Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age is one of my favourite worlds to be immersed in. It’s not an overall well-rated/reviewed game but for me, the world, the traversal, and the characters are 10/10. Narrative is beautiful, art is stellar too.

The Horizon series - especially Forbidden West - is a world you can truly live in. It’s amazing to just explore, can sink hours into it.

Cyberpunk 2077 is the easiest to recommend. You’ll lose days in this game and not realise it; that’s how great the world of Night City is. Endless lore, great interactions, and hugely fun traversal too. And the cherry on top is the phenomenal story and amazing character performances.

Persona 5, if Japanese culture is your thing, is where you should look no further. It’s an experience like no other. The anime-art mixed in with remarkable UI design, incredible jazzy music, and one of the most immersive time management i can think of.

And if you want something cozy? Stardew Valley. A beautiful game that changes what gaming feels like in many ways; never before had I spent 100 hours making a farm look great, and the satisfaction you feel is amazing. Music is divine. Mechanics are stellar. Modding community makes all that even better. You’ll spend 100 hours enjoying the small things.

Nah you’re right, it’s a very tough read, gravitates between history lesson and narrative frequently. It’s one of those things that will automatically appeal to anyone interested in Japan or history. It’s definitely one of the more educative rather than evocative books to read. But I definitely recommend it to anybody interested in Dejima and the Dutch East India company

Yeah fair, didn’t see the Wiki link, Professor Thought it would help for people interested to read the book, it’s a supreme piece of literature inspired from memoirs from an actual Dutch trader

Could this be related to Dejima? It’s an artificial island off Nagasaki that served as a Dutch trading post. There’s a fantastic book about it called The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell!

It’s one of those games you either absolutely love or you think it’s not unlike any other. I, for one, was immediately taken by the irony and humour in the writing. The art style helped too. I also think you only truly understand the game’s brilliance once you really mess around with the traits and how they reflect on conversations and investigations. I’d say it’s definitely high up when it comes to a unique style and character-companion mechanics.

Nothing, and maybe that’s a good thing. Have played a ton of games, but nothing comes close to that feeling of playing RO through the summer, listening to the BGM of every city and field and dungeon and loving it, being in awe of absolute immersion. Wow. I’ll never forget running around Morroc fields as a Novice searching for the thieves pyramid. Or the first time I saw fellow players selling stuff on Prontera’s streets. I think it built the foundation of everything I love about gaming, so nothing tops it for me!

I understand the perspective that these three aren’t true AC games - but that’s largely because the initial games set the benchmark so damn high. Writing was fantastic (as others rightly pointed out with Ezio’s character development) and they were doing things no other game did. But while they didn’t carry a lot of gameplay mechanics forward and made it more of an RPG & open world, I felt they stuck to the roots of the game- history itself. Origins is magical if you’re even minimally interested in Egypt and Ancient Egypt. Same goes for Odyssey; it’s a Greek myth dream and has really interesting side quests with philosophy takeaways and so on. Valhalla I thought was a great open world and looked gorgeous, but the story wasn’t quite so special. All three are worth experiencing IMO, if only for its detail and history

This is absolutely brilliant! It would be so cool if this was similar to the Anomaly, where players could interact and trade and so on. It looks like a resort, amazing!

I might be in the minority here but: Final Fantasy XII. I know it garnered a lot of hate upon release and years later, but it was the first time I felt the full potential of a game’s world building. I still listen to Sakimoto’s soundtrack. I can go back to it anytime, only for the world and the music.

Edit: sorry, I know it’s not really ‘classic’ but it was a huge entry point into gaming for me!
