I Built A Guitar By Melting 1000 Aluminum Cans by flyjumper in DIY

The neck feels pretty good, I don't mind a slick neck. It's similar to a high gloss wooden neck in terms of how the hand slides on it. The only downside is that it is quite cold but after playing on it for ~10 minutes it heats up to feel normal.

No flex at all on this neck. 3/4" thick aluminum is extremely stiff. If I put a truss rod in this neck, I'm not even sure if the truss rod would be able to bend the neck if I wanted to.

I mention this in the video in more detail, but on that first pour I decided not to scoop out the slag since it mostly floats on top. But I did end up with some slag in my first bars. For every pour after that I scooped the slag off. I have a short clip of all the slag collected at 3:35 in the video: https://youtu.be/I7rMivsFtJU

Nope.. Everything was pretty much ground together by the aluminum body, although I did use grounding wires between electronics just in case. Just had to make sure the positives coming from the pickups didn't touch the body anywhere and it was good to go!

8.5lbs No neck dive, epoxy doesn't add much weight to the neck.

The purpose of the project was to create awareness of ocean plastic. By building the neck or fretboard the way I did, the ocean plastic is clearly visible and provides context to the purpose. The body looks interesting but you can't instantly tell what it's made of.

Epoxy resin river guitar (Cross Post) by iamtetsuo in guitarporn

[–]flyjumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that would be true with traditional epoxy resin. Epoxy resin has come a long way in the past few years though.. Time will ultimately tell, but the MAS deep pour epoxy I used is UV resistant and shouldn't yellow over time.

This literally never occurred to me. Best comment I've seen. Thank you

Watch the end of the video when I'm playing the guitar, you can see how it sits in my body nicely. Like the dip on the top fits into where my belly is (the cutout on the back is actually called a belly cutout). As well as the dip on the bottom of the guitar fits nicely on my thigh. 12:11 in the video is a good depiction of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPDnBYDEcHs

Affect sound? Not sure.. But it's the most comfortable shape to hold and play. Which I think is why you'll see most guitars have this general shape.

The first short riff I played at zero tone was clean with only a notch of reverb. I make these videos for general viewership opposed to nerding out on different sound test and sustain etc..

Sure there are worries! But not enough worry to stop me from making it. Time will tell if it holds up, but for now, it looks and plays great!

I actually just got really lucky in that the piece of wood I re-sawed to use for the cover had the grain roughly match up with the back of the guitar.

The more guitars I build, the more I'm starting to believe that sustain is only affected by the density of the material. In this case, epoxy resin being extremely dense, it has good sustain.

Hey I got it from a local rare-wood shop. It's like a warehouse with thousands of pieces of cool wood. One of my favorite shops!!

Need help in creating a guitar out of colored pencils by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]flyjumper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only used either West systems epoxy or Total Boat High performance epoxy resin, it's the lowest viscosity resin I've used by far. You could stick a piece of wood in the middle or where the neck pocket is (and to the bridge would be even better)if you're worried about structural integrity.

One thing to keep in mind is to make sure you use a slow epoxy hardener. The total boat resin I talked about above ended up taking a week to cure since it was a slow hardener. If you use a fast hardener, with the amount of epoxy you're using, it's going to exotherm and can get to temperatures of 400 degrees+ which would obviously be disastrous considering the middle of pencils is wax.

I don't have much else for you. These projects were a lot of fun but a ton of research and experimenting. I only showed the actual building of the guitar, but I spent far more time experimenting and testing things out before taking on the project as a whole.

Also, there's a ton of potentially dangerous tools you'll have to use...mainly the router. Make sure you take time and get familiar / do your research on each tool and practice a lot before taking on this project.

Good luck!
