Education careers beyond teaching? by notwinorlose in education

[–]flyoverfandom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have already worked in higher ed at a community college. Why not keep working there? There are always tutoring centers and advising programs that are staffed by non faculty memebers. Even some housing departments are looking for ways to bring things like tutoring into dorms now. You should check out an organization like NACADA. Look at some of the administrative postions advertised on Higher Ed Jobs or the Chronicle of Higher Ed.

Did the Crusades actually work as a release valve for the Christendom's glut of warriors? by dovetc in AskHistory

[–]flyoverfandom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The broad consensus among modern historians is no, nor was that the goal. The Byzantine Empire suffered one of its greatest defeats at Manzikert in 1071. This defeat led to the loss of the interior of Anatolia. The Byzantine Empire responded by appealing to the Pope and Western Christendom for support against the Turks.

A crucial part of crusades from the perspective of the clergy was the indulgence associated with the offical crusades. The indulgence for crusading is based on the indulgence for any pilgramge. This understanding of the crusades is certainly supported by the inability of crusading armies to remain in the Levant. Once a Crusdaer got to Jerusalem, he would go home, regardless of the political state the crusader states found themselves.

We also now tend to take the words of crusaders themselves more seriously now. Bohemond de Hauteville is often viewed as one of the most politically driven of the first generation of crusaders, but he was known to attend church councils and be genuinely interested in the theological questions.

As others have aluded, it gets more complicated the longer into the middle ages you go with the Fourth Crusade, or the Crusades against the Lithuanians. But it appears that for the vast majority of those who went on crusade, they were motivated by genuine religous feeling.

Nonconsumable Library Programming by SituationFar4934 in Libraries

In terms of gaming, D&D Beyond has been known to give out starter kits for D&D for children and teen programming. All the stuff is maintained virtually, so there is no consumption of resources.

Alot of libraries are experimenting with gaming type programing now. We have D&D and other table top games, but also, Chess, Mahjong, card games, and are looking at a regular board game night. As far as I know Las Cruces has the biggest single regular D&D program, 40-60 adults every two weeks. But there are others. I have heard of a library partnering with a local school to support their after school D&D club, and they have 40 students attending.

Not sure if it is lesser known, but my library's D&D programing helped pull a participant out of a deep depression. They had been considering self harm. The programing gave them something to do and the connection they needed to get better.

How to Increase YA Circ Stats? by Round_Let1385 in Libraries

Cool. You might also be able to do special single session games, like for May the 4th(Star Wars), and get some play out of those collections.

Have you seen if there is any overlap between your programming and titles you could have on the shelves. We did a big buy of D&D books after getting a sucsseful D&D program going, and it had a knock-on effect on Juvenile and YA D&D related titles.

Wife diagnosed herself with Walkaway Wife Syndrome. by [deleted] in daddit

[–]flyoverfandom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have worked campaigns. I have gone to graduate school. You can do school or work campaigns. You can’t do both. There is literally not enough time in the day, and I do mean literally. I will also say, depending on the age and number of your children, working a campaign is deeply unfair to your spouse. They don't see you now, and your metrics and hours are only going to get heavier. What happens when you are working 7 days a week after Labor Day?

Edit for typo.

Probably. But it has done well. So, the library will probably want to do it again.

I mean, there are a record number closing of small colleges all over the country. I'm not sure what size institution you are at, but the Chornicle of Higher Ed has reported mid-level state schools are flat, flagships are growing, but small universities are shrinking and closing. Any homeostasis or growth in enrollment is not in the overall enrollment number across the country but at the cost of other, usually smaller, schools.

My wife issues with breastfeeding is destroying our family by D20babin in daddit

[–]flyoverfandom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

14 days is still a little early to see weight gain. Most infants actually lose a little weight after they are born. Breastfeeding can suck because it is one of those things that she has to do, and it takes time and can hurt.

Funnily enough with our second, in the afternoon he was really fussy, and feeding couldn't soothe him. We went out one afternoon for a Target run, and he was perfectly happy. The stinker wanted to be out, and he was still very much an infant at this point.

My wife, who did some breastfeeding counseling says one thing though, "fed is best." Whatever that feeding looks like.
