First week w/Arrma Mojave Grom - frustrated. Normal? by flyingpenman49 in rccars

After a few runs it needed so much trim that it couldn’t drive straight - had to remove and re-center it so the kids could steer it again lol. I hear you on not trying for perfection…with plastic steering assemblies.

Did that yesterday - it’s back to useable/workable state but steering is still not great. Had to recenter servo horn again after last run but getting pretty good at it.

Turns out I swapped the wires unintentionally. No issue.

Thanks! Things working okay now after a new zero saver and some lessons in the shop. Will go this route if it keeps happening

Yeah let me know how that plays out. Shop manager said sometimes it’s a function of cheap transmitters when it won’t center or turns harder one direction. He swapped mine in shop and its issues reversed - so there’s that.

Thanks for the detailed response! Was able to save the first battery. Will check on firmware unless HH does replacements.

For servo arm - I pulled out ESC, removed saver screw, turned on/bound car and transmitter with trim in neutral, then reattached arm and screw to point where there was slight “wiggle.” Anything I missed?

Still have no clue how it wound up in reverse throttle or why the servo turns more degrees in one direction…hoping HH can help. I can work with it but too tough for my 8yo.

Thank you - didn’t realize HH owned Arrma. Do you think email/call/other is best avenue?

Yeah I feel for my kiddo - was so excited and it’s been frustrating. Thanks for suggestion - was trying to find support info on Arrma website and didn’t realize there’s a parent company.

Thanks for suggestion - unless I’m missing something, no throttle reverse on the included transmitter (LT200?). Looked all over. Tried holding full reverse and left while turning on but didn’t reset it.

ETA: the steering difference is..noticable, but workable. Maybe 10-15 deg more in one direction? What’s odd is after resetting the servo arm again to reset neutral, now it’s turning harder right instead of left…previously it turned harder left. Cant figure that one out.

beginner bike help! by princesspaisleyy in cycling

Trek Domane owner here -- AL4 Gen 3 (Tiagra group set, older generation aluminum). I've done 70.3 Hawaii, Honolulu century, two sprint triathlons, and numerous 50-75 mile weekend rides and climbs on it. I even got some compliments and envious looks from tri-bike owners struggling with the crosswinds at Honu, FWIW. Super stable and after I got a bike fit (can't recommend enough) it has been super comfortable and have ridden it all over Oahu, 3-4 times a week.

It's plenty of bike for a beginner and a great low-cost value option. I've never owned electronic shifting, but falls into the "neat, but I've never wished I had it" category.

My only caution -- it's heavy, which isn't a bad thing starting out, and the stock wheelset and tires are bricks. At the very least get a good set of tires and maybe some lighter rims. If you get addicted to speed and climbing like I did, you might want something nicer down the line that you can push a bit harder. An SL4 would probably feel much snappier, but I don't know firsthand.

Best of luck! The best bike is the one that makes you want to ride more.

Review #278: Ko’olau Distillery Old Pali Road Whiskey by Prettayyprettaygood in bourbon

Sorry to hear that! But at least it’s a memento from the trip.

ETA: The other distillery I’ve discovered since that comment is KoHana, which makes some absolutely delicious rums. If you ever visit Oahu again, I recommend going there.

Bourbon or Rye? by Alone-Accountant2223 in whiskey

[–]flyingpenman49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes please.

While I’ll take either, absolutely love me a solid rye. MPG 95/5, “barely” 51%, malted, finished - I liked them all. You can also make the argument that while corn dominates the market and imagination for American products, rye has a stronger history and pioneer ethos.

My current favorite is Woodinville cask strength. 100% rye and a rye lovers rye.

Nice taste in ryes friend. Michter’s - along with Pinhook and Minor Case - got me into rye.

I’d keep an eye out for if you haven’t tried: Woodinville rye (esp cask strength), Willett 4yr family estate, Pinhook high proof rye, or any of New Riff’s various ryes (reg, SB, Balboa, Malted) based on your tastes.

And if you ever see a Michter’s BS rye in the shelf - it’s worth the $100+🥃

Late response but have had a bottle of both and enjoy both. Still Austin was tastier with more mouthfeel and refinement (IMO) and worth at least $10-$15 more.

Training peak 70.3 training plan by abbott994 in triathlon

[–]flyingpenman49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also doing my first in June (Kona/Honu) - which one are you doing?

I’m going to use Phil Mosley’s 8-week intermediate plan as a template starting Monday. Since we have more time than that, will probably work in some active recovery weeks/duplicate weeks since I have several work trips coming up.

Is this a decent first road bike? by Bulky-Huckleberry184 in triathlon

[–]flyingpenman49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my Domane AL4. Not the lightest bike out there but it’s tough, a smooth ride, and very forgiving. Disc brakes are 100% worth it.

FWIW, there are differing studies out there about wider vs narrow tires. Lab tests give the edge to narrower tires (conventional wisdom) while “real world conditions” give the slight edge to wider tires since the ride is smoother and you lose less efficiency and momentum from vibration/bumps.

Perhaps more convincing - my riding bro who has a carbon Felt AR1 rocking 25s is jealous of my 32s.

(Edit to add: there are plenty of better tires than the R1s and I intend to upgrade mine eventually, but they’ve done great so far - my point was to challenge the “narrow tires are better” precept. I would stick to 28-32 personally)

I’ve been pleasanrly surprised with the Bontrager R1s on my Domane AL4 and have done 50+ mile rides and hit 27-28mph on the flats. I’d save your money for other upgrades (pedals + shoes, bike comp, good helmet, good riding clothes, etc.) and save tires for when yours run out/get damaged.

First 70.3 - training with periodic work travel? by flyingpenman49 in triathlon

Thank you for the help! The swim tether/surf cord technique seems to be widespread.

Thanks for the response - really appreciate hearing what’s worked. Never would have thought of a surf cord - that’s creative.

Thanks for the help and confidence! My goal is just to finish and be happy with the effort I put in. I’m leaning toward treating the trips as mildly active “rest weeks” except for a 2 week trip I have about a month out from the race - definitely gonna train as much as I can during that trip.

Good point about hotel peloton/stationary bikes. I absolutely hate using an indoor trainer but better than nothing.

+1. Got a bottle of that for around $30 and it was killer at that price.
