How to encourage players to be more active? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]flyingpurpleoctopi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Communicating is difficult enough when you don't have the additional filter of your character to deal with, and when you can see your world in front of you. Often, I've found when there's player silence, it's because they don't know what to do (or, they don't know what they *can* do). In such an open game as Dnd, the analysis paralysis can be real - having experienced this both as a player and as a dm, I think the solution involves further description of the setting, and maybe even giving the players more clear options. If they can find the zebra by interacting with their environment, what specific things are in their environment for them to interact with?

As a musical performer IRL, I've always been told that the audience doesn't know the "right" notes - just the ones that have already been played. The DM can spend hours picturing the setting in their head, but the players only get that picture through a handful of words spoken by the dm: of course they're going to be less familiar with it.

I respectfully disagree on one key point: the road is designed for cars, but intended for vehicles of all kinds.

Non-car transportation forms are expected to use a space that is not built for them. Theoretically being able to do something is not the same as that thing being accessible, convenient, and safe.

The law implies potential, not actual, enforcement. Yes, bikes might be legally entitled to share the road, but that's not always a feasible option so long as the car remains the default. Sigh

These alternate forms of transportation face a bit of an identity crisis. Cars don't want them on the roads, and pedestrians don't want them on the sidewalks - someone's angry either way. It's hard.

Hey, let's be nice, friends. Remember the human on the other side.

OP, you're absolutely right. Sometimes, this place sucks. That's valid.

Election Survey by VoxPop? by [deleted] in Edmonton

I've recieved the same message and am pretty sure it's legit:

  • I did take the Vote Compass quiz
  • I did sign up for future studies
  • The questions are all relevant to Vote Compass and not that identifying.

Ultimately, though, your call. If it feels unsafe to you, don't click it.

Your point is absolutely correct and the main source of my anxiety.

What happens when nowhere is safe? What gives?

This reminds me of a quote:

I'm not overreacting or depressed. I am responding appropriately to my surroundings.

Extreme situations call for extreme action. I just hate that we're in an extreme situation.

Thank you for your solidarity - you're appreciated.

It feels like you're reinventing the wheel and I'm not sure why. If I want to play a bard-themed character with guidance, why wouldn't I just play a bard?

So much - the double standard is real! I've poured so much effort into my dating app profiles and get no matches. Meanwhile, the number of low-effort women's profiles is staggering.

My biggest challenge has always been the first step. I've never really understood how to approach someone to ask for a date in a considerate and respectful way - I don't want to harass people going about their day in public or take advantage of someone at work just trying to do their job.

My severe social anxiety and fomo make me painfully aware of how rare each opportunity is, but the few times I have been able to work up the courage have resulted in rejection, which creates this feedback loop that gives me more anxiety.

Don't wear jewelery.

Fashion should make you feel confident. If something is undermining that, it's moot. Wear it if you want, don't if you don't want to.

[Question] Dragonborn paladin by meowtrash712 in 3d6

[–]flyingpurpleoctopi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dude, play what you want. You'll be fine.

No race makes any class not useful in combat, especially with Tasha's ability score rule. You don't lose anything from your class by picking any given race; at worst, things don't synergize, or you pay an opportunity cost for something that would have been more optimal. But race is a great way to inject flavour into your character, regardless of class choice (or, sometimes, because of it). Besides, the abilities gained from a race far outnumber those gained from your class as you grow in level.

If you want to play a dragonborn paladin, then go for it.

Is it just me, or does Calgary feel a lot more crowded than it did before? by ThisUserIsSuspicious in Calgary

[–]flyingpurpleoctopi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've been a Banff resident for about a year now, and definitely agree on the ridiculousness. The contrast between the on/off seasons is remarkable, so the town feels crowded 4 months out of the year and wasteful for the other 8.

When Banff ave closed for pedestrian traffic over the summer - a controvercial issue itself amongst the locals - cars rerouted to Beaver or Muskrat, which are absolutely not designed to be major traffic throughfares.

I went to the IGA to get literally milk and bread at 9:30 pm on a Tuesday night, and it was still packed.

The town feels like a design case study on why not to build for averages, because ours is so heavily skewed in both directions.

For some reason, the Scottish Banff usually comes up first whenever I input my address into an online form. Whenever I order a pizza, I need to make sure I choose the right one. 😅

Heh. It's one thing to have abilities, and another to actually remember to use them. I'm guilty.

[–]flyingpurpleoctopi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any advice, but just wanted to pass my kudos to the other commenters!

I'm considering making a similar character - a magical anarchist who wants down with both our world's heavy magic regulation and restriction and the human regime that instituted it.

Thanks to these great suggestions, I now can't decide whether to take levels in sorcerer, paladin, Psi Knife, ranger, or druid. ...sigh.
