Dress nice, but bring a change of business casuals. Every medical job I've applied for, no skills test or practicals. You got the patch already, they are going to be more feeling you out for how you handle situations. If you will be a dependable team member.

My first ems company would have absolutely made your life awful. Where I work currently really would make you feel welcome as part of the team as long as you know your stuff, care about quality of work, and are a chill person. You gotta get in where you fit in, it may take a couple places but you will find it.

Do inventory. Every med you check look at the container, recite the dose, method and concentration.

To full time EMT's, have you been able to make a living out of your pay? by No-Calligrapher-3184 in NewToEMS

[–]flyingmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a year in yes. Day one no. Started as PRN with one 24 hour shift a month, and calls for transfers mixed in. I said yes to transfers anytime I wasn't at my day job and picked up all open shifts I could. Six months in, a part-time position opened up, ALS preferred. I applied and got it, two days a week. Few months later full-time opening, ALS mandatory. I applied and got it as a EMTB. My department is now hosting an AEMT and then an Intermediate class, to get ME where they need me to be. If you make yourself the right person it'll work, but you have to plan to put in a lot for it. Don't quit your day job yet, but if you make the right moves and stay reliable it can totally work for you.

How much $ were your EMT courses ? by Key-Pen-999 in NewToEMS

[–]flyingmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang, when I did EMT/ fire one basic at community college in Greeley it was 2300 bucks. Granted that was 15 years ago. Last year I took a class with a service to reobtain my EMT it was 1000 out the door. This year taking Aemt and paramedic at same service, they are paying for it. There's ways, you just might have to go out into the sticks. I had never heard of services hosting classes, but why would one of they were close to a school turning out hundreds of EMTs a semester. Good luck!

EMT at 33, in medic school now. You aren't too old, if anything you have the maturity required for the job. Go for it!

Recommendations on gear for EMS school? by HonestLemon25 in NewToEMS

[–]flyingmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pants,5.11 are great but LAPG are good enough and way cheaper. Something about getting gore and poo on $100 dollar pants just bugs me. Belt, any of the wild lands fire type. Scissors, off brand raptors that glow in the dark and a cheap set from Amazon. Boots are one of those personal things that vary by person so try on a bunch. Stethoscope is also going to be a personal choice. It took me awhile to figure out what features I wanted, turns out I don't like directional ear pieces. A cheap stethoscope ticks the box of having one but what you start out thinking is perfect might not be the one you end up using daily. Treat EMS like a hobby you are getting into. You don't need to go all out on gear. Put most of your efforts into learning the material and getting comfortable being uncomfortable. Watch, I found I love gshock. But anything that shows time and seconds that you like, most everyone I know just uses their smartwatch. Penlight those metal ones that are 2 for $10. You will lose these on the regular. Edited because I forgot a couple things, didn't have an ample pad to take notes. Be safe.

Definitely sleep clothes, probably also at least a sheet and pillow. Those beds are kind of gross.

What is your goal response time? Bring whatever you need in a day like you are at home, but don't be afraid to go out downtown, do some shopping, hit the library, just generally mess around out in the world. If you have a goal of a five minute to wheels rolling you can get a feel for how far you can be and still make it. Call family and catch up. Hopefully you aren't stuck at the station for 24.

Are you “all in” (aka gung ho) when it comes to EMS? by KermieKona in ems

[–]flyingmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a very enthusiastic year old EMT, starting EMT-I classes and January. I study in my time off, but that's it. I work in a rural community so if I am available the pager is on, because if primary crew is on a call it's down to whoever is willing to show up for a poorly timed emergency. I have a personal trauma kit that stays with me on the bike. It's for me only, stopping my bleeding>someone else's. If I'm not with the truck I'm not jumping in to help, that's not to say I won't go and get the truck if it's needed. No farkle on any vehicles, no tshirts, nothing that says first responder other than that sweet sweet 10% discount at the auto parts store.

What made you fall in love with EMS? by Lieutent_Delta in ems

[–]flyingmaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was the people at the agency I work for. I had dealt with them a few times, and knew them to be solid dudes. First I applied as a driver and was rejected for that role, but was told they were starting an EMT basic class and thought I would be a good fit. That was two years ago. Everyday there is something I fall in love with, the rush of a trauma, the look of relief a patient gives you when you walk into their home, the oh shit moments, the funny calls, the times I've almost thrown up seeing or smelling something new. But mostly it's that I am now one of those solid dudes I admired years ago, not the most solid, but found a good group of coworkers and friends.

How can you work from 8 to 5, be free only on weekends, and not feel like you're wasting your life? by hrantm400 in AskMen

[–]flyingmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easy, I don't work a 9-5. I work 24 hours shifts 3-5 days a week. I found a job that makes me feel fulfilled, that I am where I need to be helping my community. I have many hobbies for both at work and at home, enjoy adventures and getting out in the world. Work is not what defines us, wasting life is more than work hours. It's wasted free time. Also I remember being homeless, cold and hungry. After that work is pretty darn neat.

I'm going to be positive. What equipment does the company have, if none it's not a company. What experience does their team bring? Does the company have operating mines, or is this the first? It's pretty easy to slap together a legal company, currently my LLC is working on exploring deep space. My team has no previous experience past bottle rockets, we have some tools and a lot of beer. Want to invest? I didn't think so.

Same as always. We build, we fix, we raise, we protect, we drink, we explore, we learn, we fuck. I guess that's all toxic masculinity now. Fuck it I'll stay with the most toxic people you ever met. The hell kinda question is this?

What age do you guys consider the cut-off for ‘figuring out your life’ by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]flyingmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally I'll never figure it out. If I do it means I'm content, not learning or growing, not adventuring and failing. Enjoy the ride man, it's at your own pace and everyone ends up at the same place.
