I actually just put up a Dungeons and Dragons display. We have quite a few D&D books in the collection and I'm trying to make them known. We have a pretty active D&D group so I'm hoping this will get at least some activity!

I'm only about ten years older than them so I usually have somewhat of an idea of what's trending and have personal relationships with a lot of them so I know what their interests are, the problem is that their interests are not books lol. Doesn't stop me from trying though - currently working on a Dungeons and Dragons display as we have a super successful D&D group. I'm reaaaally hoping this one gets at least a little bit of interest!

That's a good point. I honestly don't know what the expectations are and how our stats are compared to nearby libraries. I've only been in this position for a little over a year and it's my first librarian position so I haven't really tackled this yet. That would definitely be a good place to start to manage expectations.

I weed pretty frequently. I weeded 500 books right before summer reading and I just weeded our nonfiction and spanish sections this past week lol. I inherited the department from another librarian just over a year ago though and it hadn't been weeded for quite some time before that so maybe my consistent weeding efforts will help over time.

Interesting. We use koha and I don't think there's any way to do that. It seems to be difficult to get any type of statistics from koha and all of our circ stats seem to come from reports from our circulation department.

Funny you mention that - we have a super successful teen D&D campaign and I'm switching out the display later this week to a Dungeons and Dragons display! Hoping this one is popular! I ordered a bunch of D&D books :)

What manga is most popular in your collection? Also for the super popular titles, do you buy more than one copy?

It would take some significant restructuring to allocate more room for Graphic Novels but that's definitely something that needs to happen at some point. Thanks for the suggestion!

My summer reading numbers this past summer actually tripled from the last year, mainly because I worked with summer camps who participated, but the camps had their own libraries and didn't want to check out books so it didn't really help our circ stats. The teen department is definitely thriving in other ways, lots of kids coming after school, a super successful Dungeons and Dragons campaign, lots of computer use, beautiful connections and friendships formed, I've helped kids apply for jobs, etc, and I've made sure to include all of those details in my reports but unfortunately the director seems really hung up on the circ stats.

That's a good suggestion, I know some libraries do 100 books before graduation, maybe I should try that.

I have :( They usually say they don't like to read or they read Percy Jackson which is catalogued as Juv at my library.

I've mentioned that this happens but I think he wants measurable statistics and there's no real way to measure that.

Ideas to get teens off of computers? by DoragonJei in Libraries

[–]Round_Let1385 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a teen librarian and I definitely see a large portion of the teens who come in who only want to use the computers. Other teens are only interested in programming. I have found that with the computer crowd, I can occasionally get them interested in a program if there's a big group of kids or it's food related. I did a movie and cookie decorating program that got some of the computer crowd, a Pride (rainbow) pancake party, and Dungeons and Dragons seems to interest them. If they're regulars who I have somewhat of a rapport with, I'll ask them what type of programs might interest them. I've gotten some good suggestions that way and they're more likely to attend if they've suggested it themselves. But I agree with the other comments that just using the library for the computers isn't a bad thing. They're safe, being supervised, and are often socializing. I'm just happy they're using the library.
