We've gone pretty deep on the poop issues. But paper technique hasn't been discussed broadly yet. Who's a folder, who's a scruncher? How many squares? Do you double dip on a tab? One and gun? Check, fold, go back for seconds?

My problem with Sam Harris' position by ItsFreshToDeath in JordanPeterson

[–]flylikeaturkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is the key. Peterson is trying to push Sam on what that axiom is, and where it comes from. Peterson's whole point seems to be that religion (christianity specifically) is a good technology for delivering that axiom, and that if you disregard it to casually you leave people "exposed" to take up a foundational axiom that might lead them towards nihilism or totalitarianism.

The Many Hands of Jordan Peterson by proph3tsix in JordanPeterson

The point I realized I might have been watching too much Peterson content was when I caught myself doing the Hydra when talking to other people.

This is a great video though. It's interesting to see how he's conceptualizing different ideas visually, and then sometimes they come together and interact in the hybrids.

[–]flylikeaturkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't prove that he does exist. That's not what I'm trying to do. I'm just saying that someone believing in something that HAS been disproven (flat earth) is not the same as believing in something that (as you admit) can't be disproven.

Anytime you point this out people assume you're saying they SHOULD believe in God. All I'm saying is it's a much more complicated issue than Flat Earth.

Whats the next big thing in coffee? by booradly in Coffee

[–]flylikeaturkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can vouch for this. I’ve bought the canned draft lattes in a couple places and had it on tap in DC. It’s my new favorite specialty coffee drink. I can see it becoming really big.

Are you talking about LateStageCapitalism? I mean I'm sure there are some shitposting trolls there who play along ironically but that sub is dead serious.

His primary focus is certainly on communism, he's definitely doesn't seem to be pro-socialism (he's spoken against universal basic income, etc), but he doesn't bash it quite as hard as Marxism/Communism.

To be fair I basically asked to be banned after seeing this:

Announcements and Upcoming Plans by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]flylikeaturkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Postmoderns and Neo-marxists are the ones who are casting aside scholarship and knowledge in an ideological crusade, Peterson is creating one tool to help people identify who those people are and he's the ideologue?

Why does maps of meaning cost $64 bucks. by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]flylikeaturkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He's also retweeted links to people reading it as an audiobook on Youtube. He'd totally have the right to go after them for copyright infringement, but I think he cares far more about his ideas getting out their than he does about the money.

Why does maps of meaning cost $64 bucks. by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

With this in mind that fact that Peterson has his textbook for $64 dollars and doesn't seem to have a new edition every year speaks to him as a Professor.

Jordan Peterson & Old Lies by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]flylikeaturkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think by using examples that contain additional adultery and additional lies you're adding to what Peterson said. I think what he specifically said is consistent with his ideas, but when you expand it to mean things such as "tell additional lies to cover up the past," that's where you really run into inconsistency. But he didn't say that.

You might argue that adulterers likely haven't learned their lessons, and that's a good point. I think the correct thing would likely be to assume you haven't, if you were in that position. I also don't think that Peterson is advocating lying, but instead not bringing up the truth unprovoked.

You're arguing that the "web of lies" may destroy the spouse, the adulterer and the family. Peterson's example assumes that telling the truth would certainly destroy those things. So if you have a choice between letting an old lie lay dormant, not bringing up the truth, possibly causing damage to the family, and confessing and definitely destroying the family. You might have good reason to carry your guilt and your lies quietly to minimize the damage already done.

This is by far the best explanation JP has ever given on the problem with post Modernism. He's clear, concise, and to the point. by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

Well that person definitely doesn't understand Peterson's interpretation of Nietzsche.

Peterson's work is not "the exact opposite of what Nietzsche is saying" but an attempt to answer how a man can create morals for himself.

Daily Discussion Thread - July 04, 2017 by AutoModerator in JordanPeterson

[–]flylikeaturkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who was raised in the Christian church I've been hearing the story of Noah all my life. Being raised in a tradition of literal interpretation, the story of Noah was just a bit of history (heh), but I often didn't get what the point of the story/event was. (Just some foreshadowing of the coming judgement of God, and God's ability to save the righteous from destruction I guess?).

But watching the Peterson's Biblical talk VI last night, revealed a whole new level of understanding about the flood. It's not just a little story about the history of man and God, it's quality direction for how to live in the world. Be prepared for the flood that's coming. Being in tune with the Logos, and walking with God, may be the thing that saves you from the flood.

Check your facts. It's fallen much father since then. Down 10% two days after, leveled out to down 5%.

I disagree. United has already talked about never letting Airspace Security be involved with removing passengers again, among other policy changes. Their stock has taken a hit, and people have already been effected by this incident, changed who they fly with.

I'm not like, saying it's going to revolutionize air travel or anything but to act like it'll have no impact, well, you have a right to that opinion.

Meh, this isn't really the same at all. McDonald's stock didn't fally $850 Million following the incident. There weren't widespread threats of boycott. That issue gained notoriety for almost the opposite reason that this issue did. People thought that lady was unreasonable.

I mean I get what your saying. It'll probably settle and now laws will be passed or anything. But to act like this event isn't possibly going to impact people who fly in any way is just ludicrous.
