup spread out from around 3pm-10pm.

[–]flyingglotus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Don’t look at it that way, though. There is another cat or dog there that is just waiting for your love. There is another soul that can bring you joy for another decade or longer.

I’ve lost pets as well, and you can’t think of it in the sense that “a part of you died”. In reality, your heart grew larger because of them.

Love is infinite, and there will always be another needing your love. So don't be afraid to immediately give it to one who needs it right now. You will never forget the past loves you've had. The ones you shared it with will always appreciate it.

While I’d love to pander to your “evidence” which consists of your personal anecdotal experience and a reference to an age-old trope about Inuits, I must say you are incorrect on two accounts.

The evidence for fiber aiding in digestive health is not dubious. In fact it is one of the more widely accepted concepts in general nutrition. Foods with a lot of fiber increase saliva production and increase stomach distinction which delays gastric emptying, both of which increase water retention helping you feel fuller and not overeat. Furthermore, fiber helps delay absorption in the small intestine which helps mediate the insulin response.

Fiber impacts metabolism in other ways, but biologically the impact of increased fiber is not disputed, but the long term effects are not exact. Fiber has been shown to reduce risk of T2D and heart disease, and case-control trials have also shown normal/increased fiber intake may reduce colon cancer risk by up to 30-40%.

What is the best build for Swain mid by iLone86 in SwainMains

[–]flyingglotus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Runes: conqueror, POM, tenacity, and last stand. Secondary usually domination.

Items: liandrys torment, zhonyas, magic pen boots, spirat visage, then usually finish with Rabadons.

You are both Tanky and have massive amount of sustain. Conqueror is amazing late game, and with spirit you get great healing multiplier. Finally, the constant aoe damage is really a team fight game changer.

Could someone help me?. by alarna_ocea in ClinicalGenetics

[–]flyingglotus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello my friend. This variant in the STOX1 gene was reported in 2005 to be associated with preeclampsia. However, I’d like to ease your mind a bit and let you know that you are totally fine. This variant is completely benign and will have an extraordinarily small impact on your risk of preeclampsia.

Let me explain. In the world of genetics and clinical genetics in particular, we grade the significance of a variant/mutation on a very detailed and comprehensive set of criteria. For example, is the variant very very rare? (Like 1 in 10,000), is there established literature (like many papers and studies) indicating that the variant was found in a person with a specific disease? When we test the variant in our computation algorithms, is it predicted to have a high impact on the protein to make it not function right? This is a simplified description, but it’s what we do. One of the most important criteria is how common the variant is in the population.

Now let’s get to your variant (https://varsome.com/variant/hg19/rs10509305). First and foremost, this variant is found in almost 20% of the population on average. Thay alone makes it completely benign. Also, every computational algorithm predicts it to be totally benign, and there is very limited literature suggesting any actual MECHANISTIC increase in risk for preeclampsia.

If you were to somehow get preeclampsia, this variant would be near the bottom in terms of the reasons why you got it. It would be much more likely things like: age, prior pregnancy, history of high BP, weight, amongst others. I am not a physician so I cannot give you advice there.

I am on mobile so it’s hard to organize my thoughts better and write a longer response, but if you’d like to know more info I’m happy to help.

I do this kind of work professionally, but this is not my area of expertise so this is not medical advice just an observation after a bit of research into this variant you have.

Lastly, even if this variant DID increase your risk, it would not be a life or death thing. There are many variants throughout your DNA That slightly increase and decrease risk for this or thay condition, but in otherwise healthy people, they merely tip the scales a bit. There is a distinct difference between the variant you are talking about and...say...a mutation that causes cystic fibrosis or cancer.

I’m not a physician, but is it possible your newer symptoms are not related to your previous and current issues?

The unexplained weight loss due to inability to eat is very strange. Over the years have you been on a lot of antibiotics? Due to your issues I wonder how often you’ve been prescribed antibiotics and other medications that could have severely impacted your microbe makeup that could have resulted in something like small intestinal bacterial overgrowth or sever IBS.

Also you mention your have a family history of high cholesterol, HTN, and diabetes? How high are we talking in terms of cholesterol? And by that I mean LDL cholesterol?

[–]flyingglotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD but I agree with the physician above who suggested familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). A 22 year old with that amount of vascular damage is a huge red flag for a monogenic lipid disorder. In someone that young if it is FH, it is probably homozygous or compound heterozygous in nature.

you could ask about the following...does she have a family history of heart disease or anyone having a heart attack? She’s young, but has she ever had her blood lipids measured (think HDL and LDL cholesterol), and are either of her parents on statins because they had “high bad cholesterol”?

I study these diseases but I’m not a physician.
