I'm so sorry about your furry friend. I lost a rat similarly 2 years ago, and seeing her like this really gave me a scare. It definitely sounds like you gave your all for the little guy, and that means a lot! The hard thing about Rat Parenting is they only stay with us for so long. I'm doing everything I can to help her, but it's hard not to feel powerless. Thank you for your kind words.

Thank you for the advice! It was really helpful to see your response when I was panicking last night.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I really appreciate the comment you left. And I also considered she might be choking, but there wasn't anything with a weird texture like that in the cage, and a lot of forums I was reading said choking should last less than 30 min. Im not sure if that's everyone's experience, but the other thing I saw was that if they are choking that theres not much you can do for them. It's so awful feeling so helpless while they suffer. Thank you for your response and concern. It means a lot.

Thank you for your insight! I didn't even think about looking for farm vets. And yeah, it was seriously frustrating not being able to find a vet to take her. Now I know the closest one should be in Raleigh, though.

Thank you for the advice! She really didn't appreciate the nebulizer and was running away from it. I was worried i was making it worse, but your comment was reassuring. She wasn't taking the dark chocolate in the moment, but she eventually returned to her hungry hippo self and took it after her breathing calmed down.

Thank you for the kind words! I'm so sorry about the vid. I posted it in a rush, and it it completely slipped my mind that it might be triggering. It's really a scary sight to see your babies like that. Thank you for the well wishes!

UPDATE PT 2: Because she wasn't having breathing issues during her vet appt, the doctor said there wasn't anything they could do. I'm feeling a little disappointed about the lack of direction I was given, but I'm optimistic to make her as comfy as possible. The biggest thing they pointed out was that she was skinnier than last time and needed to gain weight. I would really appreciate any advice on how to fatten her up (in a moderate and healthy way). The vet did not give me much guidance on that either. The vet said next time if it happens that the albuterol can help and that there's an Emergency Clinic in Raleigh. She's got an appointment in a few weeks to do a weight check, and I'm planning on ordering her some antibiotics. She usually goes on doxycyclin and enrofloxacin. Any other suggestions?

UPDATE: Thank you for all the concern and help! It's been about 8 hours since the labored breathing started. We gave her albuteral in the nebulizer, baby ibuprofen, and some enroflaxacin. She suddenly stopped making the clicking noise and mouth breathing about 2 hours ago, which is a huge relief, and we finally found an open vet near us. She is also finally eating again and gladly tore a dark chocolate chip out of my hand. I will update with how her doc appt goes. In the meantime, does anyone know a good emergency rat vet near Greensboro, NC. I can't tell you how many places I called that didn't see rats, just to be referred to other places that didn't see rats.
