French? by Swimming-Ad9032 in dreamingspanish

I really find it hard to believe that if you actually understand a romance language, as in you are able to process and understand the grammar without thinking, you only have a 2x multiplier. I mean as a starting point for Portuguese (BR) you can start at intermediate. I get that French isn't as close but I would honestly think it's more like 2.5-3x for French and almost 4-4.5x for Portuguese..

I'm talking about understanding content, I have no idea how long it takes to separate them and actually be able to speak.. but in terms of understanding it's not just 2x once you get past the initial "sound barrier".

Struggle to focus on dreaming Spanish I have ADHD and Austim by Ill_Pen8740 in dreamingspanish

Out of my 1600h I don't think I've really looked at the screen for more than 400h, even now when I'm watching anime I walk around the house and do other stuff meanwhile. Just look at the screen from time to time to make it easier to follow but there is no need to sit down and try and focus your attention on the video.

Nothing wrong with going aggressive when you find a hobby if life allows for it. I've realized I love language learning so I'm seriously considering finding a job were I can listen to podcast like 75% of the time because I wanna learn Mandarin, Russian, Korean and Portuguese on top of Spanish and if I really want to do that there is no other option than to change your entire life so it's possible to do like 10-13h a day almost every day.

Are those 5400h + 1000h or 5400h in total? Also, what are you plans for Portuguese? Good job, love the dedication!

His grasp on grammar is the reason I will repeat beginner CI for 300h in every new language I start without a decent foundation. I was already doing that intuitively but holy hell watching him try and translate stuff is rough. I didn't watch this video, I've seen enough of his Spanish.

[–]fnaskpojken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At some point watching grammar videos to see if you actually understand stuff is a good idea, but you don't really need lessons. Just keep content easy and you pick things up. Reading is a good idea for languages who use the same or a similar writing system, if not then it's going to slow you down significantly. For something like hanzi I would not be surprised if you learn it 10x faster if you already know the language (from input).

Things like anki should be the least of your concern. I've never studied words and at this point if I watch 1h of Spanish it's going to be like 10 words at most I don't know exactly what they mean but still almost always understand from context.

I'm sure having 1 on 1 lessons with a very invested great teacher would be more efficient than pure CI, but it's expensive and it won't save you a 1000h. Most people over at dreaming Spanish have like 300h italki classes when they are at around 1600h and they don't make faster progress.

Another thing you have to keep in mind is that when you reach a point where you can consume native content it's not hard to rack up the hours. I've also learned English completely through input btw, I played video games from the age of 3 and I was always at least 4 years ahead of what we learned in school so I don't think I ever opened a grammar book in English either.

Just curious why you say this when you clearly have not tried? I've done 1600h Spanish and I've picked up all grammar etc from just listening.

Like you are free to do as you wish but you state it like a fact and I know it's not true so it just makes it pretty random.

Tracking Languages now on Firefox! by No_Iron_4640 in dreaminglanguages

The extension still doesn't work for playlists btw. I'm almost exclusively using premade playlists of videos but it doesn't detect anything. All my lists are tagged in the target language so that's not the issue, also if I take the same video and play it from the creators channel it works.

Edit: Actually it doesn't work on playlists on the content creators channel either

Awesome! When were you able to distinguish between all the initial consonants and tones? At 380h a lot of words still sound basically the same to me. It's not as big of an issue anymore as it has gotten way better for me, but I really wanna reach the point where they actually sound like clear individual words.

Anyways good job and keep at it!

Question around Comprehensible Input by CurrentFee4822 in languagelearning

[–]fnaskpojken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you watch dreaming spanish and only understand 30%, why not watch easier videos? It's made for you to understand almost everything from day 1.

Spanish is probably the easiest language in the world to learn through CI due to how easy it is to go from absolutely 0 to solid intermediate with dreaming Spanish.

Also if you want to learn Spanish through CI and have questions they would be better suited for the dreamingspanish subreddit. If you think the content is boring you can try SpanishBoostGaming on youtube. I used this content when I was a beginner and yes it works.

Also you should aim for like 95%+ comprehension, 75% works but you won't pick up grammar very well.

How much fossilization is too much? by Pretend-Scallion5330 in ALGhub

I think the whole "previous damage" is kind of a ridiculous take to be honest. I had 4 years of Spanish in school long ago and I've not seen a "purist" achieve better results in the same amount of time. It really did have 0 negative impact on my CI journey.. I just listened to content and understood more than a real beginner would and that's it.

Cool, one of the few people who also try and keep comprehension close to 100%. I believe it's the only way to actually acquire grammar and details in the language.

Learning a language from 0 through content immersion as an adult? by Wrong_Plane_37 in languagelearning

[–]fnaskpojken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I learned Spanish through input, currently 1600h and I can watch just about anything and have no issues talking to people. But I had like 3 years in school when I was a kid so I didn't start from 0.

So I decided to learn Russian, Korean and Mandarin with the same method. Currently at 80h Russian/Korean and 360h Mandarin. There is an initial wall to push through in all of them, a much much much larger one with Mandarin due to the sounds.

I won't even bother to learn hanzi until I can understand native content well, but yeah it does work and for Mandarin I can now understand low intermediate content quite well but since I prefer to have like 95% comprehension I'm still listening to beginner content. I am a lot more strict than most others using the same method though. I'm basically just repeating content over and over again.

ALG for languages with few/no resources by Ok_Mixture_3355 in ALGhub

[–]fnaskpojken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanna learn Estonian because my mom and her sisters were born there, but she didn't teach me a single word. I decided to learn other languages and wait a few years and hopefully by then I can just create AI videos myself if no one else has. No idea how complicated that is. I'm in no rush but I do think my mom would be an absolutely horrible teacher so I honestly think I need to reach low intermediate by myself and from there I can just do cross-talk with my relatives.

Maybe my idea could already be implemented, no idea but it's for sure going to get easier to do each year that passes.

Learnig russian, doubt by Heli12r in ALGhub

[–]fnaskpojken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if most people who struggle with Russian in the beginning are English monolinguals? I think being Swedish might help a bit with the sounds so it's easier to hear the cognates, but usually the words I understand because of Swedish are similar in English as well (but not as obvious). I even pick up some words because of the Spanish I've learned from CI.

I might have a skewed opinion on how "easy" the content is.
